Program:
Phipps Neighborhoods, in collaboration with Hostos Community College and Montefiore Medical Center, runs a Career Network Program for young people ages 18 to 26 to begin careers in the allied health services sector. Working closely with Hostos to develop the academic, classroom-based preparation required, coupled with hands-on internships and experiential learning at Montefiore Medical Center, Phipps Neighborhoods supports young people in exploring and identifying health care professions that would otherwise be inaccessible to them. Hostos Community College built an Introduction to Health Careers seminar to expose young people to various employment opportunities in the field. Montefiore Medical Center will provide career develop and exploration and an externship opportunity that is tailored to the specific needs of out of school youth so as to create a clear pathway to employment.
 
Position Overview:
The Work Readiness Instructor will teach our Career Network participants work related skills that will poise them to acquire and sustain a career-oriented job. Working closely with an interdisciplinary team of a Life Skills Counselor, Career Navigator, Outreach and Intake Specialist and Administrative staff, the Work Readiness Instructor will deliver lessons from the newly created contextualized healthcare curriculum which allows students explore their skills and career options, and prepare for employment. This is an exciting opportunity for an educator who wants to engage young adults and help them choose and prepare for a meaningful career! Inspire young adults to live up to their potential and get on the path to self-sufficiency!
 
The Instructor will:
  • Based on existing contextualized curriculum, using Phipps Neighborhoods lesson plan template, prepare lesson plans by adapting those created with learning objectives clearly defined and engaging activities and exercises that illustrate the point of the lesson.
  • Work with students one-on-one and in small groups to assist with resume building, interviewing, and other work readiness activities as necessary.
  • In collaboration with the Career Navigator, develop specific interview preparation lessons to be delivered on a weekly basis.
  • Monitor participants' compliance with attendance and progress through participant observation tool. Report any individual student issues to Life Skills Counselor and Program Assistant on a weekly basis.
  • Maintain classroom documentation based on work readiness checklist and assignments from contextualized curriculum and enter data appropriately and accurately, as necessary. This includes but is not limited to updated resume, cover letter, performance rubrics and essays. Ensure every student has a portfolio with pertinent materials for employment.
  • Be responsible for the quality of the program being presented, student discipline, classroom maintenance, safety, behavior management and the security of all individual and supplies at their disposal.
  • Work with instructional and administrative staff to set high and measurable goals for student achievement.
  • Adapt teaching style and strategies to maximize student learning and retention.
  • Provide students with professional one-on-one feedback regarding their performance in the program.
  • Assist with placement of externship and perform site visits at Montefiore and other partner hospitals to ensure students are achieving success and managers are satisfied with student work.
  • Rotating with other staff, accompany students to Montefiore and Hostos and assist partner Instructors with behavior management as necessary. Reinforce lessons taught at the partner sites into the Work Readiness classes.
  • Support recruitment by interviewing potential candidates for training and providing feedback.
  • Attend all relevant meetings (supervision, staff meetings, case conference sessions, curriculum development, trainings and workshops, etc.).
  • Performs other duties as assigned by Program Director.
 
Minimum Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's degree in psychology, education, social work or other appropriate field preferred.
  • At least 2 years of career development and youth development experience.
  • At least 4 years of teaching, preferably within the NYC Department of Education or comparable system.
  • Strong communication skills-written and oral.
  • Independent, creative, self-starter who exhibits good judgment.
  • Flexible and adaptable.
  • Must enjoy working with at-risk young adults and have a strong initiative to work in a team.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office suite, Windows applications, internet and email required, experience with SMART Board helpful.
