The Adult Basic Education Program at Borough of Manhattan Community College (BMCC, CUNY) Center for Continuing Education and Workforce Development seeks a part-time English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) instructor for our Integrated English Language and Civics Education (IELCE) program. IELCE is an innovative program that combines English language acquisition with high demand workforce training and certification. This instructor would teach an evening (6-9pm) ESOL class on Tuesdays and Wednesdays onsite at 25 Broadway, NY, NY 10004 to Intermediate/Advanced English learners. The ESOL class supports technical training on Hospitality topics (e.g. working in restaurants, hotels, coffee shops) that leads to student certification from the American Hotel and Lodging Educational Institute (AHLEI). Instructor knowledge of hospitality/customer services is desired but not required. This role would replace an existing ESOL instructor who would transition to another class. Our ideal candidate could start as soon as December 2025 or in January 2026. The class will end in June 2026 with the culmination of our fiscal year, with the strong possibility of renewal upon successful completion.
Our teachers work as part of an educational collaborative helping students construct knowledge they need for academic and career success. Using a meaning-based, problem-solving approach, teachers honor and build upon students’ knowledge base to establish a learning community. Candidates must be committed to Adult Education and should be able to design and implement engaging, critical, culturally-relevant thematic curricula and creative, project-based learning activities. There is an expectation the ESOL instructor collaborate with the Hospitality Instructor and IELCE Program Coordinator to ensure an integrated, thoughtful offering for participating students. Prep time is available upon direct discussion with candidates. Extra hours are also available, depending on the instructor’s availability and the program’s needs, to support critical academic activities such as intake, assessment, and student support.
Qualifications:
- Professional knowledge and interest in state-of-the-art methodologies and techniques for teaching English learners.
- Familiar with authentic assessment practices and appropriate materials for adult learners.
- Excellent oral and written communication skills.
- Strong interpersonal skills and ability to build positive relationships with students.
- Commitment to the educational advancement of low-income individuals.
- BA degree required.
