HSE Teacher - Education and Career Services (ECS), Full-Time - Bronx
Job Description
  • Provide a safe learning environment for students, filled with opportunities to experience success, academic advancement, and support;
  • Teach all subjects of the TASC: Math, Science, Writing, Reading, and Social Studies;
  • Develop curriculum maps and level-appropriate lesson plans that promote balanced literacy and student-centered instruction, addressing multiple learning styles;
  • Provide instruction in virtual settings, including synchronous video classes and asynchronous assignments;
  • Lead educational field trips (virtual during remote work) and contribute to planning of events and celebrations;
  • Administer the TABE assessment for new students;
  • Teach customized enrichment classes to those who have passed some subjects of the TASC;
  • Maintain and enter attendance in databases;
  • Write progress notes for every student, with attention to those who are mandated to services;
  • Communicate with other staff about participants’ progress and challenges and collaborate to create success plans for students experiencing difficulties;
  • Participate in weekly staff meetings;
  • Provide tutoring to active participants as well as graduates as time allows;
  • Assist with Education referrals to appropriate settings and providers;
  • Assist with development of and/or Facilitate a Project-Based learning group for 14 and 15 year-olds during SYEP;
  • Other duties as assigned by Supervisor or Director
Qualifications
  • Minimum of BA/BS degree, with experience in tutoring and/or teaching youth;
  • Demonstrated ability to engage, support and motivate disconnected youth;
  • Ability to work effectively with diverse group of students and staff;
  • Classroom management practices rooted in youth development principles;
  • Familiarity with all subjects on the TASC;
  • Willingness to participate in professional development both internally and externally;
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills;
  • Commitment to developing a safe learning environment; and,
  • Open to working in a collaborative environment

​ESL Instructor- Remote Evening Class
 
The Jewish Community Council of GCI is looking to hire an experienced Adult ESL Instructor to provide remote ESL instruction (via Zoom) to adults. Class will “meet” Tuesday and Thursday evenings from 6-9pm. 

​Duties include: assessing/testing students, providing appropriate remote instruction etc. BA, experience teaching remote classes, and excellent English written/oral skills required. Bi-lingual Spanish a must.  BEST Plus certification strongly preferred.

Inwood Community Services, located in Northern Manhattan, is seeking a part-time ESOL instructor to teach a remote class on Monday/Wednesday or Tuesday/Thursday 6:00 – 9:15 PM, to start the last week in January and run through June.
We seek:
  • Experienced, passionate teachers with good interpersonal skills committed to empowering adult immigrant students through English language education
  • Applicants with 3 plus years-experience teaching English as a Second Language who have had some experience with remote instruction
  • Best-Plus Test Certified instructors or willing to become certified through training within the first semester of hire
  • Instructors experienced in teaching on Zoom is a plus
Responsibilities:
  • Provide remote ESOL Instruction for beginning or intermediate-level adult students (depending on class) to develop skills in speaking, listening, reading and writing
  • Develop and implement student-centered lesson plans based on student need that engage students and assist them in navigating the activities of their lives
  • Administer Best Plus Post- test 
  • Maintain records of student attendance and progress; produce progress reports as needed
  • Participate in professional development and staff meetings and work as a team member with Counselors and Program staff to deliver effective remote programming that motivates students to persist and succeed in the program
  • report to the ICS Director of Adult Literacy and Education
Requirements:
  • Bachelor’s Degree required; Certificate or Master’s degree in teaching English to adult speakers of other languages preferred.
  • Certified administrator of Best Plus test or willing to become certified.
  • Proficiency in running virtual classes. Some experience in running classes on Zoom is a plus.
  • Ability to connect with our immigrant / adult learning population.
Compensation: based on experience.

ICS is a community-based not-for-profit with a 31 year Adult Literacy program and a long-tenured staff.  We seek teachers who live in the local area as well as those living out of the neighborhood who are committed to teaching ESOL.

Make the Road New York hiring: Part Time evening ESOL Instructor for Jan-June Zoom-based class
Make the Road New York (MRNY) builds the power of Latino and working class communities to achieve dignity and justice through organizing, policy innovation, transformative education, and survival services. Make the Road New York operates neighborhood-based community centers in Bushwick, Brooklyn; Jackson Heights, Queens; Port Richmond, Staten Island; and Brentwood, Long Island. With a membership of 20,000 low-income New Yorkers, MRNY tackles the critical issues facing our community: workplace justice, tenants’ rights, immigrant civil rights, language-access, LGBTQ justice, public education, health care access, and immigration reform.
 
Make the Road New York  https://maketheroadny.org/ is a multi-service organization. Our Education Department offers English to Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL), citizenship preparation, health job training classes and in-school and after-school youth programs. Our Community Organizing Projects help New Yorkers to implement strategies to combat shared problems, and develop leadership and the capacity for civic participation. And our Departments of Legal, Health & Support Services provides direct legal representation, case management, and facilitated enrollment into public health insurance programs, training, and strategic support for members and organizing campaigns. Our attorneys and advocates specialize in labor and employment law, public benefits, disability benefits, housing law, healthcare and health insurance access, immigration, public education, domestic violence, and LGBTQ (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender and Queer) civil rights issues.
 
Current Opening:  MRNY is hiring 1 Part Time evening ESOL teacher to assess students, build community and confidence in the classroom, and then design/organize and deliver ESOL instruction that is level appropriate and thematically relevant to immigrant community residents seeking to improve their English skills and their lives and circumstances.  
 
Responsibilities: 
  1. Curricular design work- Hand in course outlines, unit and lesson plans and related materials in the requested format by the deadlines that are set and agreed to. Maintain all of that in the Google drive, and integrate certain thematic content and materials into lessons as required by funders or decided by the team;   
  2. Student Assessment- combine BEST Plus initial assessments with original reading and writing assessments at the beginning of the cycle and continue to assess students in an intentional and structured way throughout the cycle
  3. Instruction- Deliver content material in ways that take into account students’ levels and learning styles, the need to pace and scaffold information, and the need to balance the 4 skills + vocabulary development and grammar skill development
  4. Communication with and support of students - Call absent students every day and document calls; make referrals to MRNY’s case manager as needed
  5. Related admin/grant related tasks- in addition to tracking attendance, help with post testing, grading of samples of students’ work, and writing monthly progress notes for a portion of students in the class, as funders require
  6. Participate in meetings and trainings- attend external professional development according to funders’ requirements, as well as 1 on 1 support meetings, team and staff meetings
 
Strongly Preferred:  At least 3 yrs. ESOL teaching experience, experience teaching remote classes, experience teaching adults  

Requirements
: BA, Teaching Certification or Masters in TESOL; experience using Zoom and online platforms;  experience working in community based social justice organizations; interest in collaboration and professional development with team members.
Must be creative, organized, and committed to thematic instruction and learner-centered, participatory education; for ESOL classes must be able to speak some Spanish with students outside of class if not occasionally within class; Seeking candidates with senses of humor, good team players, teachers with excellent computer skills and BEST Plus certification (ESOL).
 
ESOL Teaching Position: 
  • The teacher will teach T-W-Th evenings 6:15-9:15pm (9 hrs)
  • The teacher will be paid for 15 hrs/wk ( 9 teaching hours, 4.5 prep hours, 1-1.5 hrs for meetings with your support person and calls to students). Additionally, occasional meeting hours, trainings, or admin work hours will be added  if/as needed.  Teachers will have access to materials, copiers, supplies, etc at MRNY as well. 
  • Level: low/high intermediate ESOL
 
Length of job:  The job will run from early January 2021  to late June 2021. (Employment could be renewed again for the school year starting 8 or 9/21, depending on the teacher’s performance and funding).   
 
Salary Information: Starting compensation is based on a scale set by a democratically- elected personnel committee and will depend on factors such as experience and education.
