Union Settlement Association is an on-the-ground resource for East Harlem residents of all ages. We bring education, wellness and community-building programs to our neighborhood, empowering New Yorkers with opportunities to better their lives.
 
Union Settlement is seeking an Intergenerational Tutoring Program Coordinator will oversee a joint intergenerational tutoring program being conducted in conjunction with OASIS, a national education organization that operates tutoring programs in cities throughout the United States. Working with elementary schools in East Harlem, the Program Coordinator helps to pair older adults with young children with underdeveloped reading and language skills. The adults will serve as tutors and mentors for the students, working with them one-on-one each week. The Program Coordinator is also responsible for all aspects of this program, including recruitment, placement, scheduling, reporting and oversight, and will serve as the liaison with the partnering New York City schools, and with OASIS and the volunteer tutors.
 
This is a part-time (25 hours/week) position and candidates should possess a Bachelor’s Degree in a related field (Master’s Degree in related field a plus); significant experience in education, community outreach, and/or program coordination; the ability to undertake and complete multiple tasks at the same time; excellent oral and written communication skills, including the ability to conduct outreach and make oral presentations; and excellent organizational and management skills.

St. Nicks Alliance Workforce Development in Brooklyn has an immediate opening for a dynamic, part-time instructor for High School Equivalency (HSE) preparation.  Instructor must be committed to helping our participants achieve educational gains. 

Responsibilities include:
  • Teaching approximately 12 hours per week during the days specified - Monday-Thursday from 9:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m.
  • Creating a student-centered classroom environment for Adult Learners
  • Tracking student progress/attendance and assisting the program with all required documentation
  • Other related tasks, as necessary

Requirements:
  • Bachelor’s degree – Master’s preferred
  • Familiarity with the new TASC exam and Common Core State Standards

​Youth Action Youth Build Education Instructor 

The Education Instructor provides High School Equivalency instruction and post secondary preparation for students ages 21 to 24 years enrolled in the Youth Action YouthBuild/East Harlem (www.youthaction.nyc) program.  He/She manages a range of educational tasks and collaborates with onsite DOE personnel.

Job responsibilities and performance standards include, but are not limited to:
  • Ability to administer differentiated instruction to students with varying abilities (range 8th to 12th grade level) in Science, Mathematics, Language Arts, Reading, Social Studies and Writing.
  • Comprehension of and instruction in the standards of the NYS TASC exam.
  • Proficiency at identifying instructional goals and expectations, and a general plan for teaching them.
  • Provides ongoing assessment to determine which students are in need of additional or different types of teaching, and which would benefit from accelerated or enriched instruction.
  • Exhibits, thorough lesson planning and classroom management, the ability to acknowledge the common needs of students, while simultaneously recognizing their differences in ability, interest, and potential for growth in a particular
  • subject area or skill.
  • Assist in the scheduling of TASC, Post TABE, and Official Readiness Test (ORT) testing. 

Qualifications: Bachelor’s Degree required; Master’s Degree preferred;
Current NYS teacher certification; Familiar with current TASC exam;
A minimum of two years of successful experience teaching young adults and urban youth; comfortable in a multicultural environment.

The Bridge to College Coordinator coordinates program services, recruits program participants and provides intensive support to help participants obtain their HSE diploma, enroll in college, and successfully complete their first year.

Teacher for ‘Bridge to Health’ ESOL Class (Part-Time) 

Make the Road New York (www.maketheroadny.org) is a non-profit organization that builds the power of Latino and working class communities to achieve dignity and justice through organizing, policy innovation, transformative education, and survival services.  We have 16,000 members and operate five community centers in Bushwick, Brooklyn; Jackson Heights, Queens; Port Richmond, Staten Island; and Brentwood, Long Island.

Current Opening:
Make the Road New York’s Adult Literacy Team is seeking an experienced ESOL instructor committed to social justice who’s interested in a part time position at our community center in Bushwick, Brooklyn.  

The instructor will teach a 12 hr a wk Bridge to Health Careers Class to help higher level English language learners who are qualified to work in the healthcare field as home health aides, community health workers, CNAs, etc. to improve their language skills by studying health focused topics and materials (see schedule below). 

The class will run from January to June of 2016.  For 6 weeks in November and December before the class starts, the instructor will be paid 6-7 planning hours a week for curricular mapping and planning.  

Once class is in session the instructor will be paid at least an additional 7.5 hours a week on top of the 12 instructional hours for class planning, materials creation, individualized follow up with students, as well as minor admin duties, meetings, etc. 

Class schedule: Mondays thru Fridays 11:30 am - 2 pm

Strongly preferred: TESOL Certification or Masters in TESOL; experience working in community based social justice organizations; interest in collaboration and professional development with team members. Familiar with the contextualized ESOL instruction. 

Required: BA, at least 3 years experience teaching adults & multiple ESOL level classes.  Must be creative, organized, and committed to thematic instruction and learner-centered, participatory education. Sense of humor/good team player a plus. Excellent computer skills. 

Salary Information: Starting compensation is based on a scale set by a democratically-elected personnel committee and will depend on factors such as experience and education.

Brooklyn Public Library Adult literacy and learning department is seeking ESOL Instructors to teach beginning and intermediate level English language (ESOL) classes. The ESOL Instructor, part of an innovative and technology- and resource-rich learning environment, will teach listening, speaking, reading & writing to adults, utilizing work place and civics content. 

Requires a BA/BS, MA or certificate in TESOL a plus; Prior ESOL, ELL experience preferred; Must have excellent organizational and customer service skills; be competent in the use of office equipment, computers, database management, & network management, have knowledge in TESOL methodology and techniques; experience with multi culture, low level adult learners; ability to perform general clerical functions and problem solver with strong commitment to the department. Ability to work evening and weekends as required.

The salary for the position is $38 per hour. Hours for this position are 6 hours/week.

CUNY Start Cooperating Math Teacher (Multiple Positions)
 
CUNY Start is an intensive program for incoming college students, who have earned either a high school or high school equivalency diploma, and need to increase their academic proficiency in reading, writing, and mathematics prior to enrollment in college credit classes. The CUNY Start Cooperating Math Teacher position is a paid training opportunity to learn to use a successful, student- centered approach and curriculum with CUNY students who have significant remedial math needs.

In general, Continuing Education Teachers teach Continuing Education courses and perform related work. Under the supervision of the Program Director, the Cooperating Math Teacher is responsible for learning/supporting the work of a Lead Math Teacher in implementing the CUNY Start Mathematics curriculum.

Successful Cooperating Math Teachers may be eligible to apply for future Core Math Teacher positions at several CUNY campuses in the following semester.
