CUNY Start Cooperating English Teacher
Teacher Training Position
(Continuing Education Teacher– Hourly)
GENERAL DESCRIPTION
CUNY Start is an intensive pre-matriculation program that helps CUNY associate degree-seeking students with significant remedial needs increase their academic proficiency in English and/or in mathematics prior to enrollment in college credit classes. CUNY Start is recognized for its carefully designed curriculum and pedagogy, ongoing professional development, and mentor-based training model. CUNY Start programs are currently located on eight CUNY campuses: Borough of Manhattan Community College, Bronx Community College, College of Staten Island, Hostos Community College, Kingsborough Community College, LaGuardia Community College, New York City College of Technology, and Queensborough Community College.

CUNY Start’s English program offers semester-based and shorter term course offerings that helps students develop their English skills, prepare for college-level English classes, and meet CUNY proficiency milestones.

JOB DESCRIPTION
The CUNY Start Cooperating English Teacher position (“Cooperating English Teacher”) is a paid training opportunity to learn to use a successful, student-centered approach and curriculum with CUNY students who have significant remedial English needs. Under the supervision of the Program Director, the Cooperating English Teacher is responsible for learning and/or supporting the work of an experienced CUNY Start Instructor in implementing the CUNY Start English curriculum.

CUNY Start may deliver instruction in multiple formats: in-person, online or as hybrid classes that are both online and in-person. Online instruction may be a combination of synchronous and asynchronous teaching that is determined at the discretion of program management. Online work may entail instruction on such platforms as Blackboard, Zoom, and other remote instructional tools that are available and approved by the University and which support the goals and practices of the program. During periods of remote teaching, CUNY Start Teachers remain responsible for maintaining high-levels of student engagement and enacting the CUNY Start curriculum with fidelity to the program model.

Responsibilities:
  • Key duties include, but will not be limited to the following:
  • Work under the guidance and leadership of the Lead Teacher;
  • Study lesson plans thoroughly in advance of all classes;
  • Observe classes and assist the Lead Teacher in and outside of the classroom;
  • Assist students as they plan, revise, and edit essays, and respond to writing with suggestions for revision;
  • Facilitate student group work and guide group interactions;
  • Lead classroom activities of increasing length over the course of the training semester;
  • Attend and participate in regular professional development meetings;
  • Assist in student conferences, orientation, testing, and recruitment;
  • Attend and participate in team meetings with advisors and teachers;
  • Other related duties as assigned.
Requirements
The preferred candidate will possess the educational and professional qualifications appropriate to the teaching assignment as indicated below:
  • Bachelor's degree required; Master's degree preferred;

Employment
$40.45 per hour as a Continuing Education Teacher (CET). Please note that the CET rate is subject to future collective bargaining increases;
Approximately 25 hours per week, depending on holidays and campus calendar; Monday-Friday in daytime programs; Monday-Thursday in afternoon/evening programs.

Appointment period: approximately six (6) months from appointment date; a maximum of 530 hours for a full six-month appointment.

Positions available at multiple campuses. Campuses with priority hiring needs are currently the College of Staten Island and Kingsborough Community College.
Cooperating English Teachers who successfully complete at least one semester of service in the CUNY Start program are eligible to apply for appointments as a Core or Support Teacher in CUNY Start, to the extent vacancies are available. Summer teaching may be required.

Adult Ed Admin Coordinator
Full-Time Non-Exempt Bklyn/SI, NY, US

Make the Road New York builds the power of Latino and working class communities to achieve dignity and justice through organizing, policy innovation, transformative education, and survival services. Make the Road NY operates neighborhood-based community centers in Bushwick, Brooklyn; Jackson Heights, Queens; Port Richmond, Staten Island, Brentwood, Long Island and White Plains, Westchester. With a membership of more than 24,000 low-income New Yorkers, Make the Road tackles the critical issues facing our community: workplace justice, tenants’ rights, immigrant rights, language-access, LGBTQ justice, public education, health care access, and immigration reform.

The Department:
One-third of adult New Yorkers– over two million people– lack either English proficiency or a high school diploma, but inadequate funding means that just 3% of New Yorkers have access to critical classes. Make the Road New York’s Adult Education team helps meet this need by providing English, tech, citizenship preparation, Bridge to Health Careers, and Community Health Worker classes to over 1,300 adults annually and by working in coalition with other providers across the city and state to push for better funding for adult education classes for all New Yorkers.

The Role:
The Adult Education Admin Coordinator at Make the Road NY designs and carries out the outreach, orientation/testing, intake and post testing for the adult education classes including ESOL, Civics, Food Handlers Certification and Health Job Training Program. This position is based in Bushwick because the classes are offered in Bushwick. This position will be carried out in coordination with MRNY staff from our Health, Admin, Adult Ed, Volunteer Management, Communications teams and others. The person in this position will also work closely with the outreach specialist and other members of the admin leadership team in order to strategize on and implement outreach and other more general admin work work to keep the Ad Ed classes filled and running smoothly.

Responsible for the coordination of: intake, enrollment, attendance, data collection, post-testing, re-enrollment, data gathering and reporting for classes in SI and Brooklyn.

Key responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following:
Intake for Adult Education Classes (ESOL, Civics and ESOL/Food Protection classes):
  • Staff, organize, and run intake events three times per year, drawing hundreds of interested community members into MRNY’s BK and SI offices for information, orientation, testing, and enrollment.
  • Serve as central program contact for teachers, students, and management during class cycles.
  • Ensure proper collection and submission of student attendance and testing data by setting and enforcing deadlines, entering program data into Salesforce and the appropriate databases, and instituting quality control measures.
  • Support retention goals by tracking student absenteeism, calling absent students to remind them of class and encouraging their return, and flagging related issues to teachers and management.
  • Support teachers and admin decision making by providing periodic reports and updates regarding student progress, attendance, and other measures.
  • Provide teachers and admin staff with training on program processes such as outreach, intake, re-enrollment, data entry in Salesforce, retention activities, etc.
  • Ensure student and program records are complete and accurate in advance of grantor site visits, prepare presentation materials, attend to grantor needs and requests during site visits.
  • Fulfill Senior Grant Manager requests for information and reports; execute tasks as directed.
  • Support and supervise staff and interns.
  • Represent Make the Road at grantor informational meetings, software and testing training events, and other functions.
Oversee/Supervise Health training class Recruitment (Bridge and CHW)
  • Working in coordination with outreach specialist--- as part of that, set outreach/intake weekly goals and send updates to interested stakeholders weekly
  • Communicating directly with individuals, agency partners, and others across the city to promote the programs;
  • Updating and distributing outreach materials via email, social media, mailings, street flyering and agency drop offs as needed.
Oversee Orientation/ Testing and Enrollment process (Bridge and CHW):
  • Ensure enrollment numbers of 22-30 students per class:
  • Making and tracking of orientation/testing/ interview appointments for trainings
  • Orienting potential candidates about the programs
  • Assessing students to determine eligibility
  • Enrolling students in classes using an in house Salesforce Database
  • Maintaining data related to outreach and intake in a specialized Google database for this purpose as well as SF if/as necessary
Other administrative responsibilities:
  • Enable the organization and department to attract and keep funders, and assess and improve our work - by maintaining registration, attendance, and other necessary data in Salesforce, and collecting other information as decided by the department or mandated by funders-ie- intake data, testing data, work authorization and educational level documentation, survey data, etc
  • Filling out any forms needed, answering and making phone calls, photocopying, faxing, filing, typing, updating waiting lists.
  • Read and respond to MRNY emails
  • Support with other organizational and adult education department projects as needed
Supervising direct reporting staff and volunteers regularly: to move the work forward and to check in on the status of work toward our goals
  • Managing two 40 hour/week admin assistants as well as one 30 hour/week PT admin assistant who will support the project work during intensive summer and late Fall/Winter intake periods (6-7 mouths/yr for June-mid Sept, mid-Oct-early Jan), and working with our volunteer management team to leverage volunteer support
  • Provide direct supervision to admin staff in a manner that promotes monthly growth and development in skills and potential by:
  • Holding 1 on 1s to review work plans for any health training outreach/intake support staff
  • Calling/facilitating health training team meetings as needed with adult ed, health and volunteer partners
  • Scheduling and preparing agendas for those meetings
  • Participate fully in supervisory, department, all-staff and cross-department meetings and retreats as well as professional development trainings quarterly
Team/Org Communication:
  • Attend all team, leadership team, MRNY staff, and other meetings as needed
  • Stay on top of all emails relevant to job description and organizational needs
  • Maintain communication with HR and IT/tech support for any needs that arise
  • Identify communicate program needs to the Program Director
  • Assist in program development by participating in on-going reflection and change making process
Qualifications:
  • Eligible to work in the US
  • Must be fully vaccinated with and FDA approved COVID-19 vaccine prior to first day of employment
  • BA, case management experience- minimum 3 years
  • Bilingual Spanish English
Preferred Skills/experience:
experience working in immigrant services and/or community-based social justice organizations,   experience engaging in collaborative project development and educational programming/human services delivery with team members
Salary and Benefits:  Starting salary is based on a scale set by a democratically-elected personnel committee and will depend on factors such as experience and education. MRNY offers an excellent benefit package including health insurance, 401K, and generous paid vacation, sick, personal days. The Adult Education Program Manager at Community Impact provides oversight and management of a robust GED program including two core programs: Fast Track and CAFÉ Prep, as well as several extracurricular programs such as Computer Training, Job Road and Social Service referrals.  The program serves 550 participants annually on the University campus and at satellite locations. The Manager recruits, trains and supervises approximately 30 Columbia work-study student staff and 40 volunteer teachers and tutors; tracks and delivers government grant outcomes, and performs administrative functions.

Community Impact is one of four departments in the University Life Division at Columbia University which is focused on enhancing the student experience across Columbia’s 17 schools and colleges.

Qualifications:  BA (MA preferred) with three years minimum experience in adult education required; prior experience in program management, staff supervision and training and oversight of government grant deliverables required.

Revolution Prep Tutors work primarily from home with the ability to earn competitive pay, benefits (including health insurance, life insurance, and 401K), and quarterly bonuses. We are looking for tutors who have a love for learning and an engaging personality and who are comfortable meeting with and making recommendations to families regarding the ongoing needs of their student.

In addition to online tutoring, this position involves teaching in-person SAT prep courses through the Columbia S-Prep program. Classes will be held at the Columbia University Medical Center (104 Haven Avenue, New York, NY) Saturdays, 12/3/22 to 5/6/23, from 1-3:00 p.m. and Saturdays, 1/28/23 to 5/6/ 23 from 9-11:00 a.m. Revolution Prep will provide paid training and supply all materials for the courses.

About the Role
The Hybrid Tutor role is made up of the following responsibilities for the approximate percent of a tutor’s work schedule:
  • Tutor students in a variety of academic and test prep subjects on-line and in-person (80%)
  • Communicate with families regarding student progress including making recommendations for student success (10%)
  • Participate in ongoing professional development and subject expansion (5%)
  • Prepare for sessions using Revolution Prep provided materials (5%)
Professional Requirements
  • Bachelor’s degree required; advanced degree welcomed
  • Experience teaching or tutoring and familiarity with classroom management desired but not required

Schedule Requirements
Tutors choose a delivery target between 16 and 40 hours per week and post recommended availability during prime time (see below) in order to reach their target. Hours also fluctuate based on sales volume and seasonality.

Floating Literacy Advisor (Full Time) – Brooklyn Public Library
 
The Floating Literacy Advisor at Pacific Literacy Office will provide direct instruction, support for volunteers and instructional staff, academic advisement, career coaching, and case management services to motivate students from all reading levels to promote self-efficacy and life-long learning. The Floating Literacy Advisor will also organize, develop, and facilitate instructional programming and workplace development activities that integrate learning platforms and educational technologies to engage students in person and remotely.
 
The Floating Literacy Advisor will facilitate student transitions from lower level to higher education maintaining accurate referral information and coordinating services with adult education providers, workforce systems, and job training programs among others. The Floating Literacy Advisor will collaborate and step in when needed to cover at one of the Adult Learning Centers to help students overcome any barriers preventing them from participating or achieving their goals. The Floating Literacy Advisor will work collaboratively with the ALC literacy advisors, office associates and supervise/provide guidance to all program assistants to ensure the success of Adult Learning Center programming and other programs within the department.
 
The Floating Literacy Advisor will be second-in-charge of the Adult Learning Center when needed and works closely with all ALC Literacy Advisors and assist with interviews, onboarding and training new program instructional staff within the ALP department. This position will act as an educational resource to the other BPL Adult Learning program staff in the delivery of adult basic education programming. This position reports to the Manager of Operations.
