Job Summary:
St. Nicks Alliance Workforce Development Center seeks (8) Part-Time ESOL Teachers to teach English to adult students in the Adult Education Program, in a way that is dynamic and contextualized for students’ practical use. These positions require very creative and dedicated ESOL instructors particularly experienced with adults to teach a range of ESOL Levels 1- 5. Summer positions begin July 9th 2018 and fall positions begin September 12th 2018.  Various schedules are available, including mornings, evenings and Saturdays. Part Time ESOL Teacher reports to the Adult Education Program Manager.
Responsibilities:
  • Manage a classroom of up to 15-20 adults over the age of 18+.
  • Help second language learners improve their English conversation skills through communicative language teaching approach.
  • Develop and deliver daily lesson plans/curriculum and educational activities for students in ESOL programming, which includes utilization of SED/CUNY CareerKit.
  • Monitor students’ educational progress and liaise with staff members provide feedback and establish education plans.
  • Administer assessments tests and track results.
  • Take and document student attendance for each session. 
  • Attend RAEN professional development and additional trainings, according to the city and state standards.
  • Demonstrate ability to perform multiple tasks effectively in a fast-paced environment.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office. 
  • Provide tutoring services to students
Qualifications:
  • The ideal candidate will have a Bachelor’s Degree in Education and minimum 3+ years experience teaching ESOL.
  • Very proficient English speakers with good working knowledge of English grammar and language use.
  • Experienced teachers with good interpersonal skills who enjoy working in diverse linguistic and cultural settings.
  • Passionate teachers looking to empower immigrant communities through English language education.
  • Excellent communication, organizational, verbal and written skills.
  • Experience with Best Plus 2.0 preferred. 
  • Experience with SED/CUNY CareerKit curriculum preferred.

The Brooklyn Public Library Adult Learning Program is seeking a part-time Literacy Zone (LZ) Case Manager for three of our Family Welcome Center locations (Eastern Parkway, Flatbush, and New Lots). The Case Manager will help ensure that our neighborhood residents and program participants are aware of our free programs that meet the needs of every member of a family.

Literacy Zones are a reform initiative developed by the New York State Board of Regents and the State Education Department to close the achievement gap in urban and rural communities.

SUMMARY OF POSITION: The Institute for Career Development (
ICD) is seeking a Building Maintenance Instructor to teach individuals with disabilities the skills needed for entry-level employment in the facilities-maintenance field.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Instruct students on an individual and group basis in specific subjects, skills or trades. (All lessons are approved by NYSED-BPSS) Assign classwork, demonstrate procedures and monitor and record progress.
  • Through explanation, demonstration, modeling and practice, acquaint students with work activities, proper work methods, and quality of work required for competitive employment.
  • Train students using appropriate industry methods in the following areas: carpentry and demolition, electrical, plumbing, and flooring, drywall patching, hanging and finishing, acoustical ceiling installation, floor tile and wall tile repair, lock and door installation, floor stripping and polishing
  • Provide and ensure basic safety instruction for all tasks, including OSHA requirements for Blood Borne Pathogens, Universal Precautions and Material Safety Data Sheets.
  • Adhere to lesson plans and other information and/or materials for instruction including use of Smart Board technology (training on SMART Board use provided).
  • Maintain proper inventory of training equipment and supplies; request replacements as needed. (Monthly Inventory required)
  • Responsible for accurate recording of student attendance, absentee forms and creating monthly student progress reports. Assess each student individually using a “Skills Development Checklist” for each subject.
  • Provide students with course content material such as literature, handouts, etc. (all literature is filed and would need to be printed)
  • Develop and write lesson plans for various course content to meet the needs of all learners
  • Other duties as assigned.
WORK DEMANDS & ENVIRONMENT:
  • Organizational and time management skills
  • Collaboration with other ICD team members in an effort to assist participants with obtaining and maintaining employment
  • Ability to use independent judgment and initiative
  • Professional, motivational and teamwork oriented environment
  • Ability to teach adult students from a wide range of backgrounds
  • Ability to utilize and distribute heavy construction equipment or materials requiring lifting, carrying, pushing, pulling, stooping, kneeling and reaching; weighing between 50 to 75 pounds.
  • Strong verbal, interpersonal and written communication skills; Bilingual Spanish is a big plus.
  • Previous supervisory or training experience preferred.
  • Able to create and adapt lesson plans
  • Able to work in a variety of internal settings (i.e. hot, cold, crowded, noisy, etc.).
 
QUALIFICATIONS: -High School or Equivalency diploma; College degree a plus. Able to apply for a NYSED-BPSS teaching permit/license (must apply for permit/license within 30 days of start, and get approval from NYSED-BPSS.) OSHA, EPA certifications preferred. Functional knowledge of lesson plan development, classroom management and basic teaching methods for adults. Five (5) or more years of verifiable experience in the building/facilities maintenance field is required. Computer skills and knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite; Must be able to learn the use of Smart Board technology.

HSE Instructor P/T

Position: Part-time High School Equivalency Teacher
HANAC is seeking a few part-time HSE teachers for hire for various sites around Astoria starting in September 2018. The classes are taught two or three nights per week from 6-9 pm, or Saturday mornings. Applicants must have a Bachelor’s Degree and at least 2 years teaching experience with adult learners.
HSE teachers must be able to teach 5 subject areas especially strong in math and writing.
Primary Responsibilities
  • Instruct and prepare students in the five areas of math, science, writing, reading and social studies in order to take the HSE TASC test.

Student Support Strategist F/T

Position Summary
The Isaacs Center is seeking a highly motivated, skilled, and data-driven candidate to serve as a Student Support Strategist.  The strategist will develop and facilitate academic interventions in support of young adults who have entered Education and Workforce Development at the Isaacs Center improve their literacy, advance toward a high school equivalency and college and/or develop the skills necessary to secure a career in growing New York City employment sector.  The strategist will work in close collaboration with an interdisciplinary team to identify and utilize assessment instruments that will supplement academic instruction.  The strategist also will provide administrative support and may conduct workshops designed to help young people identify college and career pathways that match their life goals.
 
Duties and Responsibilities
  • Work in close collaboration with the Instructional Leader or the Academic Coordinator to develop curriculum, coordinate testing and assessment, and create comfortable environments for diverse learners.
  • Develop and implement strategies to assist young adults who have not found success in traditional learning environments. Provide and support a differentiated instructional model.  
  • Administer multiple forms of assessment, including summative and formative assessments, and use these assessments to inform lesson planning and day to day instructional strategies
  • Facilitate instruction as needed. Provide one-on-one tutoring.
  • Incorporate practical and project-based learning opportunities, discussion groups, and media in order to create a dynamic classroom experience.
  • Maintain student portfolios, records, and contacts.
  • Light data entry (ie, attendance, test scores)
 
Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Education or similar field required
  • Knowledgeable of and ability to apply positive youth development principles
  • Demonstrated ability to motivate and challenge students to achieve a high level of performance through rigorous academic performance
  • Experience in curriculum implementation
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Excellent computer and office skills  
 Full-time, generous benefits: $45,000 to $50,000 DOE
