SUMMARY OF RESPONSIBILITIES:
The ESOL Instructor is a part-time position responsible for providing instruction to English classes in the Adult Education division of the Education & Career Services department. NMIC’s ESOL classes focus on practical communication skills alongside developing English language literacy for adult ELLs. Classes will be taught hybrid. This is an in-person position. We offer both morning and evening classes. We offer morning (9-12) and evening (6-9) classes.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Develop and facilitate curriculum ESOL classes in alignment with NMIC’s standards.
  • Prepare students to take the Best Plus 2.0 exam.
  • Develop and deliver daily lesson plans and educational activities for program participants.
  • Collaborate with the rest of the adult education team to develop program wide initiatives.
  • Monitor students' engagement and classroom conduct.
  • Maintain attendance records and submit attendance logs to program staff.
  • Enter biweekly case notes into NMIC database according to funders’ mandates.
  • Submit lesson plans weekly
  • Administer Best Plus 2.0 (training will be provided).
  • Host guest speakers, volunteers and/or alternate programming when needed.
  • Maintain an active Google Classroom.
  • Utilize technology in the classroom to enrich the educational experience
  • Attend professional development sessions and program meetings.
  • Initiate and participate in case conferencing sessions as needed.
  • Other duties as assigned.

P/T ESOL Instructor
Adult English Language and Literacy (AELL) is the direct service provider of ESOL and adult literacy instruction for the New York Public Library.  They use professional teachers to offer free instruction to adult patrons in reading, writing, speaking and listening from a 0 to 8th grade level. Through formal classes in language and literacy, as well as elective offerings such as English conversation and citizenship preparation groups, AELL has taken on the charge to expand ESOL programming in the Library through both in-person and online instruction.

Key Responsibilities:

Working with the Associate Director and the Hub Manager, hourly instructors will:
  • Teach ESOL classes that promote English language proficiency for students assessed at NRS levels 1-6
  • Follow the prescribed curriculum in a communicative language  teaching environment during class-time.
  • Instruct adult ESOL students in classes and learning experiences which will lead to the achievement of their educational and personal goals.
  • Assist in the managed enrollment process to recruit and maintain students and student records
  • Maintain daily attendance records
  • Prepare weekly lesson plans for each session based on the curriculum.

Skills Knowledge & Expertise
  • Bachelor’s degree required, with training and/or experience in ESOL
  • Experience teaching adults both in-person and online
  • Strong interpersonal skills. Ability to work well with a variety of people, in a multicultural setting, involving a variety of team situations
  • Experience administering standardized assessments

Brooklyn Workforce Innovations (BWI) – a nonprofit workforce development organization – seeks a dynamic individual to work as a contracted Digital Literacy Instructor for the Brooklyn Workforce Collaboration Housing Career Pathways Training Program. BWI is a nonprofit, Brooklyn-based workforce development
organization that changes the lives of hundreds of jobless New Yorkers each year by offering them the skills and support they need to launch lasting careers. We seek to develop programs that counter prevailing market inequalities, especially those based on race and gender, and contribute to a broader movement for economic
justice.

Housing Career Pathways is a free, four-week in-person training program with a two-week internship component that aims to connect unemployed and underemployed adult New Yorkers (18+) residing in NYCHA public housing or HPD’s affordable housing with well-paying career opportunities in administrative affordable
housing property management roles.

Responsibilities
  • Coordinate and deliver in-person workshops and computer-based classes relating to digital literacy, including Microsoft Suite (basic to advanced Outlook, Word, and Excel), Google Suite, Job Search, etc.
  • Provide quality instruction that fosters an academic learning climate, actively supporting teaching and learning
  • Mentor, counsel, and tutor trainees as needed
  • Collaborate with program staff to refine program curriculum and adapt it to current program needs
  • Implement methods to assess and measure participant learning
  • Maintain attendance records and other data required for reporting purposes

Qualifications
  • Interest and experience in education or training, especially in socioeconomically diverse and underserved communities. Group facilitation experience preferred.

  • Advanced to expert knowledge of Microsoft office products such as: Word, Excel, and Outlook and web-based applications such as: Google Docs, Email, and job search engines
  • Knowledge of e-learning and assessment tools a plus (i.e. Northstar Digital Learning)

Estimated Total Project Time
Approximately 76 hours including 60 hours of instruction, 10 hours classroom prep, and 6 weekly planning meetings (we are open to how to format class instruction and preparation time on a weekly basis).

Location

The BMCC/CUNY Adult Education Program is seeking a dynamic, hardworking educator who has significant experience working with a diverse population of adult, non-traditional high school equivalency students. Candidate should have experience teaching all four sections of the GED, including math. Candidate must be comfortable and able to work off-site on the Lower East Side, and serve students who predominantly reside in the Lillian Wald and Riis Housing complexes. Candidate must be able to liaise between BMCC and our partner agencies on the LES. Candidate must be able to work independently and have excellent interpersonal skills.

  • Available to teach 3 mornings from 9:30 am - 1:30 pm
