ABE/HSE Reading & Writing Teacher (P/T)

The Lehman College Adult Learning Center is seeking a dynamic part-time ABE/HSE Reading & Writing Teacher to work with a diverse group of adult learners.  The class meets 1-2 days a week for three hours. The position begins in January 2019. The Lehman ALC is currently hiring for evening classes.
 
Essential duties include:                                                                                  
  • Providing high-quality theme-based instruction to help students develop their reading and writing skills
  • Designing engaging lessons to help students foster a love of reading and learning
  • Collaborating with staff and teachers to develop best teaching practices and enriching materials
  • Reviewing and communicating class progress with both staff and students
  • Actively partaking in in-house teacher meetings and citywide professional development
  • Maintaining class attendance and communicating with students about program participation issues
  • Participating in new student orientations and program-wide events and activities
  • Conducting required assessments including TABE and TASC Readiness exams
  • Having a willingness to learn and become part of the ALC community of teachers and learners

Education Requirements:
Candidate must have Bachelor's degree and relevant teaching and education experience. Prior adult education experience, Master’s Degree a plus.

The Jewish Community Council of GCI is looking to hire an experienced Adult ESL Instructor to provide ESL instruction to seniors in Brooklyn (Coney Island). Class will meet three afternoons per week.

Literacy Assistance Center
Job Title: ASISTS Program Associate (ASISTS Technical Support)
Position Overview: The ASISTS Program Associate will be responsible for providing phone and email support to users of the ASISTS data system.  The Associate will also assist the Senior Software Programmer in troubleshooting the ASISTS software and making minor fixes.  Finally, the Associate will be part of a team supporting a network of adult education programs receiving Adult Literacy Education (ALE) funds in New York City. 
Reports to: The Director of ASISTS.  The Associate will also work closely with the entire ASISTS team.  For ALE-related work, the Associate will report to the NYC STAC (Support and Technical Assistance Center) director. 
 
Background:  Since 1983, the Literacy Assistance Center (LAC) has been working to build the capacity and improve the quality of the Adult Basic Education (ABE), English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL), and High School Equivalency (HSE) programs that serve New York and the surrounding region's most educationally disadvantaged and economically marginalized communities.  One of its biggest projects is ASISTS (Adult Student Information System and Technical Support), the data system used by all programs funded by the New York State Education Department (NYSED) to manage and report student data following state and federal guidelines.  The ASISTS team maintains the ASISTS software, trains program staff and provides technical support to program users at all levels. 
 
The New York City Support and Technical Assistance Center (STAC) for Adult Literacy Education (ALE) Programs is also housed at the LAC.  The purpose of the STAC is to provide support and technical assistance to the adult education programs in New York City receiving ALE funding. 
 
Responsibilities:
  • Technical support responsibilities include:
    • Responding to requests from users of the ASISTS software for technical support.  Technical support is typically provided through email, though phone calls and webinars are also commonly used methods.
    • Working with the STAC director to provide technical support to programs receiving state ALE funds.
    • Maintaining the STAC website. 
    • Creating documentation that explain how ASISTS data entry screens and reports work.  This work also includes creating scripts for instructional videos that are posted in the ASISTS Resource Bank. 
    • Managing the ASISTS Resource Bank, a repository of user documentation, training videos and software release notes.
    • Drafting and sending out email blasts to ASISTS users after each new release.
  • Software maintenance responsibilities include:
    • Working with the ASISTS team to plan new ASISTS releases, which are usually scheduled once every two months.
    • In response to user feedback, confirming and troubleshooting ASISTS bugs.
    • Working with the Senior Software Programmer, diagnose and document software issues.  
    • Implementing simple fixes under the guidance of the Senior Programmer.
    • Helping with documentation and tracking of all ASISTS software work.
 
Schedule: Typically, Monday to Friday, 9:00 – 5:00.  Some travel may be necessary, less than once a month on average.
 
Qualifications:
  • Knowledge of HTML and CSS a must
  • Knowledge of JavaScript and JQuery a plus 
  • Familiarity with SQL or a database management system strongly preferred
  • Excellent writing skills a must as well as good interpersonal and communication abilities
  • Past experience providing technical support a plus

TASC Curriculum Developer P/T

TASC Curriculum Developer:  
Develop and implement new High School Equivalency Curriculum. Community Impact at Columbia University.
Temporary, part-time position.
 
Take the lead in refining our TASC (formerly GED) curriculum to help Adult Learners pass the NYState TASC test, ensuring alignment with Common Core Standards and integration of workplace skills.  You will work under the direction of our TASC program manager and collaborate with the workforce development curriculum coordinator, but will have an opportunity to test new ideas and methodologies.  You will also participate in prepping our volunteer teachers to teach the new curriculum.  
 
Qualifications:  Experience in adult or high school education required, especially teaching or curriculum development. Experience in workforce development a plus.  Must have an interest in community service and educating a low-income, diverse adult population.  Flexible daytime and evening hours. 10 hours per week. Start Immediately.  This is a temporary three-month position.

ESOL  Instructor P/T

Lenox Hill Neighborhood House is seeking a temporary ESOL Instructor to teach one Intermediate-level English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) course.  Reporting to our Adult Education Coordinator, the ESOL Instructor will work with adult students of all ages, including members of our two senior centers and parents of the children in our Early Childhood Center. This role will include finding appropriate instructional materials, developing lesson plans, and reporting attendance and assessment scores. The class will take place twice a week on Mondays and Fridays at 9:15am-12:15pm from Monday, January 6th through Friday, March 20th. The pay rate is $35/hour for the 60-hour class.
 
Qualifications:
The ESOL Instructor should possess a master’s degree in TESOL or Applied Linguistics with two year’s relevant experience desired. Applicants should have familiarity with identifying resources and implementing teaching strategies for a multilevel classroom as well as experience creating in-class assessments. Applicants must possess excellent computer skills and should be patient and approachable.  Successful applicants should be dedicated to empowering students and serving people of diverse backgrounds.

ESOL Instructor at the New York Public Library
The main responsibilities for the instructor are to work with Adult Learning Center Assistant Director and the Hub Manager to implement the goals and activities of the adult education program.  To teach and assist adult ESOL students in improving their English skills (reading, listening, speaking, writing).  To instruct adult ESOL students in classes and learning experiences which will lead to the achievement of their educational and personal goals. To assist in the managed enrollment process to recruit and maintain students and student records.:
  • Bachelor’s degree required, with training and/or experience in ESOL.  NYS TESOL certification preferred.​
  • Experience teaching and/or working with adults.
  • Instruct assigned English classes for 2.5 hour sessions, twice a week in 10 week cycles
  • Prepare a syllabus and daily lesson plans for each session/class based on student needs/interests, and the prescribed curriculum.
  • Administer standardized assessments
  • Assist with the intake registration and placement of new students
  • Maintain daily attendance records
  • Successfully demonstrated knowledge of technology-assisted learning instructional software, video, audio and distance learning preferred.
