Looking for teaching experience with a low time commitment? Interested in supporting adult students in the classroom? Excited about math, reading, science, or social studies? You might be a good candidate for teaching GED content with Community Impact! We are starting a new session that will run from the beginning of June to the end of August and are looking for teachers. Candidates are expected to be able to commit to teaching at least one subject, one day each week, with a set curriculum. They should be able to commit to 3 hours of class and 1 hour of prep work per week. Position Description We are seeking volunteer English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) instructors to facilitate a summer conversation group for Beginner to High Beginner students and/or a Computer Skills class for Beginner and Intermediate learners. Volunteers will be working with immigrant populations primarily from the Latino, Chinese, and Arabic communities of Sunset Park, Brooklyn. This is an excellent opportunity for TESOL teacher trainees and recent graduates from TESOL certification programs looking to gain hands-on teaching experience and get regular feedback from an experienced teacher trainer. The Spring program runs February 3rd - May 7th. The New Teacher Initial Meeting is scheduled for January 24th, with flexible training options during that week. Teachers may volunteer as little as one day a week or up to fours days a week and teach English to adult immigrants. Experience is preferred. Teachers will instruct adults in high school level classes to prepare them to take the TASC (high school equivalency) official exam. Depending on your availability, teachers must commit to 2-5 hours of teaching per week with some preparation. You may choose to teach Language Arts, Social Studies, Math and/or Science classes one or two days a week. Morning classes run from 10:30am - 1:30pm and evening classes from 6:00pm - 8:30pm. The spring semester begins on February 5th and ends on Ma 10th. The High School Equivalency Program is part of the comprehensive adult education and workforce development network at Community Impact, Columbia University which helps adults move toward college and employment opportunities with livable wages. Strong English skills are required, as well as an interest in teaching, energy, motivation, and a commitment to getting involved and making a positive difference in the community. Community Impact at Columbia University offers an ESOL program serving adult immigrants in the Upper Manhattan area. We are now recruiting volunteer teachers for our summer session. It will run from now until August 17, 2017. Classes are held in the afternoon and evening, Monday-Thursday at Columbia University's Morningside campus. We have six classes ranging from beginner through advanced levels: Levels 1-5 are taught with textbooks that form the foundation of each lesson, and Level 6 has a looser curriculum (no textbook) that teachers use to design their own lessons.
