HSE Instructor F/T (Thailand)

Position: Social Studies and Science Teacher
Program: Minmahaw Higher Education Program (MHEP)
Reports to: MHEP School Manager & Academic Coordinator
Organization: Education for Friendship Foundation (EFF)
Location: Mae Sot, Tak, 63110, Thailand
Position Dates: June 1st , 2016 – May 31st, 2017
Type: Full-time - 1 year contract
 
Organization: Minmahaw Higher Education Program (MHEP) is a non-profit, education organization. It operates in Mae Sot, on the Thai-Burma border, to educate young people from Burma with disadvantaged backgrounds. By providing an education which incorporates critical thinking and organizational skills, MHEP prepares students to take a high school equivalency exam so they can attain scholarships and gain entry to university. Although this is the direct aim of the program, the fundamental purpose is to promote higher education and support the new generation to play an active role in shaping their communities inside and outside Burma.
 
Position: MHEP offers a 12-month residential program for students with diverse educational backgrounds from various Burmese ethnic groups. The students will be chosen from refugee camps, migrant areas, and inside Burma. The syllabus covers English language and literature, academic reading and writing, mathematics, science (including chemistry, physics, biology), and social studies. All teaching is in English. Upon completing the course all students need to be able to pass the US GED (General Educational Development) exam, a high school equivalency test.
 
Responsibilities: Four hours of class (two for Social Studies and two for Science) per day, five days per week
 
Social Studies subjects include:
  • World History (15%)
  • American History (25%)
  • Politics (25%)
  • Economics (20%)
  • Geography (15%)
There will be a focus on reading skills and critical thinking skills, with emphasis on use of various sources and social studies tools, such as tables, graphs, political cartoons, maps, and photographs.
Science topics include:
  • Chemistry (25%)
  • Physics (25%)
  • Biology (30%)
  • Earth Science (10%)
  • Space Science (10%)
  • Emphasis on problem solving skills including reading, critical thinking and the use of scientific concepts in real world situations
  • Introduce the scientific method and the use of experimentation in science
  • Demonstrate practically how science is instrumental in the world around us and how to apply the curriculum to everyday life
  • Construct and facilitate student and teacher- led labs in all disciples of science
 
As the Social Studies and Science teacher, responsibilities extend beyond the topics taught to include the following:
  • Contribute to the development and implementation of the Social Studies and Science curricula
  • Conduct classes, workshops, and demonstrations to teach principles and techniques in Social Studies and Science
  • Relate curricula to current events to encourage critical thinking and analysis
  • Establish clear objectives for all weekly lesson plans, units, and projects for Social Studies and Science
  • Maintain accurate and complete records of student progress.
  • Coordinate with the other teachers to promote integration of program and delivery.
  • Prepare and maintain educational materials and equipment
  • Assist program coordinator with enforcing behavior and procedures for maintaining order among the students
  • Plan and conduct activities for a balance program of instruction, demonstration, and work time that provides students with opportunities to observe, question, and investigate
  • Observe and evaluate student's work to determine progress and make suggestions for improvement
  • Being able to incorporate technology within the classroom.
  • Provide coverage for other teachers as needed
  • Involvement in all MHEP staff meetings
  • Night study duty (which involves helping students during their study time) at MHEP at least once a week
  • Participate in extra-curricular activities outside the school and outside regular hours, as determined by the coordinator
  • Participation in the recruitment of students and staff for the 2015 - 2016 academic year along the Thai/ Burma boarder
 
The ideal candidate will have:
  • A relevant university degree or two years work experience in the same area
  • At least two years previous experience of teaching students English as a second language/English as a foreign language and/or teaching high school students preferred
  • Strong teamwork and communication skills
  • Ability to adapt to various situations and experiences in limited-resource, challenging environments
  • Experience with curriculum building
  • Experience, exposure to the Burmese refugee and migrant situation helpful
  • Outgoing personality with interest in understanding other cultures
  • Ability to work within a team as well as independently
  • A CELTA/TEFL/TESOL certificate from a recognized institution preferred

HSE Prep classes will offer low-level job seekers opportunities to work towards earning their High School Equivalency. The HSE instructor will lead classes, instruct students in all subjects included on the TASC, develop curriculum and materials, design lessons, maintain a successful learning environment, collaborate with program staff and maintain program data/complete data entry as required by program and funding sources. 
Qualifications:
  • Bachelor’s degree required; Master’s degree in Education (MEd) preferred
  • One (1) year teaching experience required
  • Ability to engage a diverse population including disconnected youth and adult learners
  • Knowledge of Pre-HSE and HSE curriculum and HSE testing requirements 
  • Strong computer skills, including experience with Microsoft Office, Google Suite, and web-hosted databases
  • Commitment to incorporating innovative teaching methods
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills (including a great sense of humor)
  • Ability to assess differences in learning styles and capitalize on student strengths

We currently offer three different classes ranging from 4th grade to 12.9th grade. The Program Coordinator will both oversee the program as well as teach one class at the ABE level for days per week.  
Qualifications:
  • Bachelor’s degree required; Master’s degree in Education (MEd) preferred
  • Two (2) years teaching and supervisory experience required
  • Ability to engage a diverse population including disconnected youth, adult learners
  • Knowledge of ABE, Pre-HSE and HSE curriculum and HSE testing requirements 
  • Strong computer skills, including experience with Microsoft Office, Google Suite, and web-hosted databases. 
  • Commitment to incorporating innovative teaching methods

  • Oversee the implementation of Henry Street’s HSE program including outreach and recruitment, TABE testing, and instruction of an ABE level class (instruction will be approximately 50% of work time)
  • Provide support to another Pre-HSE/HSE level instructor
  • Ensure program is meeting funder outcomes and data collection requirements 
  • Maintain a classroom conducive to learning and facilitate successful participant engagement, quality interaction and learning
  • Establish clear expectations and encouraging student accountability
  • Implement quality instructional practices, and vary methods of instruction, to encourage participation and retention
  • Conduct regular assessment/post-tests to determine advancement
  • Maintain timely and complete documentation, including individual case notes as prescribed by Program Director

The YMCA of Greater New York reaches half a million New Yorkers through programs that focus on youth development, healthy living and social responsibility.  The YMCA of Greater New York seeks a dynamic professional to become the Y Roads Center’s Group Facilitator and work as part of a team at the Y Roads Literacy Center (YR-LC) in East New York, Brooklyn.  The Group Facilitator will organize, lead and instruct small groups of young adults on a variety of curriculum topics that will improve their leadership capacity, life skills, and academic outcomes.  The incumbent will lead / guide project-based learning, utilizing hands on service-learning projects and emphasizing connections to college and career readiness, promote life skills and leadership, and provide academic readiness support.
Responsibilities:
  • Plan and facilitate small group sessions with engaging and motivational openings.
  • Supervise student-centered, structured service-learning activities.
  • Generate interest in service-learning activities and interview potential participants.
  • Document activities and input data regularly.
  • Create and teach curriculum on topics such as work readiness, relationships, health, financial literacy, and other life skills areas of particular interest to young adults. 
  • Utilize real world contexts and excursions to promote connections and engagement.
  • Facilitate academic readiness workshops.
  • Analyze student tests for trends and advise students and staff on assets and needs in group or individual contexts.
  • Facilitate project-based learning that is hands on and engaging, and not based on traditional lecture based instruction.
  • Promote student leadership and ownership of experiences within the program. Redirect negative behaviors as needed; engage young people in reflection and work towards improvement of outlooks and behaviors.
  • Actively participate in designated meetings, training sessions and special events.
 
Qualifications:
  • Associate’s degree; Bachelor’s degree preferred.
  • Minimum of two years of teaching and / or youth engagement experience, preferably in working with high risk youth and the ability to facilitate groups.
  • Knowledge of additional languages a plus.
  • Positive youth development trainings a plus.
·        Available to work late mornings and afternoons, Monday through Friday.
  • Culturally competent, knowledgeable of community, appreciative of diversity, and able to ensure that programs are delivered in a way that is sensitive to the cultures of participants

Responsibilities:
