Adult Education Counselor P/T

Adult Education Counselor (P/T)
Inwood Community Services, Inc. seeks an Adult Education Counselor to support ESOL and EL/Civics students. The schedule is 12 hours/week, Monday-Thursday, 6PM-9PM, with some flexibility. Services occur remotely but may in the future revert to in-person, depending on health and safety conditions and prioritizing staff and student safety.
We seek:
  • Dedicated educators with good interpersonal skills committed to empowering adult immigrant students
  • Spanish/English bilingual applicants with 3-plus years’ experience in adult education or literacy
  • Applicants able to form referral networks with education, training, employment, and social services
Responsibilities:
  • Assess and develop Individual Service Plans for incoming students
  • Follow up to evaluate student placement, progress and attendance in class
  • Assist students in overcoming barriers to attendance or retention
  • Assist students with education, training, job and personal goals; develop and maintain networks appropriate for referrals for services needed
  • Maintain records of all counseling interactions
  • Assist in the smooth delivery of classes. Counselors may deliver workshops on appropriate topics, support teachers with issues relating to class management, follow up with students on issues related to learning, behavior, attendance, retention or other area of concern.
  • Participate in registration, orientation, pre- and post-testing
Requirements:
  • The ideal candidate will have a Bachelor’s Degree plus three years’ experience in adult literacy
  • Fluency in Spanish and English
  • Familiarity with the local area of Inwood and surroundings is a plus
  • Certification in Best Plus Administration or willing to become certified
  • COVID vaccination is required with very rare exceptions based on religious or medical exemption
 
Compensation: based on experience.
ICS is a community-based not-for-profit in Northern Manhattan with a 32-year Adult Literacy program and a long-tenured staff.  We seek staff from the local area as well as those outside the neighborhood committed to the field of adult literacy.

ESOL Instructor P/T

ESOL Instructor (P/T)
Inwood Community Services, Inc. is seeking part-time ESOL EL/Civics instructors to teach on Monday/Wednesday or Tuesday/Thursday 6:00 – 9:30 PM from the last week in January through June. Instruction will be provided remotely, with the possibility of converting to in-person classes during the term if health and safety conditions permit.
We seek:
  • Dedicated teachers committed to empowering adult immigrant students through English language education
  • Applicants with 3 plus years-experience teaching ESOL with experience in remote instruction
  • Instructors with the flexibility to teach remotely or in-person. The decision to revert to in-person classes will prioritize staff and student safety.
Responsibilities:
  • Provide ESOL Instruction to develop skills in speaking, listening, reading and writing
  • Develop and implement student-centered lesson plans that engage students and assist them in navigating the activities of their lives
  • Administer the Best Plus Post-test
  • Maintain records of student attendance and progress; complete student progress reports as needed
  • Work with program staff to deliver effective programming that motivates students to persist and succeed
Requirements:
  • Bachelor’s Degree required; Certificate or Master’s in TESOL or Education a plus.
  • Certified administrator of Best Plus, or willing to become certified through training within the first semester of hire.
  • Proficiency in running virtual classes on Zoom.
  • Ability to connect with our immigrant / adult learning population.

ESOL/ABE/HSE Instructors P/T

Queens Public Library / Long Island City Adult Learning Center 
Position Title:   Part-Time ESOL/ABE/Pre-HSE/HSE Teachers
Hiring Wage:  $38-S40 per/hour 

SUMMARY:
These part-time positions will provide instruction to our ESOL/ABE/Pre-HSE/HSE students at Queens Public Library’s (QPL) Long Island City / Adult Learning Center (LIC/ALC). The teacher will also provide educational guidance to students to ensure the quality of instruction, effective programming, and adequate documentation towards positive educational gain, per government and private foundation contractual requirements. Duties will include assisting in all aspects of lesson planning and teaching the above classes/students utilizing QPL’s Community Learning Program (CLP)-approved curricula and prescribed teaching methodology, including answering student inquiries and providing them instructional support. Also, including assisting LIC/ALC staff and volunteers during registration, pre-and post-testing, and data collection as it relates to class attendance and students’ educational goals & outcomes, as well as helping to track inventory including textbooks, BEST Plus & BEST Literacy test materials. Lastly, duties will include working with Lead Instructors to review and revise curricula and lesson plans prior to each semester, attending internal staff development training/meetings, and external conferences/training, as necessary.  Perform other duties as required.
 
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Applies content knowledge and expertise in teaching to drive participant progress and outcomes.
  • Designs and implements lesson plans that ensure students make measurable skills gains.
  • Administers BEST Plus, Best Literacy, TABE, TASC Readiness, and other applicable testing instruments to assess participants’ measurable skills gains.
  • Refines lessons learned from professional development workshops to develop recommendations for students.
  • Collaborates with the administration to create lesson plans/curricula that allow for flexibility and encourage experimentation/innovation and digital literacy within the overall structure.
  • Facilitates the distribution of information gained through meetings and observations.
  • Leverages best practices in Adult Education principles and instruction to build upon the current curriculum.
  • Recommends appropriate materials and resources to participants, and provides access to computer-assisted instruction.
  • Collaborates in reviewing, editing, and revising curricula as needed.
  • Manages online communications and online support with students.
  • Establishes a clear pedagogy and set of goals/outcomes that guide the entire students.
  • Develops lesson plans sequences for ESOL, ABE, pre-HSE, and HSE resulting in coherent and well-articulated progression across NRS educational levels.
  • Outlines framework to informally assess students during the process of achieving program outcomes and objectives.
  • Incorporates interdisciplinary approaches within the curricula when appropriate.
  • Procures materials, and resources to implement into curricula.
 
The schedule for this position will include Saturdays and evenings as required.
 
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Education required. Evidence of mastery and application of adult education principles required.
  • Experience with integrating technology into classroom instruction and supplemental learning outside of a classroom setting required.
  • Strong facilitation, training, and professional development skills are required.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a fast-paced, demanding, and complex work environment required.
  • Must possess strong interpersonal skills, exceptional attention to detail, and be highly organized. Strong written, verbal, and digital communication skills.
 
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
  • MA in TESOL or related field; also, adult education certification and/or 2-3 years experience teaching adults preferred, as well as TABE and/or BEST Plus/BEST ESOL certification.
  • Working knowledge of TASC/GED, TABE Assessment, Best Plus, and Best Literacy preferred.

Duties:

  • Assist in outreach, intake, orientation and case management of participants.
  • Collect and report data for performance-based contracts.
  • Maintain accurate and complete participant files.
  • Maintain clean and organized spaces.
  • Asist in individual and/or small group work with students.
Qualifications:
  • Bi-lingual in Spanish/English or Mandarin/English required
  • High School Diploma or HSE required and 2 years of experience working as a Program Assistant preferred.
  • Friendly, professional demeanor both in person and over the telephone.

HSE Instructor P/T

The Fifth Avenue Committee is looking for an HSE instructor to teach Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday mornings from 9:00 AM to 1:00 PM. (Position is hybrid: Both in-person and remote instruction required)
 
  • Applicant must be comfortable teaching all levels of high school math, social studies, science, reading and writing. 
  • Applicant must be familiar with TABE 11/12 test administration and the GED testing process.
  • Applicant must be able to incorporate technology (including remote teaching tools and computer based testing) into instruction.
  • Applicant must be confident managing a classroom of participants with varied learning histories and styles. 
 
Compensation: $38 per hour
 
Qualifications
B.A./B.S. degree is required and at least two years recent, relevant teaching experience.
