HSE Instructor P/T
Future Now at Bronx Community College provides learning opportunities to enrich the academic, social and professional development of young adults, ages 16-24. Future Now’s central mission is to help young people create successful futures through the attainment of a higher education degree. Our goal is to ensure that all of our students become self-sufficient leaders, who in turn, will become powerful role models for our current students and positive contributors to themselves, their families and their communities. 
Responsibilities:
  • Facilitate all instructional aspects of the HSE class.
  • Develop lesson plans and activities to supplement assigned texts.
  • Conduct Pre and Post Assessment Tests (TABE Exam)
  • Manage attendance records for students.
  • Maintain a daily average attendance of 15 out of 20 students per day.
  • Maintain daily communication with Assistant Director regarding student's progress and attendance issues.
  • Maintain a classroom environment that is stimulating, supports individual and group learning and is rigorous and nurturing
  • Maintain accurate student records and all student contacts
  • Complete any relevant responsibilities and functions as assigned by director.​
Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's Degree in Education or related field required.
  • Minimum of two years of experience teaching all HSE subjects
  • Experience in curriculum design and implementation
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills

Part-Time Queens pm ESOL Instructor (Spanish Speaking) 
Make the Road New York (MRNY) builds the power of Latino and working class communities to achieve dignity and justice through organizing, policy innovation, transformative education, and survival services. Make the Road New York operates neighborhood-based community centers in Bushwick,Brooklyn; Jackson Heights, Queens; Port Richmond, Staten Island; and Brentwood, Long Island. With a membership of 20,000 low-income New Yorkers, MRNY tackles the critical issues facing our community: workplace justice, tenants’ rights, immigrant civil rights, language-access, LGBTQ justice, public education, health care access, and immigration reform.

MRNY is a multi-service organization. Our Education Department offers English to Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL), Spanish-language literacy, computer literacy, citizenship preparation and in-school and after-school youth programs. Our Community Organizing Projects help New Yorkers to implement strategies to combat shared problems, and develop leadership and the capacity for civic participation. Our Departments of Legal, Health & Support Services provides direct legal representation, case management, and facilitated enrollment into public health insurance programs, training, and strategic support for members and organizing campaigns. Our attorneys and advocates specialize in labor and employment law, public benefits, disability benefits, housing law, healthcare and health insurance access, immigration, public education, domestic violence, and LGBTQ (Lesbian, Gay,Bisexual, Transgender and Queer) civil rights issues.

Current Opening: Make the Road New York's Adult Literacy Team is seeking an experienced, bilingual/Spanish proficient ESOL instructor committed to social justice for an intensive part-time position at our our Jackson Heights, Queens community center for our Sept 2017- June 2018 academic year cycle (and potentially for work again beginning in September 2018, depending upon budget.) 
The instructor will teach ESOL as well as do class planning, materials creation, individualized follow up with students, and some meetings and professional development.

Strongly Preferred: Teaching Certification or Masters in TESOL; experience working in community based social justice organizations; interest in collaboration and professional development with team members.

Required: BA, at least 3 yrs. experience teaching ESOL to adults & multiple ESOL level classes. Must be creative, organized, and committed to thematic instruction and learner-centered, participatory education; must be able to speak some Spanish with students outside of class if not occasionally within class; Sense of humor/good team player a plus. Excellent computer skills, BEST Plus certification.

Class Schedules:
Classes will run from early Sept thru the end of June 2018 with the following schedule:
Tues - Thursdays, 6:15-9:45 pm, High beginning/low intermediate
Total hrs/wk:
16-17 hrs: (10.5 teaching hrs, 5.25 prep, .5 for mtgs and communication with students)+ on average 1 hr wk for meetings- depending on the week

Salary Information: Starting compensation is based on a scale set by a democratically-elected personnel committee and will depend on factors such as experience and education. Typically the hourly rate is in the $20's but you're paid for prep hours so it comes out on par with other community based salary rates.

Writing & Curriculum Director, Writing Corps
Writing Corps designs and delivers intensive writing classes that sit at the nexus of art and literacy to help students find their voice. We seek to address the challenges Harlem Children Zone (HCZ) students face in tackling rigorous texts and composing standards or grade-level aligned writing on their paths to college readiness.

Writing Corps promotes literacy as an essential tool to build the strong critical thinking and writing skills necessary for our students to excel academically and in life. We bring professional writers – poets, playwrights, journalists, authors, and emcees - into program to collaborate with afterschool leadership and teaching artists on curricula that integrates literacy skills with youth development, arts enrichment, and college readiness practices. We aim to help build students’ skills, knowledge, confidence, and the academic behaviors that embrace writing as an empowering mode of analysis and self-awareness.

During the summer, Writing Corps facilitates Project EOS (Educational Opportunities for Success) bringing HCZ students to a college/university to participate in an intensive project-based program that simulates a college seminar so students can build their skills and confidence in themselves as future college students.

We are seeking a dynamic Director to lead the Writing Corps program and a team of Writing and Curriculum Coordinators and Specialists at our after-school sites.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Create writing workshops, showcases, and educational opportunities that encourage academic enrichment
  • Develop and implement creative methods of teaching and assessment
  • Supervise and coach staff and provide constructive feedback on progress and performance
  • Develop programs, procedures and processes where needed, including student services, operations, as well as staffing and budgets
  • Ensure program consistently meet and exceed the goals set where appropriate
  • Manage and review program data, and ensure completion and dissemination of all reports as required
  • Foster strong relationships and effective communication and collaboration with students, parents, staff, and HCZ leadership
  • Perform others duties as assigned

Qualification, Skills and Knowledge Requirements
  • A commitment to the mission and programs of HCZ
  • Experience working in youth development especially with disadvantaged youth
  • Bachelor’s degree required; Master’s degree preferred (M.F.A. is a plus)
  • 2+ years of experience in teaching or curriculum design experience
  • Impeccable writing and communication skills
  • Extremely organized and detail-oriented
  • Experience managing and leading a medium-sized team to outcomes
  • Strong leadership and collaborative practices

ABE/HSE Reading & Writing Teacher (P/T)

The Lehman College Adult Learning Center is seeking a dynamic part-time ABE/HSE Reading & Writing Teacher to work with a diverse group of adult learners.  The class meets twice a week for three hours each day. The position begins in September 2017; starting salary is $32/hr. The Lehman ALC is currently hiring for morning or evening classes.
 
Essential duties include:                                                                                  
  • Providing high-quality theme-based instruction to help students develop their reading and writing skills
  • Designing engaging lessons to help students foster a love of reading and learning
  • Collaborating with staff and teachers to develop best teaching practices and enriching materials
  • Reviewing and communicating class progress with both staff and students
  • Actively partaking in in-house teacher meetings and citywide professional development
  • Maintaining class attendance and communicating with students about program participation issues
  • Participating in new student orientations and program-wide events and activities
  • Conducting required assessments including TABE and TASC Readiness exams
  • Having a willingness to learn and become part of the ALC community of teachers and learners

Education Requirements:
Candidate must have Bachelor's degree and relevant teaching and education experience. Prior adult education experience, Master’s Degree a plus.

Responsibilities:
  • Manage the Computer Program which provides a variety of computer classes, workshops and labs to over 500 members per year at the Training & Employment Fund (TEF) sites (New York City boroughs, Hicksville, White Plains and Albany)
  • Manage TEF-wide testing and assessment services including: proctoring services, liaising with testing administrators at CUNY and SUNY schools, and other vendors
  • Integrate technological innovations in the daily operations of the Learning Centers in the New York City boroughs, Hicksville and White Plains.
 
Qualifications:
  • Bachelor’s degree in Adult Education, Counseling, Human/Social Service or five (5) years equivalent experience required; master’s preferred
  • Minimum five (5) years experience managing education or training programs for adult learners; to include two (2) years supervisory experience
  • Proficient in Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint
  • Ability to work flexible hours, including some evenings and weekends
