PT ESOL Instructor and Program Support
International Center, Catholic Charities Community Services

Summary:
The International Center provides educational programming for immigrants and refugees with the goal of improving learners’ English proficiency and communication skills. The incumbent will develop, design, and deliver thoughtful and effective ESOL classes for day laborers and their families at our office in Yonkers. 
 
Duties and Responsibilities: 
  • Course Development and Instruction: In coordination with the Director of Programs, design and deliver in-person 10-week ESOL courses over three semesters each year (September-June) at the beginner and high beginner level. Create thorough and well-developed class curricula focusing on communicative competence for immigrant workers.  In line with the current pedagogy, content will be meaningful and relevant to students’ self-sufficiency outside the classroom.
  • Manage and Support Students: Work with other Center staff and additional CCCS services to address student needs outside the classroom. Conduct participant intake, assess language proficiency, and identify goals. Provide ongoing support to promote learning, engagement, and retention. Work one-on-one with participants as needed.
  • Monitoring and evaluation: track attendance, implement class surveys/needs assessments, and assist with reporting for funders.
  • Additional Support: Provide general administrative and program support for the classes including assisting with student registration, pre- and post-testing students using BEST Plus, and maintaining student portfolios and files. 
  • Professional Development: Attend 14 hours of in-person professional development provided by the Hudson Valley Regional Adult Education Network (RAEN) each contract year.

Position Type and Expected Hours of Work:
This is a part-time position and work hours are generally evenings from 7 to 9:30 pm two to three times per week. Weekend hours may be required to meet student needs.   
 
Qualifications:
  • Education and/or experience required:
  • Bachelor’s degree in Education, ESOL or related field; Masters preferred.
  • Experience working with multi-level adult ESOL learners in various contexts.
  • Experience with online instruction.
  • Experience with BEST Plus preferred.
  • Previous experience working with students from diverse cultural backgrounds.
  • Experience with community outreach a plus.
 
Skills, Licenses and/or competencies required:
  • Highly motivated and self-starter.
  • Excellent interpersonal, oral and written communication skills.
  • Computer literacy (expertise with Office Suite and Google Drive).
  • Ability/willingness to work occasional Saturdays.

Educational Case Manager
The Adult Learning Center (ALC) at NYC College of Technology seeks a part-time Educational Case Manager (ECM) for our IELCE funded program. The ALC collaborates with workforce development partners to provide advanced English learners free healthcare training which includes contextualized English instruction.
Primary responsibilities:
  • Advise and support advanced English language learners enrolled in Medical Assisting and Direct Support Professional trainings, through in-class workshops and one-on-one sessions. Counsel them on career prospects, academic goals, and personal issues, ensuring confidentiality
  • Identify and establish joint referral relationships with relevant social service agencies, community-based organizations, and with Workforce1 centers
  • Assess student needs and make appropriate referrals to social services and other agencies
  • Provide crisis intervention when needed
  • Assist students with mapping their career plans, including related academic and personal goals
  • Track student progress, attendance and satisfaction, while completing required data entry tasks
  • Work closely with instructors and administrative staff to meet program objectives; this includes the monitoring and documentation of progress and outcomes for both students and alumnae
  • Provide support during both the application process and the orientation of new students
  • Attend 14 hours of RAEN Professional Development
  • Ad hoc duties as assigned
Requirements:
  • Bachelor’s degree in a social work, counseling or a related field; Master’s degree preferred
  • Relevant experience in counseling individuals
  • Strong awareness of the barriers facing immigrants looking to integrate into the US workforce and academic environment
  • Familiar with strengths-based, culturally competent approaches

Duties
  • Conduct in person and remote Academic instruction in all subject areas (particularly ELA) to young adult participants 17-24 years of age (both in person and remote) enrolled in a workforce development program located in the Bronx, NY.
  • Creating a classroom environment that is conducive to learning; inclusive of all different learning styles and addresses varied group dynamics. Lesson delivery that is engaging, energetic and promotes student retention. Reinforce program policies and procedures to maintain a healthy and safe learning environment. Ability to develop and implement both synchronous and asynchronous activities for students both in person and remote.
  • Meet student retention goals. Providing opportunities to acknowledge student achievement. Follow up on absent students.
  • Apply technology and various teaching strategies to enhance the learning experience of students.
  • Provide assessments and reports as necessary and provide individual feedback to students to ensure their success. 
  • TABE pre/post testing and TASC assessment testing
  • Participate in regular staff and program planning meetings
  • Disseminate program information as appropriate; provide outreach and training to potential candidates about MMCC services
  • Maintain necessary documentation records for program evaluation and audit purposes
  • Attend mandatory professional development training and meetings for purposes of learning best practices and current trends in adult learning
  • Monitor and report on student progress. Communicate with case managers for support.
  • Provide feedback to supervisor for improving the quality of service delivery. Communicate issues and problem solving.

  • Qualifications:
  • A minimum of three years of demonstrated experience in high school and/or adult education, Bachelors degree (Masters preferred) in Education or related subject. Teaching license preferred.

The School of Continuing and Professional Studies at Lehman College, CUNY is seeking an instructor to prepare adult students to take and pass the Test Assessing Secondary Completion (formerly known as the GED). The Test Assessing Secondary Completion (TASC) is the high school equivalency test in New York State.
 
The instructor must have a proven track record in math and literacy instruction and experience teaching adults. The instructor will be expected to develop and/or implement a high school equivalency curriculum and be able to assess and measure student progress. 
 
QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Bachelors degree required; Masters degree preferred
  • Knowledge of high school equivalency curricula and TASC testing requirements

Position Summary
Opportunities for a Better Tomorrow (OBT) is looking for a full time innovative, ELA and Social Studies Instructor in our Advance and Earn Program.  Under the supervision of the Academic Coordinator, the Advance and Earn ELA and Social Studies Instructor will be responsible for designing, implementing, and developing interactive lessons to support educational gain and/or TASC attainment. The instructor will work closely with the Academic Team to support in developing engaging, challenging, and impactful educational programming. Advance and Earn supports opportunity youth 16-24 in three program components including contextualized academic programming at the Pre-HSE level, comprehensive High School Equivalency and work-based learning and sector focused advanced training.  

Responsibilities:
  • Develop interactive and intentional curriculum for pre-HSE and HSE students that seeks to facilitate grade gain, NRS level gain and/or TASC readiness
  • Track, monitor and input data on all funder and internal data bases on student and program milestones and outcomes 
  • Utilize dynamic platforms to facilitate classes in the remote environment
  • Facilitate meaningful and interactive classes onsite, when applicable 
  • Employ strength based, youth centered approach to support strong attendance and participation 
  • Administer the TABE test 
  • Work collaboratively with the Advance and Earn and Academic Team to ensure cohesive messaging and services to youth 
  • Attend required program, team and agency meetings and events
  • Attend trainings and monitor trends on optimizing student learning 
  • All other appropriate duties as assigned by supervisor

Position Description
We are seeking volunteer English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) instructors to facilitate a summer conversation group for Beginner to High Beginner students and/or a Computer Skills class for Beginner and Intermediate learners. Volunteers will be working with immigrant populations primarily from the Latino, Chinese, and Arabic communities of Sunset Park, Brooklyn. This is an excellent opportunity for TESOL teacher trainees and recent graduates from TESOL certification programs looking to gain hands-on teaching experience and get regular feedback from an experienced teacher trainer. Volunteers report directly to the Manager of Community Education. All classes will take place remotely. 

Primary Responsibilities
  • Provide instruction online using Zoom
  • Prepare lesson plans in advance of each class 
  • Prepare and distribute instructional materials for classroom/homework use
  • Maintain daily attendance records
  • Manage the classroom effectively to maximize student learning
  • Customize instructional materials to create high quality lesson plans using an integrated and relevant, student-driven curriculum

Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree (BA) required; TESOL certificate preferred
  • Appropriate reading, writing, listening, and speaking skills in English
  • Ability to provide services in a manner sensitive to the backgrounds and cultures of program participants
  • Language skills
    • Computer skills instructors must speak Spanish and/or Mandarin
    • Spanish and Mandarin fluency is preferred, but not required for conversation group leaders

Time Commitment
  • This is a part time volunteer position and begins in early to mid-July and ends on August 30th, 2021. There are possibilities for extension beyond this date. 
  • Each class requires 4 hours of instructional time per week, divided into two days
  • Volunteer may elect to teach more than one class
