Assistant Director/Adult Education Counselor (P/T)
Inwood Community Services, Inc., a community-based not-for-profit located in Northern Manhattan, seeks an Assistant Director/Adult Education Counselor for its Adult Literacy Program. The 20 hour/week position is part-time and in-person, Monday-Thursday, 4PM-9PM.
We seek:                                                                      
  • Dedicated educators with good interpersonal skills committed to empowering adult immigrant students
  • Spanish/English bilingual applicants with 5-plus years’ experience in Adult Literacy education and working familiarity with the New York City Adult Literacy Initiative
  • Resourceful, self-motivated applicants who can demonstrate strong organizational skills, experience in program or contract development, and can provide direct counseling and referral services to students for education, training, employment, and social services
Responsibilities:
  • Work closely with the Director to monitor, coordinate and deliver the ICS Adult Literacy Program
  • Assist in the daily smooth delivery of classes.
  • Interview and evaluate incoming students to develop Individual Service Plans; follow up to evaluate student progress; and assist with education, training, job and personal goals
  • Develop and maintain networks appropriate for referrals for services needed
 
Requirements:
  • Above all, we seek the right candidate who is committed to building relationships, working harmoniously with our staff, students and community and working in the field of adult literacy.
  • The ideal candidate will have a Bachelor’s Degree and five years’ experience in adult literacy
  • Fluency in Spanish and English
  • Familiarity with the local area of Inwood and surroundings is a plus
  • Certification in Best Plus Administration or willing to become certified
  • COVID vaccination is required with very rare exceptions based on religious or medical exemption
 
Compensation: based on experience.

ICS is a not-for-profit located in the neighborhood of Inwood, Northern Manhattan with diverse community-oriented programming, including its nearly 40-year Adult Literacy program. Assistant Director of the Adult Learner Program
 
Queens Library's mission is to meet the needs of the community by offering lifelong learning opportunities, ensuring there is a positive impact in the community. Queens Library offers an amazing number and diversity of programs that include adult literacy, early childhood education, after-school programs, STEAM, citizenship and immigration, job training, high school equivalency education, ESOL, programs for older adults and much more. We are seeking a creative, customer service driven Library professional who is eager to join a renowned leader in providing creative and innovative adult literacy programs.
 
Within the larger scope of formal and informal learning within the Programs & Services Department’s (PSD), Adult Learning division, the Assistant Director of the Adult Learner Program (ALP) plans, organizes, coordinates, and supervises Queens Library’s Adult Learning Centers (ALCs) and Young Adult Literacy Services. This position serves as a key member of the Adult Learning leadership team and is responsible for overseeing all aspects of the curriculum, instruction, recruitment, registration, orientation, advising graduation, and other activities at the ALCs. Reports to the Director of Adult Learning.
 
The Assistant Director of the Adult Learner Program works closely with Adult Learning staff and the larger Programs & Services Department to ensure that services are integrated and collaborative. Ensures best practices, procedures, and reciprocal referrals are made across Adult Learning and PSD to best meet the needs of the diverse and changing populations of Queens. The Assistant Director of the Adult Learner Program works with Community Library Services and other departments to identify or resolve issues related to facilities. The Assistant Director remains current with trends and best practices in adult literacy and plans for proposed changes in instruction, funding, and reporting requirements that could impact the Centers.

ASSISTANT DIRECTOR OF EDUCATION PROGRAMS
NEW YORK CITY COLLEGE OF TECHNOLOGY 
DIVISION OF CONTINUING EDUCATION
Reporting to the Director of Education Programs, the Assistant Director oversees day-to-day operational aspects of Adult Education Programs, which includes two principal programs:  Adult Learning Center, providing ESOL, BE and High School Equivalency preparation to adult learners, and the CUNY Language Immersion Program (CLIP) offering  college preparation to CUNY-accepted ESOL students. The position involves two major areas of responsibility: organizational and instructional. The first includes scheduling classes; overseeing student intake, testing and placement; and managing the student data and reporting system. The second includes working with teachers to ensure quality instruction within the CUNY content-based approach to adult education. The Assistant Director provides support and carries out related tasks as instructed by the Director.

Responsibilities include:
  • Overseeing and coordinating student intake, registration, testing, placement, class scheduling, and related program activities
  • Assisting instructors and counselors with student management 
  • Working with instructors to develop, select and implement effective content-based curricula
  • Identifying staff development needs and overseeing the provision of staff development
  • Managing student database and supervising data collection, entry and update
  • Preparing reports for funders and assisting in developing proposals
  • Acting as a liaison to establish and strengthen partnerships in support of education programs
  • Assisting the Director of Education Programs in hiring and supervision of staff, program development and planning, and other aspects of program management, as needed
  • Flexibility to work evenings and some Saturday hours 

Qualifications:
  • BA in education or related field; MA preferred
  • At least three years in program administration, preferably in a grant-funded program 
  • Relevant teaching experience in adult basic education or GED preparation programs 
  • Experience with thematic, content-based curricula
  • Ability to work with a computerized database, spreadsheets, e-mail and the Internet
  • Excellent writing and oral communication skills 
  • Well organized; able to prioritize and delegate responsibility 
  • Ability to juggle multiple tasks, be flexible, creative, resourceful and able to work as part of a team

Salary range:  $55,000 - $62,000, depending on experience and qualifications
