Title: Digital Literacy Instructor 
Program: Brooklyn Workforce Collaboration - Housing Career Pathways

Brooklyn Workforce Innovations (BWI) – a nonprofit workforce development organization – seeks a dynamic individual to work as a contracted Digital Literacy Instructor for the Brooklyn Workforce Collaboration Housing Career Pathways Training Program. BWI is a nonprofit, Brooklyn-based workforce development
organization that changes the lives of hundreds of jobless New Yorkers each year by offering them the skills and support they need to launch lasting careers. We seek to develop programs that counter prevailing market inequalities, especially those based on race and gender, and contribute to a broader movement for economic
justice.

Housing Career Pathways is a free, four-week in-person training program with a two-week internship component that aims to connect unemployed and underemployed adult New Yorkers (18+) residing in NYCHA public housing or HPD’s affordable housing with well-paying career opportunities in administrative affordable
housing property management roles.

Responsibilities
  • Coordinate and deliver in-person workshops and computer-based classes relating to digital literacy, including Microsoft Suite (basic to advanced Outlook, Word, and Excel), Google Suite, Job Search, etc.
  • Provide quality instruction that fosters an academic learning climate, actively supporting teaching and learning
  • Mentor, counsel, and tutor trainees as needed
  • Collaborate with program staff to refine program curriculum and adapt it to current program needs
  • Implement methods to assess and measure participant learning
  • Maintain attendance records and other data required for reporting purposes
  • Attend meetings with program staff as needed

Qualifications
  • Interest and experience in education or training, especially in socioeconomically diverse and underserved communities. Group facilitation experience preferred.
  • Experience leading structured computer-based classes for adult students with various degrees of computer skills and education levels preferred.
  • Advanced to expert knowledge of Microsoft office products such as: Word, Excel, and Outlook and web-based applications such as: Google Docs, Email, and job search engines
  • Knowledge of e-learning and assessment tools a plus (i.e. Northstar Digital Learning)
  • Administrative experience and ability to stay organized and thorough; strong attention to detail
  • Ability to work well independently and as a member of a team, and with a wide variety of stakeholders, including low-income job seekers

Estimated Total Project Time
Approximately 76 hours including 60 hours of instruction, 10 hours classroom prep, and 6 weekly planning meetings (we are open to how to format class instruction and preparation time on a weekly basis).

Location
This position will report in person to our training space at the Innovation Lab at Industry City in Brooklyn, NY.
Pre-training preparation is flexible for remote/in-person.

Compensation: $45-50 per hour, depending on experience.

BWI maintains a fun and inclusive office culture, welcomes casual attire, and offers flexibility in work schedules. Eligible for up to two days of telecommuting per week, with supervisor approval. Position: Education Specialist (Computer/Digital Literacy)
Department: Adult Education

Summary: Union settlement Adult Education is seeking an Education Specialist (Computer/Digital Literacy) to provide in person support that reports to the Adult Education Director. The Education Specialist has the overall responsibility for the development and implementation of the academic curriculum, program compliance and quality assurance. The agency has embraced the concept of a fully integrated system of care for all consumers of service. This requires that all Agency staff assess the client’s needs holistically and see it as their responsibility to connect the client with services need – internal or external to the agency, regardless of the door through which the consumer enters the system. The ideal candidate will be a hard-working professional able to undertake a variety of teaching approaches. This person will be comfortable working with a high degree of attention to detail and discretion as well as incorporating new and effective ways to

Responsibilities: 
  • Must well organized. 
  • Provide an engaging, interactive lessons that will teach life skills students the abilities that they need to succeed in society. Lessons such as basic money management, written and verbal communication skills, and filling out job applications are essential. 
  • Develop and / or utilize lesson plans that reflect an understanding of how best to teach reading, writing, grammar, listening, speaking, and technology skills in thematically organized and developmentally / culturally appropriate ways. 
  • Must be comfortable speaking in front of an audience. 
  • Must present material to students each day in an engaging and easy to understand manner. 
  • Complete monthly student assessments.
  • Teach computer literacy, in a manner which builds student skill level and confidence. Manage attendance regularly, including documenting classroom and submitting attendance for each class. 
  • Pre and post-test students using assessment tools. 
  • Ability to build an effective classroom environment that is conducive to learning and appropriate for adult learners 
  • Must implement a variety of instructional delivery methods, including group or individualized instructions 
  • Must offer basic computer and mobile device skills, including website, internet, email, social media, privacy and internet safety 
  • Must provide basic to advance software skills, including Microsoft Office, Word and Excel 
  • Must assess student personality, interests and skills in order to identify career opportunities 
  • Ability to instruct in a manner that develops confidence and encourages creativity 
  • Ability to engage students who may have had no prior, or limited, access to technology 
  • Must exhibit excellent assessment, documentation, organizational, and communication skills 
  • Meet with Program Manager/Director providing updates on student and classroom progress
  • Maintain and ensure HIPAA confidentiality of records (daily)

Qualifications: Describe the skills, knowledge and abilities required. Include minimum educational and experience requirements and preferences. 
  • Bachelor’s degree required; Master’s degree in Education preferred. 
  • Minimum of three years of experience teaching computer/digital literacy/skills.
  • Minimum of three years of experience teaching English to immigrant community 
  • Ability and interest in working with diverse populations. 
  • Knowledge of principles and practices related to adult literacy, preparing lesson plans, Microsoft Office, including Excel, and working knowledge of Microsoft Suite. 
  • Must be a self-starter, highly organized, patient and able to work well with others. 
  • Bilingual in Spanish preferred. 
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills. 
  • Frequently lifts and/or moves up to 30 pounds.

Digital Literacy (IC3) Instructor (part-time)
 
Brooklyn Public Library Adult Learning seeks a Digital Literacy (IC3) Instructor to facilitate the technology learning component of BPL’s Integrated English Literacy & Civics Education (IELCE) program.  This instructor will support English Language Learners completing a Digital Literacy (IC3) certification, thereby becoming more effective users of technology while improving English language proficiency. The Digital Literacy (IC3) classes meet in-person at one of the Brooklyn Public Library locations.

The Digital Literacy Instructor will teach the essential technology knowledge and vocabulary, and coach participants as they progress through the online Digital Literacy (IC3) curriculum (www.certiport.com/IC3) designed to prepare program participants to gain the technology skills to bolster achievement of their educational and career goals, and enhance clarity of the technology they engage with in daily life. Upon completion of each 8-week class cycle IC3 certification exams are conducted in person at the BPL Business and Career Center at the Central Library.

A key member of the IELCE program, the Digital Literacy (IC3) Instructor prepares participants for today’s workplace in the areas of computing fundamentals, online networks, and productivity applications. 

Instructor Responsibilities 
  • Teach interactive digital literacy classes to a diverse group of English Language Learners in computer fundamentals – hardware, software, the Internet, productivity applications, communication, and collaboration online, basic troubleshooting, the impact of the Internet on society
  • Develop quality, differentiated lessons for learners progressing through the IC3 certification  (https://certiport.pearsonvue.com/Certifications/IC3/Digital-Literacy-Certification/Overview) online curriculum, including basic through advanced digital tools and software programs; motivate and encourage participants to become digital literate 
  • Coach and encourage individual participants to reinforce skills by completing practice labs in online portal 
  • Provide foundational and supplemental support for participants’ conceptual knowledge of technology terminology and vocabulary
  • Prepare participants for (IC3) certification tests 
  • Collaborate with BPL’s IELCE (ESOL) teachers to facilitate instructional alignment
  • Participate in professional development initiatives

Instructor Qualifications 
  • Bachelor’s degree in education, technology, or related field 
  • Excellent communications skills, both written and oral
  • Excellent organizational skills; must be able to manage multiple tasks and priorities 
  • Ability to collaborate with diverse learners, including ability to provide differentiated, interactive instruction for digital skills for limited English language proficiency 
  • 2+ years’ experience teaching interactive digital literacy skills to classes and small groups of students encompassing the following domains of technology learning:
  • Computing fundamentals (hardware & software; operating systems, peripherals, troubleshooting)
  • Key applications for productivity (word processing, spreadsheets, communicating with presentations, databases)
  • Living Online (networks, the Internet, communication & collaboration online, the impact of the Internet on society
  • Excellent technology proficiency in the following areas:
  • Microsoft Windows, Mac OS, and Google Workspace  
  • MS Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint)
  • iOS and Android smartphones and tablets
  • Identifying and troubleshooting hardware and software problems
  • Knowledge of (IC3) Digital Literacy suite of products, a plus
  • Completion of IC3 certification required within the first semester of as Digital Literacy Instructor at BPL (8 weeks)  

The Digital Literacy (IC3) Instructor is a contract position. Salary rate: $35 per instructional hour, plus one hour preparation per class, per week.
Classes meet in person at the Central Library and the New Lots Library on the following days:
Wednesdays 6:00 – 8:00 PM
Fridays 10:00 AM-12:00 noon
Saturdays 10:00 AM-12:00 noon
