Educational Specialist (Bilingual) F/T

Star Learning Center, a program of GRCC, is a year-round tutoring program for underserved students from across NYC. The program provides one-to-one academic support and educational advocacy to students in grades 2 through 12. Each student at Star is matched with a volunteer tutor. Tutors receive an orientation to the Center and their individual students and staff provide ongoing coaching and support. Star also connects students with other GRCC programs and outside resources to enable them to reach their full potential.

Schedule: Monday 11:00 am to 7:00 pm, Tuesday and Wednesday 10:30 am to 6:30 pm, Thursday and Friday 10:00 am to 6:00 pm

Roles, Responsibilities and Essential Duties

Supervise and support 200+ tutors and students every week
Evaluate academic needs of all students; administer testing for new students and write testing reports; create tutoring plans with annual goals using testing results, student report card data, IEPs, and teacher comments
Prepare and deliver tutor orientations, provide ongoing supervision of tutoring plans and continual training to volunteer tutors
Support all student-tutor pairs with modeling and materials; review and comment on every session plan prepared by tutors; offer trainings
Organize and maintain STAR’s library, including researching new book titles and tutoring materials, sorting donations, and working closely with library clerk
Research online tutoring materials for 2nd –12th grades
Tracking report card and other data to identify need for additional support
Occasionally tutor students
Communicate with parents regarding special education needs and goals, review IEPs with parents, and refer to special education advocates
Encourage and promote reading for pleasure by recommending books based on student interest and reading level
Assist in data collection for Star program evaluations

Qualifications/Educational Requirements

Bachelor’s degree required; Master’s preferred in Education or related field
Teaching/tutoring experience with children and teens
Knowledge of an Orton-Gillingham based, multi-sensory approach to teaching reading
Must be fluent in written and spoken Spanish

Skills, Knowledge and Abilities

Excellent time management skills and ability to multi-task and prioritize work
Excellent verbal and written communication skills
Excellent attention to detail
Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with students, families and tutors
Experience with literacy assessments, teaching strategies, and student data analysis
Knowledge of NYC 2-12 curriculum
Working knowledge of the New York City Special Education process including services obtained through IEPs
Knowledge of early literacy practices and children’s literature

Computer Skills Needed

Highly proficient in Microsoft Office and Google Suite applications

Part-Time Case Manager Positions (Bilingual Spanish Preferred)
Adult Basic Skills (ABS) Program at LaGuardia Community College
LaGuardia Community College is seeking two part-time case managers for its ABS High School Equivalency preparation program for 19 hours per week. This involves some day and evening hours and an occasional Saturday.

Case Manager must be comfortable with addressing barriers that will prevent students from pursuing their goal. Case Manager must work closely with teachers and administrative staff to provide the necessary support for the students in our program. learner-centered, participatory lessons and a project-based approach.
We are seeking a qualified case manager who has experience working with adult students. BA/BS degree required in social work or related field, plus a minimum of 2-3 years of experience working with adults as a case manager. Bilingual (English/Spanish) preferred.

Primary Responsibilities include:

Providing high quality support services to students we serve in the program
Interviewing prospective students to discuss possible barriers
Identifying and addressing issues as childcare, housing, family illness, work schedule, time management, finance, and other obstacles preventing students to complete their course
Communicating with students regarding absenteeism
Motivating students to persist and succeed in the program
Developing and presenting workshops on how to study, test anxiety, time management, financial literacy, etc.
Assisting students to complete GED applications
Conferencing students individually on their goals and next steps
Collaborating with the Career Development Center to assist students in applying to college
Referrals to appropriate training programs, employment opportunities and/or community agencies
Participating in professional development and staff meetings
Other related tasks, as necessary
Part-time positions 19 hours per week (flexible hours) through June 2023 (with the possibility of extending past June 2023)

Inwood Community Services, Inc., a community-based not-for-profit in Northern Manhattan, seeks an Adult Education Counselor to support ESOL and EL/Civics students. The schedule is 14 hours/week, Monday-Thursday, 5:30PM-9PM. Service provision is primarily in-person with some flexibility for remote follow-up with students
We seek:

Dedicated educators with good interpersonal skills committed to empowering adult immigrant students
Spanish/English bilingual applicants with 3-plus years’ experience in adult education or literacy
Applicants able to form referral networks with education, training, employment, and social services

Responsibilities:

Assess and develop Individual Service Plans for incoming students; follow up to evaluate student progress and assist students with education, training, job and personal goals.
Develop and maintain networks appropriate for referrals for services needed

Assist in the smooth delivery of classes. Counselors may deliver workshops on appropriate topics; support teachers with issues relating to class management; and follow up with students on issues related to learning, attendance, retention or other area of concern.
Participate in registration, orientation, pre- and post-testing

Requirements:

The ideal candidate will have a Bachelor’s Degree plus three years’ experience in adult literacy
Fluency in Spanish and English
Familiarity with the local area of Inwood and surroundings is a plus
Certification in Best Plus Administration or willing to become certified
COVID vaccination is required with very rare exceptions based on religious or medical exemption
