Under the supervision of the Director of the Adult Education Pre-College Programs, the Spanish Pre-HSE Instructor will provide basic education instruction (pre-high school equivalency preparation) in Spanish at LaGuardia Community College for students with low reading and math skills, who are not eligible for the HSE class. Classes are offered on Mondays (remote), Tuesdays (in person), and Thursdays (in person) from 6pm-9pm, beginning September 2025.

All instruction will be conducted in Spanish.
Responsibilities include:

Create a student-centered, engaging learning environment,
Develop theme-based, contextualized lessons using both synchronous and asynchronous instruction in all subject areas (math, science, reading, writing & social studies) with lessons in basic level reading, writing and math
Assess student content knowledge and tailor instruction relevant to GED preparation.
Evaluate student progress and provide feedback, both formally and informally
Prepare students to move to the next level HSE class.
Administer required assessments, such as GED Ready exams.
Maintain attendance records and work collaboratively with the office staff and case managers on student participation and needs.
Participate in professional development and attend staff meetings.

Qualifications:

BA or BS in education or related field
Minimum two years related teaching experience
Fluent in Spanish
Knowledge of GED exam and subject area content in Spanish
Experience teaching online classes
Ability to create thematic, content-based curricula
Proficient at integrating technology into lessons
Excellent interpersonal, writing, and oral communication skills

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Informs instructors of current issues related to New York State Education Department’s (NYSED) adult literacy programming.

Collaborates in reviewing, editing and revising curricula as needed.
Manages online communications and online support with participating teachers.
Establishes a clear pedagogy and set of goals/outcomes that guide the entire instructional staff.
Develops curriculum sequences for ESOL, ABE, and pre-HSE resulting in coherent and well-articulated progression across NRS educational levels.
Outlines framework for teachers to informally assess themselves and their participants during the process of achieving program outcomes and objectives.
Collaborates with faculty and administration to create curricula that allows for flexibility and encourages experimentation/innovation and digital literacy within overall structure.
Incorporates interdisciplinary approaches within the curricula when appropriate.
Provides direction for procurement of material, training, and fiscal resources to implement curricula.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

Bachelor’s Degree in Education or related field required. Minimum of four years of experience in adult education required. Evidence of mastery and application of adult education principles required.
At least one year of experience supervising, training and/or providing professional development to teaching staff required.
At least one year of experience with both independent and collaborative curriculum development required.
Experience with integrating technology into classroom instruction and for supplemental learning outside of a classroom setting required.
Must have knowledge of existing academic standards at the high school and college levels in New York State (e.g. NYS Common Core Learning Standards, college placement exams, etc.).
Strong facilitation, training, and professional development skills required.

Create engaging lessons in HSE that develop student critical thinking and problem solving skills using a variety of methodologies.
Continually assess student progress toward mastery of standards and keep students and staff well informed of student progress by collecting and tracking data, providing daily feedback and weekly assessments.
Provide necessary accommodations and modifications for growth and success of all students.
Administer and utilize standardized assessments to develop curricula targeting the educational challenges of the students.
Monitor students’ performance and attendance for required reporting systems.
Lead engagement and follow-up efforts to ensure participants progress towards positive outcomes.

EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE, AND REQUIRED COMPETENCIES

Bachelor’s Degree in Education required. Master’s Degree in Education preferred.
Minimum of three years of experience teaching young adult learners of varied ages, levels, and diverse cultural backgrounds.
Knowledge of ABE and HSE curriculum, testing procedures and requirements.
Demonstrated ability in youth development.

The Adult Learning Center at CUNY NYC College of Technology is seeking dynamic Spanish HSE and pre-HSE teachers for Saturday classes (9 AM - 3 PM) in downtown Brooklyn. Classes scheduled to start in September

Teacher candidates must be able to teach all subjects, demonstrate experience developing interdisciplinary HSE curricula, have a strong background in math and writing and be creative, organized, and committed to learner-centered, participatory education. In addition, teachers will also be responsible for curriculum development, instruction, assessment and record keeping.

Teachers are required to attend professional development meetings and work collaboratively with case management, administrative, and teaching staff.

Requirements:
BA, 2 yrs. experience teaching HSE, and knowledge of the TASC exam required.

Part-Time Pre-HSE Instructor
BPL is seeking a Pre-HSE instructor to teach intermediate level adult basic education classes. Instructor will teach reading, writing and math to adults using curriculum developed by BPL and including CCSS in a technology rich learning environment.

Responsibilities

Prepare syllabus that uses library collections and curriculum
Engage students in a rich and engaging learning environment
Utilize BPL Pre-HSE curriculum for reading, writing and math
Implement vocabulary, fluency and comprehension strategy instruction
Administer mandated assessment and conference individually with students
Submit attendance and documentation of student progress as required
Participate in regular staff meetings for curriculum and staff development

Qualifications

BA/BS required. MA in education a plus
Demonstrated ability to work with struggling learners and motivate/encourage them to persist towards their goals
