Overview: The Door is an unparalleled model for youth development, offering a comprehensive range of integrated services within a single site for nearly 11,000 New York City youth each year. Our mission is to empower young adults to reach their full potential by providing comprehensive youth development services in a diverse and caring environment. At The Door, youth can access health care and education, mental health counseling and crisis assistance, legal assistance, college preparation services, career development, housing supports, arts, sports and recreational activities, and nutritious meals – all for free and under one roof. By providing participants with our suite of integrated services, we seek to provide any motivated young person with the tools, resources, and opportunities needed to successfully transition to adulthood.

The goal of The Door’s Career and Education Services Department is to support young adults in completing secondary education and successfully transitioning into post-secondary education and employment. The Door’s EPOCH Program is designed to help young people who are out-of-school and out-of-work to assess, set, and obtain their educational and career goals. The EPOCH Program is seeking a part-time HSE (High School Equivalency) instructor to teach a HSE class for students, ages 17-24 years old, who are nearing test ready.   The goal of the class is to prepare students to take the HSE and score the highest score on the exam so that they will be prepared to enter college, advanced skills training workshops and/or employment.
 
Responsibilities:
  • Facilitate all instructional aspects of HSE class
  • Provide differentiated instruction to a wide range of learners
  • Plan lessons and projects that are outcome based to develop skills necessary for both job readiness and HSE preparation
  • Demonstrate an understanding of and practice the principles of positive youth development
  • Administer multiple forms of assessment, including summative and formative assessments, and use these assessments to inform lesson planning and day to day instructional strategies
  • Collaborate with the instructional team to respond to the instructional needs of the individual students, to plan lessons, projects, and student exhibitions
  • Maintain a classroom environment that is stimulating, supports individual and group learning and is rigorous and nurturing
  • Develop and maintain student portfolios, documenting milestone and other supporting interim achievements
  • Maintain accurate student records and all student contacts
  • Maintain case records pursuant to data-management procedures established for the program and as stipulated by contractual requirements
  • Collect and maintain documentation of services and outcomes for internal and external use
  • Complete any relevant responsibilities and functions as assigned by supervisor and/or director

Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's degree in education or related field required, Master’s preferred
  • Minimum of two years' experience teaching HSE classes
  • Previous experience in youth development
  • Demonstrated understanding and practice of the principles of positive youth development
  • Experience in curriculum design and implementation
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Demonstrated ability to motivate and challenge students to achieve a high level of performance through rigorous academic performance
Work Schedule: Part time, Monday-Thursday mornings, 15 hours per week (This temporary position will end three months from start date)

Key Responsibilities
  • Assess language levels and assist with evaluating member’s eligibility for the program
  • Using established curricula and lesson plans, provide contextualized instruction to 5 - 10 students
  • Provide support to supplement NYC Food Protection course
  • Document attendance and progress
  • Attend weekly meetings with program staff to review progress and participation

ESOL Instructor P/T

Adult English Language and Literacy (AELL) is the direct service provider of ESOL and adult literacy instruction for the New York Public Library.  They use professional teachers to offer free instruction to adult patrons in reading, writing, speaking and listening from a 0 to 8th grade level. Through formal classes in language and literacy, as well as elective offerings such as English conversation and citizenship preparation groups, AELL has taken on the charge to expand ESOL programming in the Library through both in-person and online instruction.

Key Responsibilities:

Working with the Associate Director and the Hub Manager, hourly instructors will:
  • Teach ESOL classes that promote English language proficiency for students assessed at NRS levels 1-6
  • Follow the prescribed curriculum in a communicative language  teaching environment during class-time.
  • Instruct adult ESOL students in classes and learning experiences which will lead to the achievement of their educational and personal goals.
  • Assist in the managed enrollment process to recruit and maintain students and student records
  • Maintain daily attendance records
  • Prepare weekly lesson plans for each session based on the curriculum.

Skills Knowledge & Expertise
  • Bachelor’s degree required, with training and/or experience in ESOL
  • Experience teaching adults both in-person and online
  • Strong interpersonal skills. Ability to work well with a variety of people, in a multicultural setting, involving a variety of team situations
  • Experience administering standardized assessments
  • Successfully demonstrated knowledge of technology-assisted learning, instructional software, video, audio and distance learning
  • Successfully demonstrated experience using Microsoft Office, Google Suite, and Zoom

We serve 500 students yearly with GED preparation classes, ESL classes, and vocational training. In addition, the Education Center operates a Family Welcome Center (FWC) in which we provide case management & wrap-around services, workforce development programming, and regular community workshops & events. Position Description:
The Education Center offers GED preparation classes to participants 17 years and older. Instruction is offered in reading & writing (integrating social studies), math, and science. The GED Coordinator oversees GED preparation programming, teaches GED preparation classes, supervises part-time GED instructional staff, conducts outreach & enrollment, and organizes pre and post testing schedules.

Qualifications Required:
  • Bachelor's degree in education, adult education, or equivalent; Masters degree preferred
  • Language skills in Spanish, Arabic, and/or Chinese are preferred
  • Three or more years teaching experience in an adult education setting
  • Very strong computer skills

Qualifications:
  • Bachelor’s degree required or Master’s degree preferred;
  • Currency with the GED Exam requirements;
  • In-person instruction two days a week during the 9:00 am to 1:15 pm; and
  • Experience working with adult learners and familiarity with various learning styles.

Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Conduct courses during day hours;
  • Establish clear goals and expectations;
  • Develop lesson plans and maintain a cooperative learning environment;
  • Monitor students’ performance and attendance for required reporting systems;
  • Keep students and administrators informed of student progress by sharing collected data; and
