Teacher / Trainer Role Details:
As businesses and technologies shift, the skills required to succeed in the workforce are also changing. America Works provides each jobseeker a suite of education and training opportunities – tailored to that jobseeker’s unique needs – to help improve their options in the current economic landscape in New York City. The Opportunity:
Teacher / Trainers (“Trainers”) will work with America Works’ Education and Training Team, a team of nearly 20 fellow educators to facilitate engaging training programs that provide critical knowledge and tangible, marketable skills to adult jobseekers. The ideal candidate has experience teaching, enjoys working with diverse groups of people, is interested in being a part of a dynamic team of educators interested in sharing best practices and collaborating on curriculum and classroom engagement tactics, and is a self-starter looking to play a proactive role in helping shape the education department at America Works. The trainer will work closely with clients in the Bronx location.

Opportunity Details:
As a key member of the America Works Education and Training Team, the Trainer will have opportunities to:
  • Work with education and training team to provide job-readiness, skill development, and vocational training to low-income and unemployed adults (“AW clients”)
  • Plan and facilitate classes in English (and, in the case of selected Spanish-speaking candidates, potentially facilitate courses in Spanish)
  • Support AW clients on a path toward long-term success by seeking to understand / identify their individual career needs and corresponding career milestones and goals; refer AW clients into technical skills training and certification programs
  • Translate complex material in a way that is engaging, dynamic, and relatable for AW clients interested in various career paths; relate class content to real-life scenarios in which AW clients may find themselves
  • Assist Spanish-speaking AW clients in navigating the job search process
  • Work with America Works’ job placement team to connect AW clients in classes with logical employment opportunities based on demonstrated skills, career goals, and character / professional strengths
  • Facilitate feedback surveys and track attendance, examination, and employment outcomes for AW clients in classes

Qualifications:
  • College degree required
  • Must have 1-2 years of experience teaching

Location:
  • America Works is hiring trainers for locations in the Bronx, Staten Island, and Downtown Brooklyn. Travel to midtown Manhattan may be required at times.

The Future Now Program at Bronx Community College seeks a highly responsible, organized, and dedicated full-time Program Assistant with outstanding administrative and organizational skills to do intensive data entry and provide administrative support to Future Now’s HSE and College Programs. Reporting to the Assistant Director of Future Now, the Program Assistant will assist with the daily needs of the successful operations of Future Now.
Qualifications:

Responsibilities:
  • The Program Assistant will be responsible for entering data in multiple databases, helping with student outreach, intake, testing and other administrative tasks to support Future Now’ s HSE, College-Prep, and College Now Programs.
  • Provide daily administrative support to the Assistant Director, College Manager, and Office Manager Team.
  • Enter student and program data into Salesforce and DYCD Connect Databases.
  • Prepare testing and recruitment materials.  
  • Schedule meetings and assist with organizing students’ events. Draft meeting notes and planning templates.
  • Send emails, update records, and respond to inquiries from candidates applying to Future Now.
  • Review students’ records, email staff with different requests, answer and make phones calls, do photocopying, faxing, filing, typing, and updating of waiting lists.
  • Call students for intake and testing appointments, for re-enrollment, to follow up on absences, etc. if/as needed. Pre and post-test students’ Reading and Math Levels using TABE 11 and 12.
  • Enter information in Salesforce or Google forms about new class candidates, attendance, call notes, outreach work, scheduled appointments, test scores, etc.
  • Communicate via phone, email, etc. with team members and across the program as needed to keep work moving smoothly. Complete other tasks, as needed, to support the program.  
  • Attend training and meeting as needed.
Compensation:
Starting salary will depend on factors such as experience and education.  Future Now is a program of the Research Foundation of CUNY which offers a generous benefit package including health insurance and Retirement Fund.

Adult Basic Skills HSE Preparation Program

LaGuardia Community College is seeking a part-time Math teacher for its ABS/HSE preparation program for a class that meets in 9:30am-1pm, 3 mornings per week to begin in January 2020. We are seeking a qualified creative educator who has an understanding of adult education pedagogy and experience working with adult students. Candidates should demonstrate a solid knowledge of math, familiarity with the TASC exam, expertise in designing a student centered classroom; BA/BS degree required in teaching or related field, plus a minimum of 2-3 years teaching experience preferably with adults.
Primary Responsibilities include:
  • Providing high quality Math instruction in a learner-centered classroom
  • Developing curricula to include lesson plans and materials based on student needs
  • Incorporating CUNY framework lessons and materials to prepare students to pass the TASC Math exam

Literacy Trust has a staff of 18 and a budget of $2 million. Their signature program, Reading Rescue, is currently utilized in 122 New York City schools throughout the five boroughs, reaching over 900 educators and 1500 students. Literacy Trust staff provides professional development and ongoing support for teachers, paraprofessionals, and other school community members to ensure that attendees of that training can provide students with literacy intervention. Students in Literacy Trust partner schools are overwhelmingly students of color in underserved, high poverty neighborhoods, and Literacy Trust prioritizes partnering with schools that need this kind of support most. Position:
Literacy Trust is seeking a new Executive Director who will continue to expand their efforts in NYC public schools. The Executive Director will be a skilled leader who is experienced in working with urban school populations, as well as an exceptional and progressive manager.  This person must be highly intelligent, an entrepreneurial self-starter who shares the board’s vision of the opportunity and commitment to Literacy Trust’s core mission.  They will have substantial experience in the not-for-profit environment - especially in education - and have experience with staff and program development, as well as communications.  The successful candidate must be capable of monitoring the organization’s effectiveness and building upon its influence. In addition, they must be a skilled fundraiser, a hands-on manager, a strategic thinker and planner, a problem solver. The Executive Director will be of the highest integrity, and possess sound judgment as well as a sense of humor and compassion.
 
Specific Responsibilities:
Strategic Planning and Management
  • Oversee and partner with board on growth and regional expansion strategy
  • Set and achieve programmatic, fundraising, and other goals aligned with regional plans
  • Build organizational infrastructure and capacity to support future growth
  • Create staffing structures to meet growth needs
  • Maintain a positive team culture that is mission focused

External Relations Management

  • Partner with NYC Department of Education, NYC Mayor’s office, and other city agencies to drive resources to the region
  • Develop and manage the regional board to provide effective local leadership and ambassadorship
  • Work closely with the Director of External Relations to:
    • Drive all external relation activities in the region to grow and scale the program’s regional impact
    • Build and grow relationships with district-level leaders to ensure Reading Rescue’s success as a best in class literacy intervention
    • Increase organization visibility and profile in local media markets through successful creation and implementation of a regional communications plan

Program Oversight
  • Provide executive oversight of all program operations:  compliance, quality assurance, and program efficacy
  • Recommit current schools and recruit new schools to ensure Reading Rescue makes a significant impact in New York City literacy
  • Consult with Academic Advisor and Director of Program on key programmatic decisions

Business Operations
  • Oversee all business functions (accounting, HR, IT, legal, health care, benefits, etc.), with significant support from the Director of Operations, Talent and Culture and an external accountant
  • Oversee organization budget and provide accurate financial reporting to the board of directors
  • Ensure policies and procedures are maintained and enforced for proper financial controls and reporting

Qualifications:
  • Bachelor’s degree; Master’s degree preferred
  • Minimum of 8-10 years of proven leadership, fundraising, and management experience
  • Demonstrated organizational leadership ability, which includes effectively managing and motivating a team to achieve program goals
