Part-Time Queens pm ESOL Instructor (Spanish Speaking) 
Make the Road New York (MRNY) builds the power of Latino and working class communities to achieve dignity and justice through organizing, policy innovation, transformative education, and survival services. Make the Road New York operates neighborhood-based community centers in Bushwick,Brooklyn; Jackson Heights, Queens; Port Richmond, Staten Island; and Brentwood, Long Island. With a membership of 20,000 low-income New Yorkers, MRNY tackles the critical issues facing our community: workplace justice, tenants’ rights, immigrant civil rights, language-access, LGBTQ justice, public education, health care access, and immigration reform.

MRNY is a multi-service organization. Our Education Department offers English to Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL), Spanish-language literacy, computer literacy, citizenship preparation and in-school and after-school youth programs. Our Community Organizing Projects help New Yorkers to implement strategies to combat shared problems, and develop leadership and the capacity for civic participation. Our Departments of Legal, Health & Support Services provides direct legal representation, case management, and facilitated enrollment into public health insurance programs, training, and strategic support for members and organizing campaigns. Our attorneys and advocates specialize in labor and employment law, public benefits, disability benefits, housing law, healthcare and health insurance access, immigration, public education, domestic violence, and LGBTQ (Lesbian, Gay,Bisexual, Transgender and Queer) civil rights issues.

Current Opening: Make the Road New York's Adult Literacy Team is seeking an experienced, bilingual/Spanish proficient ESOL instructor committed to social justice for an intensive part-time position at our our Jackson Heights, Queens community center for our Sept 2017- June 2018 academic year cycle (and potentially for work again beginning in September 2018, depending upon budget.) 
The instructor will teach ESOL as well as do class planning, materials creation, individualized follow up with students, and some meetings and professional development.

Strongly Preferred: Teaching Certification or Masters in TESOL; experience working in community based social justice organizations; interest in collaboration and professional development with team members.

Required: BA, at least 3 yrs. experience teaching ESOL to adults & multiple ESOL level classes. Must be creative, organized, and committed to thematic instruction and learner-centered, participatory education; must be able to speak some Spanish with students outside of class if not occasionally within class; Sense of humor/good team player a plus. Excellent computer skills, BEST Plus certification.

Class Schedules:
Classes will run from early Sept thru the end of June 2018 with the following schedule:
Tues - Thursdays, 6:15-9:45 pm, High beginning/low intermediate
Total hrs/wk:
16-17 hrs: (10.5 teaching hrs, 5.25 prep, .5 for mtgs and communication with students)+ on average 1 hr wk for meetings- depending on the week

Salary Information: Starting compensation is based on a scale set by a democratically-elected personnel committee and will depend on factors such as experience and education. Typically the hourly rate is in the $20's but you're paid for prep hours so it comes out on par with other community based salary rates.

Part-time ABS Spanish Literacy Instructor at LaGuardia Community College
 
The Adult Basic Skills department is seeking a dynamic, hard working educator who has significant experience teaching diverse adult, non-traditional high school equivalency population in Spanish at the basic education level, including knowledge of the New York State –approved Test Assessing Secondary Completion (TASC). Specific experience teaching reading, writing and math in Spanish .
 
Candidates must have demonstrated experience with developing theme-based and interdisciplinary adult education curricula, designing student-centered classroom environments, and utilizing a variety of assessment methods. 
 
Minimum Requirements: Bachelor of Arts/Science degree, plus at least three (3) years adult education and/or non-traditional teaching experience, along with relevant adult education professional development required.
Position available for January 2017:  Evening position Mon/Wed/Thurs 5:30am-9:30pm

We are looking for a Bilingual Health Careers Instructor for our funded El Camino Health Pathways Program.  This is a transition program (12pm-3pm) for ESL adults who will be going into certified training programs or applying for entry level jobs in the health field.  The instructor must be bilingual (English/Spanish), have direct experience in the healthcare field, and knowledge of certification requirements for a wide variety of entry level positions (home health aide, medical assistant, certified nursing, etc. ). The ideal candidate will have good communication skills in English, exhibit professionalism, and be flexible and caring. Bilingual (Spanish) Case Manager – St. Nicks Alliance Workforce Development
 
St. Nicks Alliance‘s Workforce Development division provides comprehensive workforce services leading to employment and a career ladder for unemployed and under-employed community residents.  We are currently seeking a Bilingual (Spanish) Case Manager for our Adult Education Program.  This position will be conducting assessments for individuals who need help and resources achieving educational (ESOL, HSE and ABE) goals and opportunity for financial stability. 
Duties Include:
  • Administer one on one-assessment interviews for each new participant on case load, assessing participants education and work history, need for support services, career preferences and barriers to employment.   
  • Ensure that participant’s folders are complete including copies of identification documents and case notes.
  • Support, monitor, and follow up on participant’s attendance in education classes and other related activities.
  • Ensure ETO, Capricorn, and other in-house database systems are updated.
  • Perform other tasks (i.e. graduation ceremonies, company-wide special events, etc)  in support of St. Nicks Alliance as directed.
 Qualifications: 
  • Bachelor’s degree in Social Work or related field or 3 years experience in social service organization
  • Must be bilingual (Spanish, English)
  • Able to work flex schedule to include some evenings

The 1199SEIU Training and Employment Fund is looking for part time Spanish language instructors to assist health care staff to learn conversational Spanish for their jobs in hospitals and nursing homes. We have a core curriculum with a focus on oral communication.

Responsibilities:
  • Teach a beginner level Spanish in health care settings
  • Prepare lesson plans based on our core curriculum
  • Submit attendance sheets and related documents as outlined by office staff
  • Attend professional development and administrative meetings 
  • Maintain communication with office staff about student progress, class details, etc.
 
Qualifications:
  • Degree in TESOL, Spanish or related area
  • Excellent command of the Spanish language
  • Minimum two years’ experience teaching Spanish to English speakers
  • Strong knowledge of effective second language practices
  • Must be able to create additional materials as needed
  • Must be able to travel to Bronx, Brooklyn and Manhattan
  • Excellent communication and organizational skills.
 
Morning and early afternoon hours. Some evening hours may be also needed.
Excellent hourly rate.

Monday - Thursdays, 8-10 pm, Low Intermediate
24.5 hrs, (16 teaching hrs, 8 prep, .5 for mtgs and communication with students)+ on average 1 hr wk for meetings- depending on the week

Summary:                                                                                                                                                                          
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:                                                                                         
  • Plan, prepare and deliver lessons to Spanish –speaking Pre-HSE students, preparing to take the TASC in Spanish.
  • Grade daily classwork and homework assignments and give appropriate feedback.
  • Maintain required records of pupil progress and development.
  • Research new topic areas and maintain up-to-date subject knowledge.
  • Write new curriculum materials.
  • Select and utilize a range of different learning resources and equipment.
  • Monitor student performance on a regular basis throughout the term.
  • Prepare students for TASC practice tests and administer the Readiness tests. 
  • Manage Students' classroom behavior.
  • Participate in staff development.
  • Participate in departmental meetings. 
  • Counsel and support students one-on-one through academic or personal difficulties. 
  • Liaison with other agency professionals in monitoring students' attendance and academic and job readiness progress.
  • Keep attendance on daily basis.
  • Submit lesson plans on a bi-weekly basis.

Spanish Speaking High School Equivalency math/science (ABE/HSE) Instructor  (Part-Time)

Make the Road New York’s Adult Literacy Team is seeking an experienced math/science instructor of ABE/HSE in Spanish committed to social justice and interested in a part time position at our Queens community center in Jackson Heights, Queens.  The instructor will teach math/science 9 hours a week over two days (see schedule below). The instructor will be paid at least an additional 10.5 hours a week for class planning, materials creation, individualized follow up with students, as well as minor admin duties, meetings, etc. 

Class schedule: Mondays and Tuesdays 8:30am-1:00pm

Strongly preferred: ABE/HSE Certification or Masters in Education; experience working in community based social justice organizations; interest in collaboration and professional development with team members. Able to implement the CCSS  and the NGSS in daily lesson planning.  Familiar with the current TABE exam.  Math or Science background.

Required: BA, at least 3 years experience teaching adults & multiple GED/HSE level classes.  Must be creative, organized, and committed to thematic instruction and learner-centered, participatory education; must be able to fluently speak, read and write Spanish. Sense of humor/good team player a plus. Excellent computer skills.
