Schedule: Saturdays, 9am-3pm

The Adult Learning Center at CUNY NYC College of Technology is seeking dynamic Spanish HSE and pre-HSE teachers for Saturday classes (9 AM - 3 PM) in downtown Brooklyn. Classes scheduled to start in September

Teacher candidates must be able to teach all subjects, demonstrate experience developing interdisciplinary HSE curricula, have a strong background in math and writing and be creative, organized, and committed to learner-centered, participatory education. In addition, teachers will also be responsible for curriculum development, instruction, assessment and record keeping.

Teachers are required to attend professional development meetings and work collaboratively with case management, administrative, and teaching staff. 
 
Requirements:
BA, 2 yrs. experience teaching HSE, and knowledge of the TASC exam required. 
MA + experience with theme-based instruction pref.

Part-Time Pre-HSE Instructor
BPL is seeking a Pre-HSE instructor to teach intermediate level adult basic education classes. Instructor will teach reading, writing and math to adults using curriculum developed by BPL and including CCSS in a technology rich learning environment.
 
Responsibilities
  • Prepare syllabus that uses library collections and curriculum
  • Engage students in a rich and engaging learning environment
  • Utilize BPL Pre-HSE curriculum for reading, writing and math
  • Implement vocabulary, fluency and comprehension strategy instruction
  • Administer mandated assessment and conference individually with students
  • Submit attendance and documentation of student progress as required
  • Participate in regular staff meetings for curriculum and staff development
Qualifications
  • BA/BS required. MA in education a plus

Pre-HSE Instructor – Part-Time Evenings (Brooklyn, NY)
Opportunities for a Better Tomorrow is seeking a part-time Pre-HSE Instructor for adult learners for our 280 Wyckoff Avenue location.  The schedule is Monday through Thursday, from 6:00 p.m.-8:30 p.m. to start immediately.  Interested candidates should be available to teach for the entire length of each 16-week class cycle.

The Pre-HSE Instructor should be able to provide math and literacy instruction to a varied age-range adult population; must be knowledgeable of the Common Core at Pre-HSE level, and be able to administer and utilize standardized assessments to develop curricula targeting the educational challenges of students.  Instructor will design lesson plans and adjust instructions according to the different learning styles and will maintain collaborative learning environments.  The instructor must monitor students’ performance and attendance for required reporting systems and should also be discreet when handling student’s confidential information.

Program Description:
Phipps Neighborhoods Young Adult Literacy Program offers transformational programming for young people that provides opportunities to get their lives back on track, obtain an education, develop career readiness and fulfill their potential.  These programs provide educational advancement, job training, internships, mentoring, and computer skills training, located in three Bronx libraries.. Program services are available to young people between the ages of 16-24 who have had literacy or other educational challenges. 
 
Position Summary:
Instructors will teach math and literacy at one of the library sites. Instructors will also engage students in a Service Learning Project as well as teach an hour of job readiness per week.   
 
Duties and Responsibilities:
Instructors:
  • Create engaging instructional strategies and lesson plans in accordance with standards and best practices.
  • Provide instruction in math and/or literacy for pre-HSE students, including large and small group instruction as well as one-on-one tutoring.
  • Evaluate student progress using standardized assessment tools and administer pre-and post-tests according to schedule.
  • Integrate technology into instructional strategies.
  • Adapt teaching style and strategies to maximize student learning and retention.
  • Monitor attendance and student progress using online database.
  • Distribute and record metrocards to the students based on attendance.
  • Assist with Outreach and Recruitment
 
Qualifications:  
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Education or a related field.
  • Minimum of three years of experience teaching young adult learners, and experience with disconnected youth who have been court-involved, educationally challenged and/or with learning disabilities, substance abuse issues, etc.  
  • Highly skilled in Social Emotional Learning and Youth Development Principals.
  • Strong background in teaching reading and writing and/or math.
  • Experience working with students of varied ages, levels, and diverse cultural backgrounds.
  • Knowledge of ABE, pre-HSE, and/or HSE curriculum, testing procedures, and requirements.
  • Strong background in youth development and an assets-driven perspective on how to work with disconnected youth.
  • Excited about the opportunity to work in an environment dedicated to the development and growth of youth.
  • Ability to integrate technology into the curriculum.
  • Experience leading and/or participating in Service Learning preferred.

Friends of Island Academy (Friends) was founded in 1990 to anchor, support and develop capacity among young people newly released from jail in New York City. Friends is seeking an instructor to teach a pre-HSE class at its Harlem site, lead assessment activities, and support the larger goals of the newly-funded Youth Reentry Network. The class will start in January.
Essential Responsibilities:
  • Teach HSE class for 17-24 year olds who have had criminal justice involvement
  • Provide instruction in Social Studies, Science, English Language Arts, Math, and Writing. 
  • Develop learner-centered, participatory lessons, using relevant materials and a project-based approach. 
  • Create engaging instructional strategies and lesson plans in both math and/or literacy, including group instruction and one-on-one tutoring.
  • Evaluate student progress using standardized assessment tools and in-class assessment.
  • Maintain attendance and assessment data in Friends’ agency-wide database; enter regular notes on student progress.
Qualifications Required
  • Three-five years’ experience teaching in adult literacy/HSE education;
  • Experience working with at-risk youth or justice involved youth;
  • Strong interpersonal skills, cultural competence, and an understanding and belief in strengths-based youth development philosophy are needed to succeed in this position.

Essential Responsibilities:
  • Teach HSE class for 17-24 year olds who have had criminal justice involvement

  • Support students’ development as readers and writers; teach reading strategies and provide regular, meaningful writing activities
  • Develop learner-centered, participatory lessons, using relevant materials and a project-based approach.

Lead assessment activities for Friends Jail-to-School Pipeline program
  • Conduct assessments for prospective students – including TABE tests, and informal reading inventories when appropriate;
  • Using TABE scores, informal assessments, school transcripts, and educational history, help prospective students consider their educational options (i.e., regular diploma track, HSE track, etc.)
Support other Pipeline initiatives
  • Help plan and participate in student orientations;
  • Make referrals to other programs as appropriate;
  • Meet with parents, Probation Officers, and other referring agencies
  • Participate with the rest of the Education team in program planning and evaluation
Qualifications Required
  • Three-five years’ experience teaching in adult literacy/HSE education;

​Certified ABE/Pre-HSE & HSE Instructors (P/T) needed to work with Youth (ages 17-24)  in the Bronx and Harlem, NY 

SoBro is seeking dynamic part-time instructors for our ABE and Pre-HSE classes to work with a diverse group of young adult learners ages 17 – 24. The position begins in October 2016; starting salary range is $30 - $40/hr. Classes are generally held in the mornings.
Essential Duties Include:                                                                              
  • Providing high-quality theme-based instruction to help students achieve either educational gains or prepare for the TASC exam in all five (5) competency areas. 
  • Designing engaging lessons to help students foster a desire for learning 
  • Collaborate with staff and teachers to develop best teaching practices and engaging materials
  • Review, communicating and document class progress with both staff and students
  • Actively partake in department meetings and professional development
  • Maintain class attendance and communicating with students about program participation issues
  • Conduct required assessments including TABE and TASC Readiness exams
Education Requirements:
Candidate must have Bachelor's degree and relevant teaching and education experience. A Master’s Degree a plus.
