Pre-HSE Instructor, Opportunity Youth Programs– Full Time
Department Overview: Commonpoint Queens (Samuel Field YM&YWHA) Adult Workforce Department is comprised of employment and support programs serving individuals predominantly adults 18 and over and opportunity youth ages 16-24. The department provides access to occupational training, education, resources, and support programs for individuals who are motivated to enter the workforce.

Position Details: Commonpoint Queens is seeking to hire an Pre-HSE Instructor for the Advance & Earn Program. The goal of the Advance & Earn Program is to provide a career pathway for opportunity youth through a continuum of services including literacy and math instruction, HSE test preparation, work readiness training, college and career exploration, paid work experience, advanced occupational training and industry credential attainment. The program supports opportunity youth at any educational level, providing on-ramps at various levels through three program components, each supported by case management and wrap-around services. Under the supervision of the Director of Education, the Pre-HSE Instructor will provide contextualized instruction in literacy and math to an opportunity youth population.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
The Pre-HSE Instructor will:
  • Develop lesson plans and adjust instruction according to the various learning styles of program participants. Maintain a collaborative learning environment.
  • Develop college and career exploration curriculum.
  • Create engaging lessons in ABE and Pre-HSE that develop student critical thinking and problem solving skills using a variety of methodologies.
  • Facilitate basic skills instruction in literacy and mathematics.

  • Provide necessary accommodations and modifications for growth and success of all students.

  • Administer and utilize standardized assessments to develop curricula targeting the educational challenges of the students.
  • Monitor students’ performance and attendance for required reporting systems.
  • Lead engagement and follow-up efforts to ensure participants progress towards positive outcomes.
  • Implement strategies to maximize student learning and retention.

EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE, AND REQUIRED COMPETENCIES
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Education required. Master’s Degree in Education preferred.
  • Minimum of three years of experience teaching young adult learners of varied ages, levels, and diverse cultural backgrounds.
  • Knowledge of ABE, pre-HSE and/or HSE curriculum, testing procedures and requirements.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

Classroom Facilitation
  • Develop and deliver daily lesson plans and educational activities for students on math and science tops for ABE/HSE student in participating both in-person and simultaneous remote instruction - - approximately 3 months per cohort at 15 hours per week.
  • Adjust instruction according to the various learning styles of program participants, while maintain a safe and collaborative learning environment. Specifically, provide necessary accommodations and modifications for growth and success of all students.
  • Instruct in the program in a manner that supports student retention and daily attendance consistent while assisting students in meeting their education goals.  These duties will include the following:
    • Select, score, and interpret TABE exam
    • Deliver appropriate HSE instruction
    • Responsible for maintaining 75% average daily attendance
    • Consult with other staff to develop and maintain the student’s educational and employment plan.
    • Report attendance, test scores, and outcomes on a regular basis
  • Work with the Director of Student Experience to integrate technology into class work.  Specifically, actively maintain a digital classroom using either Google Classroom or a similar program to upload class recordings and assign/provide feedback on class and homework within a timely manner.
  • Initiate and participate in case conferencing as needed.

Managing Student Performance 
  • Provide students with ongoing feedback, conferencing, and performance appraisals.  Recognize any challenges early and work with the team and students to overcome them.
  • Prepare student evaluations individually and in conjunction with the rest of the program team, consisting of Vocational Rehabilitation & Youth Counselor and Youth Employment Specialist.
  • Administer the Test of Adult Basic Education exam and track results (training will be provided).
  • Continually assess student progress toward mastery of standards and keep students and the Director of Student Experience well informed of student progress by collecting and tracking data, providing daily feedback and weekly assessments.
  • Monitor students’ performance and attendance for required reporting systems.
 
Administrative
  • Participate in required team meetings and professional development sessions.
  • Prepare progress notes and other program monitoring reports.
  • Complete and submit weekly lesson logs and bimonthly student case notes.
  • Maintain attendance records, ensure accuracy of completion, and submit them in a timely manner.
  • Provide information on testing centers

EDUCATION, CERTIFICATE/LICENSE REQUIREMENTS: 
  • Bachelor’s degree required; Master’s degree in Education preferred.

Queens Public Library / Long Island City Adult Learning Center 
Position Title:   Part-Time ESOL/ABE/Pre-HSE/HSE Teachers
Hiring Wage:  $38-S40 per/hour 

SUMMARY:
These part-time positions will provide instruction to our ESOL/ABE/Pre-HSE/HSE students at Queens Public Library’s (QPL) Long Island City / Adult Learning Center (LIC/ALC). The teacher will also provide educational guidance to students to ensure the quality of instruction, effective programming, and adequate documentation towards positive educational gain, per government and private foundation contractual requirements. Duties will include assisting in all aspects of lesson planning and teaching the above classes/students utilizing QPL’s Community Learning Program (CLP)-approved curricula and prescribed teaching methodology, including answering student inquiries and providing them instructional support. Also, including assisting LIC/ALC staff and volunteers during registration, pre-and post-testing, and data collection as it relates to class attendance and students’ educational goals & outcomes, as well as helping to track inventory including textbooks, BEST Plus & BEST Literacy test materials. Lastly, duties will include working with Lead Instructors to review and revise curricula and lesson plans prior to each semester, attending internal staff development training/meetings, and external conferences/training, as necessary.  Perform other duties as required.
 
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Applies content knowledge and expertise in teaching to drive participant progress and outcomes.
  • Designs and implements lesson plans that ensure students make measurable skills gains.
  • Administers BEST Plus, Best Literacy, TABE, TASC Readiness, and other applicable testing instruments to assess participants’ measurable skills gains.
  • Refines lessons learned from professional development workshops to develop recommendations for students.
  • Collaborates with the administration to create lesson plans/curricula that allow for flexibility and encourage experimentation/innovation and digital literacy within the overall structure.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Education required. Evidence of mastery and application of adult education principles required.

Pre-HSE Instructor – Part-Time Evenings (Brooklyn, NY)
Opportunities for a Better Tomorrow is seeking a part-time Pre-HSE Instructor for adult learners for our 280 Wyckoff Avenue location.  The schedule is Monday through Thursday, from 6:00 p.m.-8:30 p.m. to start immediately.  Interested candidates should be available to teach for the entire length of each 16-week class cycle.

Program Description:
Phipps Neighborhoods Young Adult Literacy Program offers transformational programming for young people that provides opportunities to get their lives back on track, obtain an education, develop career readiness and fulfill their potential.  These programs provide educational advancement, job training, internships, mentoring, and computer skills training, located in three Bronx libraries.. Program services are available to young people between the ages of 16-24 who have had literacy or other educational challenges. 
 
Position Summary:
Instructors will teach math and literacy at one of the library sites. Instructors will also engage students in a Service Learning Project as well as teach an hour of job readiness per week.   
 
Duties and Responsibilities:
Instructors:
  • Create engaging instructional strategies and lesson plans in accordance with standards and best practices.
  • Provide instruction in math and/or literacy for pre-HSE students, including large and small group instruction as well as one-on-one tutoring.
  • Evaluate student progress using standardized assessment tools and administer pre-and post-tests according to schedule.
  • Integrate technology into instructional strategies.
  • Adapt teaching style and strategies to maximize student learning and retention.
  • Monitor attendance and student progress using online database.
  • Distribute and record metrocards to the students based on attendance.
  • Assist with Outreach and Recruitment
 
Qualifications:  
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Education or a related field.
  • Minimum of three years of experience teaching young adult learners, and experience with disconnected youth who have been court-involved, educationally challenged and/or with learning disabilities, substance abuse issues, etc.  
  • Highly skilled in Social Emotional Learning and Youth Development Principals.
  • Strong background in teaching reading and writing and/or math.
  • Experience working with students of varied ages, levels, and diverse cultural backgrounds.
  • Knowledge of ABE, pre-HSE, and/or HSE curriculum, testing procedures, and requirements.
  • Strong background in youth development and an assets-driven perspective on how to work with disconnected youth.
  • Excited about the opportunity to work in an environment dedicated to the development and growth of youth.
  • Ability to integrate technology into the curriculum.
  • Experience leading and/or participating in Service Learning preferred.
  • Proficient in basic computer applications (Outlook, Word, Power Point)
  • Strong interpersonal, oral and written communication skills.
  • Flexibility, adaptability and ability to work in a changing environment.
  • Establish and maintain cooperative and effective working relationships with others.
  • Enthusiasm, creativity and initiative
