Pre HSE Instructor P/T

Brooklyn Public Library is seeking a Pre-HSE instructor to teach intermediate level adult basic education classes. Instructor will teach reading, writing and math to adults using curriculum developed by BPL and including CCSS.

Responsibilities: Prepare syllabus that uses library collections and curriculum, Engage students in a rich learning environment; Administer mandated assessment and conference individually with students: Submit attendance and documentation of student progress as required; Participate in regular staff meetings for curriculum and staff development

Requirements: BA/BS required. MA in education a plus; Proven effectiveness with struggling learners; Strong organizational skills required; 6 hours/week +1 hours for prep and administrative work. Classes are evening & Saturday. Salary: $38 per hour.

The ESOL Teacher is a part-time position to assist speakers of other languages in improving their English skills.  Lessons should have a focus on communication, but also include practice in all skills areas – speaking, listening, reading, and writing. For more information about Mercy Center, please visit http://www.mercycenterbronx.org.

Responsibilities:
  • Teach a beginner level ESOL class according the schedule of class days and times.
  • Prepare and make copies of instructional materials.
  • Collaborate with Adult Education Program Manager and Curriculum Manager to ensure lesson plans follow the outlined curriculum. 
  • Take daily attendance and maintain minimum student attendance as outlined by funding agencies.
  • Attend monthly professional development and administrative meetings 
  • Maintain communication with Adult Education Administrative staff about stuent progress, class details, etc.
Qualifications:
  • Bachelor’s Degree and TEFL certification.
  • At minimum two years’ experience teaching ESL to adult populations.
  • Experience working with adults and immigrants.
  • Excellent communication, organizational, and written skills.
  • Ability to problem solve and multi-task in a fast-paced environment.  

ESOL Program Specialist F/T

​The ESOL Program Specialist will provide extensive quality professional support to the Queens Library’s NAP/ESOL Program. Duties will include:
  • Assisting in all aspects of guiding and running the ESOL Program smoothly and effectively including scheduling of classes and teachers, registration, testing, data collection, and curriculum development, preparing class schedules for approximately 100 ESOL classes a year, coordinating teacher assignments, scheduling staff development meetings, assisting in ESOL registrations at various library locations, monitoring the preparation of registration packets, collecting data and entering it into the appropriate data management system (ASISTS/LAMPS), monitoring lesson planning and class attendance, tracking ESOL inventory including textbooks, BEST Plus and TABE tests, answering teacher and student inquiries. 
  • Assisting with the preparation and revision of the ESOL curriculum and lesson plans prior to each semester, testing students using the BEST Plus Oral Proficiency test, participating in site visits, and teaching classes when necessary. Attend staff development meetings, BEST Plus refreshers, and ESOL conferences as necessary. Performs other duties as required.
  • Responsible for assisting with the evaluation and management of ESOL programming and help provide direction for current adult learning programs and assist with maintaining and/or enhancing enrollment number and retention rates. Ensures programming quality based on enrollment/retention via coordinating internal and external audits and conducts community outreach, community needs assessments as well as address and resolve all issues to ensure overall positive participant satisfaction. Strict adherence to program standards/SOP, case and file management guidelines.
  • Helps to oversee the day-to-day operations of the program and develops and provides centralized standard operational guidance to program staff/volunteers. Oversees the policies and procedures for the program and coordinate operations with community library staff as needed. Performs site visits to various program sites and classes. Represents Queens Library at meetings of NYC, NYS, Federal and international literacy providers at conferences, interagency meetings and is responsible for maintaining effective programmatic partnerships.
  • Helps to manage the collection and distribution of program operations statistical data for reporting purposes, including adherence to program standards and government contract reporting.

QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Bachelor’s Degree and three years in ESOL/adult education setting are required.
  • In depth knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite required.
  • Experience handling large volumes of data and working with data management systems preferred.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills required.
  • Must be detail oriented, flexible and a self-starter. Must be able to work in a fast-paced environment. 
  • Strong customer service skills required.
  • BEST Plus certification is preferred.
  • Knowledge of National Reporting System is a plus.

Outreach and Recruitment Coordinator (part-time)
Anticipated Start Date: January 2016

Literacy Partners (www.literacypartners.org) is seeking an Outreach and Recruitment Coordinator to recruit adult learners for testing, assessment, and enrollment in High School Equivalency (HSE) classes on Staten Island. Working collaboratively with Head Start, UPK, and other early childhood education programs, we serve low-income and immigrant parents of young children who are building their English language, literacy and numeracy skills.

The Outreach and Recruitment Coordinator would be responsible for:
  • Coordinating outreach and recruitment efforts on Staten Island
  • Organizing informational presentations at area locations
  • Collecting and compiling accurate outreach and recruitment data
  • Responding to any questions or related inquiries regarding the program
  • Following up with referrals and other student-related matters
  • Identifying potential outreach and recruitment events and partners
  • Attending and participating in outreach and recruitment events
  • With the Director of Programs, devising and implementing an outreach and recruitment strategy
  • With the Data Manager, track outreach results as well as monitoring and maintaining student recruitment data
  • Performing other duties as assigned

The Outreach and Recruitment Coordinator should have these qualifications:
  • Bachelor’s Degree required
  • Experience in adult literacy services and/or with diverse populations in low-income neighborhoods
  • Strong interpersonal, communication and presentation skills
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team
  • Able to track data accurately, completely and thoroughly
  • Bilingual (Spanish/English) preferred

Adult ESOL Instructor

Riis Settlement seeks an experienced, creative, hard-working and dynamic ESOL instructor to work 9 hours per week in the evenings (Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, 6:00 p.m.-9:00 p.m.). Successful candidates will have experience creating student-centered learning environments, using a communicative approach, and incorporating civic engagement, job readiness and technology in the classroom. The ESOL Instructor will work within the Immigrant Services Program to provide limited English proficient adults with contextualized instruction that gives students the civic and English language skills to effectively participate in the English-speaking environment in which they live. The instructor fosters a classroom environment that offers participants the resources, opportunities and support needed to help them grow and achieve self-sufficiency.

Primary Job Responsibilities:
  • Participant Interaction
  • Provide contextualized, content-based English language instruction at beginning, intermediate and/or advanced levels. Provide authentic language tasks, interactive activities, and opportunities to practice speaking and writing for fluency.
  • Design and implement engaging lesson plans that incorporate best practices in TESOL and adult education and assist students in meeting the curriculum standards for appropriate NRS level through a variety of instructional methods adapted to diverse learning styles.
  • Incorporate civic engagement into ESOL classroom instruction.
  • Design and administer student assessment tools that gauge student learning and monitor achievement of performance outcomes.
  • Create a welcoming environment that fosters community and learning among program participants.
  • Administrative Functions
  • Submit bi-weekly unit plans that address material to be covered in class.
  • Assist with registration and pre- and post-testing as needed (training will be provided if not certified to administer BEST Plus).
  • Attend staff development activities and monthly program meetings.
  • Assist with reporting requirements as needed, including student goal-setting and outcome assessment.

Statement of Skills, Knowledge & Abilities:
  • Bachelor’s Degree and 2+ years relevant teaching experience (Master’s in TESOL and/or Education preferred)
  • Ability to modify/adapt existing lesson plans and curricula to fit program needs, and/or create original lesson plans
  • Thorough, detailed knowledge and understanding of English grammar with the ability to clearly explain all verbs, tenses and parts of speech.
  • Ability to interact with diverse ethnic populations and empathize with people unfamiliar with local culture.
  • Ability to work both independently and collaboratively with team.
  • Advanced computer literacy and proficiency in Microsoft XP.
  • Ethical and professional conduct that facilitates the building of a respectful, trusting and collaborative relationship with program staff and students.

TASC Project Director F/T

BPI-TASC Project Director, Bard Prison Initiative (BPI)BPI-TASC aims to 1) provide innovative, academically-oriented TASC instruction to at-risk youth already participating in program activities at select community-based organizations in New York City and 2) prepare incarcerated and formerly incarcerated BPI students for careers in the field. TASC instruction will be enhanced by liberal arts programming and activities that are in keeping with Bard’s practices for more advanced students.
Responsibilities include leading administration and instruction of TASC programming in NYC; management of and cultivation of BPI TASC Fellow, an alumnus of BPI being trained to teach to the TASC exam; and, instruction of incarcerated BPI students on how to teach to the new exam.

QUALIFICATIONS
The candidate should have experience teaching high school equivalency or related material and be able to demonstrate ability to think innovatively in engaging “at-risk” youth, creating pathways to higher education, and inspiring students to commit to HS equivalency.

Mercy Center is a comprehensive community center that has been serving women and their families in the Mott Haven section of the South Bronx, NY for over 20 years. We address the needs of the whole person, developing skills for healthy family living and economic advancement and building a community of respect, hospitality and non-violence. Mercy Center provides a range of programs and services to our participants, most of whom are immigrants and almost two-thirds of whom survive on annual household incomes of less than $15,000.
Reports to Director of Adult Education and Workforce Development
Responsibilities:
  • Facilitate all instructional aspects of HSE class
  • Provide differentiated instruction to a wide-range of learners
  • Plan lessons and projects that are outcome based to develop skills necessary for both job readiness and HSE preparation
  • Demonstrate an understanding of and practice the principals of positive adult development
  • Administer multiple forms of assessment, including summative and formative assessments, and use these assessments to inform lesson planning and day to day instructional strategies
  • Collaborate with the instructional team to respond to the instructional needs of the individual students, to plan lessons, projects and student exhibitions
  • Maintain a classroom environment that is stimulating, supports individual and group learning and is rigorous and nurturing
  • Develop and maintain student portfolios, documenting milestone and other supporting interim achievements
  • Maintain accurate student records and all student contacts
  • Maintain case records pursuant to data-management procedures established for the program and as stipulated by contractual requirements
  • Collect and maintain documentation of services and outcomes for internal and external use
  • Complete any relevant responsibilities and functions as assigned by director
Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's Degree in Education or related field required, Master's preferred
  • Minimum of two years experience teaching HSE classes
  • Experience in curriculum design and implementation
