Academic Program Specialist F/T

General Description
Reporting to the Assistant Director of Education Programs and the Director of Special Projects, the Academic Program Specialist assists to oversee day-to-day operational aspects of grant-funded adult education classes, primarily at offsite locations.  The Adult Learning Center (ALC) provides English to Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL), Basic Education (BE) and High School Equivalency (HSE) preparation to adult learners in downtown Brooklyn and offsite.  
 
Responsibilities include:
  • Assisting with all aspects of student enrollment and placement
  • Coordinating with Data Manager and teachers to calendar, identify, and administer appropriate testing
  • Assisting instructors and counselors with student management
  • Working with instructors to select and implement effective content-based curricula
  • Assisting with student database management and data collection
  • Acting as a liaison between offsite teachers and main ALC office to ensure a smooth flow of communication
  • Coordinating and participating in outreach and student retention efforts, including posting on social media and coordinating student surveys
  • Assisting the Directors in hiring and supervision of staff, program development and planning, and other aspects of program management, as needed
 
Other Duties
  • Ability to work evenings and some Saturday hours
  • Ability to travel regularly to Borough Park, Brooklyn and other offsite locations 
  • Complete tasks as needed to support goals and initiatives of the Division of Continuing Education and the College
 
Qualifications
  • BA in education or related field; MA in TESOL or related field preferred
  • At least three years in program administration, preferably in a grant-funded program
  • Bilingual English/Spanish preferred
  • Relevant teaching experience in ESOL or adult basic education preparation programs
  • Experience with thematic, content-based curricula
  • Ability to work with a computerized database, spreadsheets, e-mail and the Internet
  • Excellent writing and oral communication skills
  • Well organized; able to prioritize and delegate responsibility
  • Ability to juggle multiple tasks, be flexible, creative, resourceful and able to work as part of a team

Brooklyn Public Library Adult Learning is seeking a self-driven, motivated integrated education and training Medical Billing instructor who strives in assisting participants in reaching their career goal in life. Responsibilities

Class schedule: Saturdays 10am-1pm and online classroom portal
Participants are enrolled in 15 hours of mandatory classroom instruction (Mon.-Thurs. 6p-9p and Sat. 10a-1p) We are seeking a Saturday instructor to reiterate skills being taught during the evening classes (lab).
Pay rate: $40 per hour for 3 hours of instruction on Saturdays and 1 hour of prep. Total of 4 hours per week for 15 weeks.

ESOL Tutor P/T

The CUNY Language Immersion Program (CLIP) at Bronx Community College provides intensive English language instruction to adult immigrants who plan to matriculate in a CUNY college. We are looking for an evening tutor who will work under the direction of classroom teachers to assist students in all four language domains. Responsibilities may include:
  • helping students, one-on-one, to revise their essays for grammar, mechanics, and content
  • working with students individually and in groups on reading skills
  • honing oral presentation and pronunciation skills
  • assisting students with annotation during read-alouds and taking notes during lectures
  • assisting students with PowerPoint presentations
 
Tutors may also be asked to facilitate whole-class instruction and group work, as well as grade student assessments. Applicants must be flexible enough to work with faculty members with a variety of teaching styles.  Prior experience working with ESL students and some graduate coursework in TESOL/Applied Linguistics preferred.
 
Hours: 
Evening Position:     5:15 PM to 9:45 PM    Three evenings per week. The days are flexible.

SUMMARY OF RESPONSIBILITIES:
The ABE/HSE Literacy/Social Studies Specialist is a part-time position responsible for providing instruction to ABE/HSE classes in the Adult Education division of the Education & Career Services department in conjunction with a Science/Math specialist. The ABE/HSE instructor is responsible for teaching content- literacy, social studies to young adult and adult learners enrolled in education classes.
 
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Develop and facilitate curriculum for ABE and HSE instruction based on educational and Common Core Standards.
  • Provide English, Writing, and Social Studies instruction to prepare students for the test to obtain their high school equivalency diploma, i.e., Test Assessing Secondary Completion (TASC)
  • Collaborate with the Science/Math specialist to coordinate class activities and conference on students
  • Develop and deliver daily lesson plans and educational activities for program participants.
  • Monitor students' engagement and classroom conduct.
  • Maintain attendance records and submit attendance logs to program staff.
  • Complete biweekly case notes according to funders’ mandates.

  • Host guest speakers, volunteers and/or alternate programming when needed.
  • Attend professional development sessions and program meetings.
  • Initiate and participate in case conferencing sessions as needed.

In addition, the instructor will develop and submit regular lesson logs, write student case notes, provide insight on the existing curriculum and meet professional development requirements. This is a part time role with availability in the mornings or evenings.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Develop and deliver daily lesson plans and educational activities for students in ESOL programming.
  • Administer assessment tests and track results.
  • Monitor students’ educational progress and liaise with staff members provide feedback and establish educational plans.
  • Complete and submit weekly lesson logs and bimonthly student case notes.
  • Maintain attendance records, ensure accuracy of completion and submit them to program staff.
  • Attend professional development sessions according to city and state standards.
  • Attend and participate in regular program meetings.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Responsibilities:
