RiseBoro is redefining New York City for New Yorkers. Since 1973, we've offered services designed to support every generation and meet the needs of communities. Our programs span across housing, senior services, health care, youth development, education, empowerment, community development, arts programming, skills training, homelessness prevention and access to healthy food. 
 
We are currently recruiting for a ESOL Instructor. This position is part-time, 12 hours/week, and the hourly rate is $38.00/hour. ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Provide instruction to students enrolled in English for Speakers of Other Language (ESOL) classes;
  • Prepare weekly lesson plans that incorporate the use of computer-based activities and submit to Program Coordinator at the end of each month;  
  • Maintain students’ portfolios;
  • Administer assessments regularly to all students to track their progress;
  • Assign student’s interactive assignments using online resources;
  • Meet with Program Director / Program Coordinator on a monthly to discuss participants’ progress;
  • Refer participants internally for support services as needed and follow-up to ensure services are being offered;
  • Attend a minimum of 14 hours of trainings/workshops (off-site at the Regional Adult Education Network (RAEN) or on-site using computer-based webinars);
  • Attend staff development meetings on a monthly basis to receive assistance with computer-based lessons plans, computer based activities for classroom usage, utilizing laptops and smart-boards in the classroom;
  • Other related duties as assigned.
COMPETENCIES
  • Two years teaching experience preferred.  
  • Must be available during weekday evening hours.
  • Experience with curriculum development and lesson planning.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Must be able to create an engaging and welcoming learning environment.
  • Willing to go above and beyond program mandates for the benefit of the students
  • Ability to understand the concepts of institutional and structural racism and bias and their impact on underserved and underrepresented communities
  • Have a demonstrated commitment to supporting communities who have experienced systemic oppression and bias (e.g. people of color, LGBTQ+ people, immigrants, justice involved persons, etc.) 
EDUCATION EXPERIENCE
Must possess a Bachelor’s degree in related field; license to teach with the NYC Department of Education preferred

SUNY Queens EOC (administered by York College, CUNY) seeks three part-time adjunct lecturers for HSE Math, Science, and Social Studies to work remotely and eventually in person at its Jamaica location.  The Center serves an adult, diverse, multi-ethnic population of students.
Qualifications:
  • Bachelor’s degree required or Master’s degree preferred;
  • Knowledge of high school equivalency curriculum and TASC testing requirements;
  • Proficiency in remote learning instruction. Knowledge of Google Classroom and Zoom proficiency a plus; and
  • Experience working with adult learners and recognizing various learning styles.
 
Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Conduct courses online;
  • Establish clear goals and expectations;
  • Develop lesson plans and maintain a cooperative learning environment;

Jewish Community Council of Greater Coney Island seeks a full-time Case Manager for our Adult Literacy program
Case Manager - Career Counselor, Adult Literacy (ESOL)
The Case Manager - Career Counselor will be responsible for addressing the students’ barriers affecting their ability to benefit from ESOL classes, working through employment barriers, assisting students with achieving and retaining employment, both through in-person and virtual involvement.

This position entails working closely with Students, Instructors, Lead Teacher, Program Coordinators/Data Managers, and Program Director to ensure the success of the program

This position includes (but is not limited to) the following responsibilities:
  • Assist in outreach to identify appropriate program sites (and continue to support those partnerships) and program participants who are eligible, motivated and employment bound.
  • Assist with intake, including completing the necessary paperwork with each student.
  • Administer BEST Plus 2.0 testing (or any other assessment, as required by the funder).
  • Interview students at time of initial assessment to determine any barriers that students face from fully benefitting from the program, and assist them in overcoming those barriers by facilitating internal and external referrals.  (Barriers may include, child care, housing, transportation, mental illness etc.)
  • For the duration of the ESL training, schedule meetings with each student on a bi-monthly basis.
  • Monitor students’ development throughout their training and the pre and post-employment period, utilizing the necessary documents required by the funding source / Program Director.
  • Offer career counseling to help students make appropriate career choices. Share the latest job market information and help them identify the types of jobs that are suitable based on their work experience, skills, and English levels. For those employed, encourage job retention and advancement.
  • Assist students with resume preparation.
  • Actively research and create awareness for benefits and resources available to the NY immigrant population (ex: healthcare, vocational training, HSE opportunities, etc.).
  • Conduct individual and group employment-related workshops such as resume preparation, interviewing skills, confidence building, cultural differences in the American workplace, employer-employee relationships, and job retention skills, etc. Conduct orientation and student enrollment in job portals per funder requirements.
  • Establish and maintain employer relationships, develop job bank, and place students in jobs based on program requirements.
  • Maintain accurate case management/employment records, including following students’ employment as per program requirements.
  • Participate in meetings and workshops held at the funding sources when deemed necessary or when helpful to the program, participate in the required staff development workshops, and participate in internal staff meetings.

Qualifications: Bachelors Degree; culturally sensitive professional individual with good word processing skills; excellent written, communicative and interpersonal skills; accurate data-entry and typing skills; prior career counseling and workforce development experience preferred;  prior experience in the ESOL field preferred, Bi-lingual English-Spanish or Mandarin strongly preferred; good references.

Supervision: The Case Manager – Career Counselor will be supervised by the Program Director of Adult Literacy.

Work Schedule: 35 hours per week. Must be available to work day time and evening hours.

Work Environment: Work will be performed mainly at JCCGCI offices, and includes extensive travel to ESL sites throughout the five boroughs (driving capability preferred).  

Language Skills: Ability to read and speak English; Mathematical Skills. Bi-lingual English-Spanish or Mandarin preferred. 

Computer Skills: Proficiency in Microsoft Word and Excel, and data entry; basic knowledge of computer networking processes; ability to work remotely, as needed (prior experience and effectiveness using Zoom)

Physical Demands:  Ability to lift 15 pounds

Reasoning Ability: Ability to make determinations of best procedures and practices to attain goals of the position.

Working Conditions:  Occasionally called upon to work over schedule or odd schedules (e.g. when outreach is best accomplished after-hours or on weekends).

Duties
  • Conduct in person and Academic instruction in all subject areas (with a focus on ELA) to young adult participants 17-24 years of age enrolled in a workforce development program located in the Bronx, NY.
  • Creating a classroom environment that is conducive to learning; inclusive of all different learning styles and addresses varied group dynamics. Lesson delivery that is engaging, energetic and promotes student retention. Reinforce program policies and procedures to maintain a healthy and safe learning environment. Ability to develop and implement both synchronous and asynchronous activities for students both in person and remote.
  • Meet student retention goals. Providing opportunities to acknowledge student achievement. Follow up on absent students.
  • Apply technology and various teaching strategies to enhance the learning experience of students.
  • Provide assessments and reports as necessary and provide individual feedback to students to ensure their success. 
  • TABE pre/post testing and TASC assessment testing
  • TASC test scheduling for students ready for TASC exam
  • Participate in regular staff and program planning meetings
  • Disseminate program information as appropriate; provide outreach and training to potential candidates about MMCC services
  • Maintain necessary documentation records for program evaluation and audit purposes
  • Attend mandatory professional development training and meetings for purposes of learning best practices and current trends in adult learning

Qualifications:

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Pre-Test and Post-Test students using BEST Plus 2.0                                       
  • Places students according to English Proficiency Level          
  • Assists students in filling out enrolment forms        
  • Enters information in ASISTS and DYCD Connect data bases on a regular basis        
  • Enters data on Google docs on a daily basis
  • Checks data base for accuracy and consistency on a bi-weekly basis
  • Attends BEST Plus 2.0 refresher workshops or recertification workshops
  • Provides information about the program to potential students and organizations
  • Assists with registration and outreach for the program
  • Contacts students who stop coming for more than two sessions
  • Creates folders for all enrolled students and verifies that folders contain all required forms and verifies that the information is written correctly on the forms.
  • Ensures that each student who has achieved the bench mark hours have a portfolio.
  • Provides teachers with programmatic support like: placing students in different levels or schedules upon conferencing with the teacher.  Provides teachers/instructors with teaching materials like markers, erasers, pencils, calculators, etc.
  • Other duties as required by the program
Qualifications:
  • To perform this job successfully, an individual must be BEST Plus 2.0 certified and have a working knowledge of ASISTS Data Base and DYCD Connect. Candidates must be flexible and willing to learn programs procedures quickly. Candidates must be able to work independently, have good communication skills, and must be proficient in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel), Google Docs.
  • Education and/or Experience required:
  • High School Diploma Required, Associates Degree preferred and at least one year of experience working with ASISTS and administering BEST PLUS 2.0
Language Skills:  Candidate must be Bilingual in English-Spanish to be able to interact with students in both languages. This is a plus but not mandatory.
