Turning Point Brooklyn is hiring a Career and Vocational Counselor, a full-time position that requires a flexible weekday schedule, including 2 evenings per week. This position will be the lead on providing job development and career advancement services for our ABE, HSE, and ESOL students, as well as Literacy Zone participants, all of whom are primarily youth, but also include adults and many immigrants. Counselors work closely with teachers and administrative staff to provide 360 degree service including, but not limited to, job placement support and retention, as well as cultivation of community partnerships in support of job opportunities. ESOL Instructor P/T

Turning Point Brooklyn is seeking a part-time ESOL teacher.  The class meets 3 evenings per week (6pm-8pm), for a total of 10 work hours per week (class + flexible prep time). Staff are expected to be on-site between at least 5:30pm and 8:15pm, to conference with colleagues and students. Expected start date is 9/8/15.

The class is co-located at a local elementary school; flexibility, aptitude for working with multiple partners, and excellent communication skills are required. Teachers are responsible for a class of 15-20 students and must be comfortable with learner-centered, participatory lessons and a project-based approach.

Administrative Assistant-Summer 

Summary of Position: The program assistant is responsible for providing administrative support to the deputy and/or program director.   The program assistant will attend weekly individual and group supervision meetings, assist program managers with data analysis, complete clerical tasks, attend conferences/trainings as needed.

Summary of the Agency: The Coalition for Hispanic Family Services is a multi-service agency serving children and families of North Brooklyn.  These include foster care, adoption, youth development, primary health care, mental health, HIV/AIDS case management, community health education and outreach, in-service internships and after school education.
Duties:
  • Act as the first line of communication between Cornerstone & the community at large.  Respond to telephone inquiries, e-mails, and any written communication as directed. 
  • Type memos, correspondence, reports, and minutes for most meetings. 
  • Organize documents for all contracts and DOH requirements as directed
  • Prepare admission applications, collect and review all applications, and assist data clerk with application entry.
  • Assist Data Analyst and Program Managers in maintaining participant database including creation of attendance sheets for daily activities as well as onetime events
  • Assist Program Managers in analyzing program data and generate reports as needed      
  • Serve as liaison for main office:
  • Assure timely communication within the Cornerstone Community Center & CHFS
  • Maintain current records and files of staff, co-locators, participants, contracts, etc.  
  • All responsibilities related to petty cash for programming through operations following correct policy and procedure as directed
  • All responsibilities related to human resources including time sheets, new hire packets, scheduling interviews; all through following correct policy and procedure as directed. 
  • All responsibilities related to check request for stipends, vendors, etc. maintaining receipts, invoices, and time sheets.  
  • All responsibilities related to ordering supplies for programming through operations following correct policy and procedure as directed.
  • Maintaining Directors Calendar and Program Calendar
  • Participate in all trainings relevant to program and position
  • Order and maintain rosters for school foods snack, lunch and dinner programs.

Qualifications: 

  • College degree or comparable experience required.  
  • Must be highly organized and detail oriented with strong ability to multitask.
  • Must be highly computer literate, and proficient in Microsoft Office with concentrated strength in Microsoft Excel.

The Door is seeking a part-time HSE instructor to teach a HSE class for students, ages 17-24 years old, which are nearing test ready.   The goal of the class is to prepare students to take the HSE and score the highest score on the exam so that they will be prepared to enter college, advanced skills training workshops and/or employment.

Program Coordinator F/T

Union Settlement Association is an on-the-ground resource for East Harlem residents of all ages. We bring education, wellness and community-building programs to our neighborhood, empowering New Yorkers with opportunities to better their lives. 

We are seeking an Intergenerational Tutoring Program Coordinator to oversee a intergenerational tutoring program. Working with elementary schools in East Harlem, the Program Coordinator helps to pair older adults with young children with underdeveloped reading and language skills. The adults will serve as tutors and mentors for the students, working with them one-on-one each week. The Program Coordinator is also responsible for all aspects of this program, including recruitment, placement, scheduling, reporting and oversight, and will serve as the liaison with the New York City school system, OASIS and the volunteer tutors.

Responsibilities include:
  • Participate in planning sessions, including meetings with OASIS personnel, the Superintendent of New York City Community School District 4, and the principals and teachers in the participating elementary schools.
  • Conduct outreach to identify and recruit local residents interested in serving as volunteer tutors.
  • Conduct training sessions for the tutors.
  • Ensure all tutors are properly screened and are eligible to provide services in the New York City schools.
  • Collaborate with school principals and teachers to identify student participants, and to secure permission from parents and guardians for the tutoring sessions.
  • Establish a schedule of times and locations for the tutoring sessions.

The ideal candidate will have the following qualifications:
  • Bachelor’s Degree in related field preferred; Master’s Degree in related field a plus.  
  • Significant experience in education, community outreach, and/or program coordination.
  • Ability to undertake and complete multiple tasks at the same time.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills, including the ability to conduct outreach and make oral presentations.

College Retention Advisor -Full-Time  Bronx Community College

Under the supervision of the College Retention Advisor of Borough of Manhattan Community College, the College Retention Advisor will be responsible for providing on-campus support to students who have graduated from East Side House (ESH) college access programs. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skills, and /or ability required, but is not limited to:

Duties and Responsibilities: 
  • Manage a caseload of 30-35 students who attend Bronx Community College.
  • Developing individual Goal Plans with each student within the first 2 weeks of the semester.
  • Conduct one-on-one check-ins with each student at least twice per month.
  • Connect students to on-campus resources and activities. 
  • Provide on-campus academic advising for students and accompany them to the relevant services on campus.
  • Facilitate advisory sessions 
  • Assist students with early registration for the coming semester.
  • Maintain good relationships with the Admissions Office and Freshman Year Programs of Bronx Community College
  • Provide collegiate culture workshops to the four college access programs at ESH.

East Side House Settlement is a community resource in the South Bronx. The Group Leader is a part-time position working up to 15 hours a week and reports to the after-school Program Director. We are seeking creative support staff with experience working with the youth in the following (but not limited to) areas: Music, visual arts, media technology, dance, sports and recreation, health awareness and community leadership.

Duties and Responsibilities
  • Plan, implement and document successful educational, recreation, youth leadership, and community service and arts activities with school-aged children.
  • Adhere to policies and procedures in a pro-active manner, making the safety and care of children your primary focus.
  • Build a positive relationship with each after-school participant in your care, and foster positive connections between participants. Actively engage with children at all times with the goal of fostering the positive development of each child and the group.
  • Professional conduct at all times with school staff, parents, children, etc.
  • Effectively manage assigned group. Maintain and enforce progressive discipline policy.
  • Assist in enrollment, recording and submitting daily attendance records, and any other required documents to Director.
  • Inspect on a daily basis all facilities, equipment, and supplies and be sure all are accounted for and put away at the end of each day.
  • Work as a part of a collaborative team, providing support to any specialist implementing activities.
  • Actively participate in all aspects of staff or member development, including bi-weekly supervision, team meetings, pre-service training, and an additional at least 15 hours of training during the school year.

Knowledge, Education and Experience
  • High School Diploma with some college. 
  • Must have experience working with young children in a structured youth program or middle school, preferably in a racially, ethically, and socio-emotionally diverse urban community.

Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Conduct intake interviews with students and family members.
  • Meet with students in a group setting and individually to assist them in their academic, career and personal goals.
  • Conduct daily attendance outreach and home visits as necessary.
  • Facilitate group advisory and enrichment group sessions two times per week.
  • Consult with teachers and provide feedback to students on academic performance using a biweekly assessment. 
  • Maintain student charts and records to ensure milestones are being met.
  • Refer students to academic and support services as needed.
  • Arrange field trips, special events and extracurricular club activities.

 Assistant Director for the Youth and Adult Education Services (YAES) Bronx, NY 

Youth and Adult Education Services (YAES) is a program in the Department of Adult Education & Workforce Development at East Side House Settlement (ESH). YAES offers comprehensive High School Equivalency (HSE) preparation and TASC testing (formerly GED) to residents of the South Bronx. Students aged 16-24 years old receive instruction in reading, writing, math and science skills as well as College Access and Success services. Students also receive comprehensive social supports as well as Job Readiness, Financial Literacy, and Social/Emotional Skills.

The College Access & Retention program is also a key component of YAES. This program promotes and facilitates transition of all ESH High School/HSE students to College and provides extensive retention support to ensure their success. The Assistant Director is responsible for overseeing the inter-disciplinary staff team while they provide comprehensive educational and social supports to all YAES participants. 

Duties and Responsibilities
Under the supervision of the Department Director of Education and Workforce Development the Assistant Director’s duties include but not limited to the following:
  • Manage and supervise the HSE program towards meeting established Federal guidelines and standards, funder requirements and contractual obligations.
  • Conduct individual and group staff supervision on a weekly basis.
  • Develop and control budget for program services.
  • Submit reports to multiple agency and funding sources.
  • Represent the agency by attending meetings and workshops.
  • Ensure that staffing requirements are met, such as submission of evaluation and classroom reports by teachers.
  • Oversee the creation of innovative and contextualized student learning experiences.
  • Facilitate weekly staff meetings that review student progress, program implementation and service delivery.
  • Facilitate monthly meetings to review core data and other indicators of student progress.
  • Ensuring the implementation of youth development principles in all YAES programming.
  • Perform additional program support functions as required.
Professional Development and Team Planning Responsibilities
  • Oversee the planning, implementation and documentation of a departmental “Professional Development Plans”.
  • Maintain a “Professional Development Log” to document trainings and technical assistance.
  • Submit curricula and other professional materials to government and private funders as required.
  • Facilitate weekly and monthly YAES staff meetings to review Federal core data and standards and student outcomes as a means to assessing program quality and to modifying/developing program instruction and service design as needed.
Education and Skill Requirements
  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college with 4 years of experience in a not-for-profit community based setting.
  • Minimum three years management experience or Masters Degree in Education with two years management experience.
  • Knowledge and commitment to youth development principles.
  • Knowledge of adult literacy practices and GED/HSE transition issues.
  • Strong presentation skills; ability to represent the organization in various venues.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of community service/development.
  • Ability to read, analyze and interpret documents and information. 
  • Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts and draw valid conclusions.
