Literacy Coordinator F/T

Queens Community House (QCH) is a multi-site, multi-service settlement house that serves the diverse population of Queens through a broad network of programs and services for children and youth, adults, and families and older Adults. We are a modern interpretation of the traditional settlement house, bringing to our work current best practices, cost-effective management, innovative leadership and a passion for social and economic justice.
 
The Literacy Coordinator is responsible for identifying suitable age-appropriate curricula, helping staff create age and developmentally appropriate activities and lesson plans, and overseeing implementation of program activities. The Coordinator will also have a key role in coaching and developing staff to foster continuous quality improvement (e.g., through data-informed decision-making, effective supervision and professional development). 
 
Responsibilities:
  • Work with our 15 school and center-based sites to create and develop a coordinated family literacy approach and activities for QCH.
  • Work with QCH leadership to construct a long-term plan for fully embedding and sustaining literacy as an agency-wide focus.
  • Work with the citywide campaign to expand family literacy programming and establish partnerships with literacy organizations.
  • Work with and train the Education Specialists at each of the school and center-based sites to review all lesson plans and ensure proper alignment to Family Literacy best practices around family literacy and DOE standards.
  • Assist participants in actively achieving increased comprehension and retention of specific subject material, and improve academic skills in designated areas.
  • Support staff in execution of lesson plans, academic activities, and give constructive feedback. Provide coaching on classroom management and other areas.
  • Create and maintain a strength-based, youth-focused atmosphere that is consistent and sensitive to the needs of participants with learning, emotional, or behavioral differences.
 
Qualifications:
  • Master’s degree in Education; teaching credentials a plus.
  • Minimum of four (4) years of experience working with youth in a teaching, group work, or session facilitation capacity.
  • Knowledge of NYS Common Core Standards; experience in curriculum development and implementation in secondary education.
  • Exceptional coaching and problem solving skills that will support, develop, and evaluate staff.

SALARY: Mid-$50K range, commensurate with experience;

ESOL Instructor  P/T

​Part-Time Position:
Literacy Volunteers at Family Centers is seeking an ESL teacher to work with advanced Adult ESL students who are focused on improving their English and eager to transition into employment in the USA. The course focuses on and utilizes their educational training and transferrable skills. The curriculum provides students with many opportunities to practice their English by engaging them in reading, writing, speaking and listening activities focused on self-exploration of interests and skills, research of careers and educational opportunities, better understanding of the US workplace culture, along with preparation of resumes and interview practice.

Classes meet Wednesday and Thursday evenings in Stamford, 2 hours per evening and runs two semesters: October – January and February – June.

This is a paid position and requires a Connecticut Endorsement in Teaching English

Adult Education Professional Development Associate P/T or F/T

Adult Education Professional Development Associate:  The Literacy Assistance Center (LAC) seeks a dynamic adult educator to join its team of professional developers. The position will have a strong focus on literacy and workforce professional development. F/T, or P/T minimum 3 days per week.
 
This team member will primarily be responsible for assisting in the delivery of the literacy based trainings for ABE/HSE youth educators, implementing professional development activities on topics relevant to the current needs of youth workforce practitioners, covering assigned administrative duties and collaborating with other LAC professional development team members on assigned projects.
 
Reports to: The Numeracy & Youth Specialist
 
Responsibilities:
  • Design and lead workshops, webinars, cohorts and presentations for youth workforce and ABE/HSE practitioners
  • Develop curricular materials with and for workforce & ABE/HSE instructors, including materials that integrate academic skills development and career-focused instruction
  • Coordinate and manage professional development events for assigned contracts
  • Work with other LAC professional development team members to provide multi-content trainings and services
  • Learn and manage assigned contractual administrative duties
  • Other duties as assigned
Schedule: Typical M-F workday hours, with possibility of some evening hours
 
Qualifications:
  • Master’s degree in education or a related field
  • Minimum of five years of experience as an adult literacy instructor, manager, and/or staff developer
  • Experience and proficiency in contextualizing and integrating literacy instruction, with workforce development and career pathways
  • Experience delivering professional development workshops to adult educators
  • Expert knowledge of the College & Career Readiness Standards (CCRS) and the Employability Skills Framework or 21 Century Skills
  • Skilled user of Microsoft Office, particularly Word, Excel and PowerPoint
  • Familiarity with Google Docs and Google Sheets
  • Comfortable learning new technology skills
  • Strong organizational and communication skills
  • Ability to take initiative and be self-directed with strong problem-solving abilities
  • Enthusiasm and ability to work as part of a team
  • Enthusiasm about working onsite in adult education programs and willingness to travel throughout and outside of NYC
  • Ability to effectively represent and promote the work of the organization
  • Flexible and able to adapt to changing work environments and projects

Job Summary:
Rochdale Adult Learning Center seeks Part-Time Adult Basic Education/High School Equivalency Teachers to teach 4-5 subjects (Reading, Writing, Social Studies, Math and Science) to adult students in the Adult Education Program, and prepare students for the TASC exam. The position requires creative and dedicated instructors particularly experienced with teaching adults. We have immediate openings for the Fall 2019 Semester; Monday & Thursdays from 4-8pm.  Starting pay is $38 per hour.
Responsibilities:
  • Manage a classroom of up to 15-25 adults over the age of 18+.
  • Help students prepare for the TASC exam and improve their literacy level.
  • Develop daily lesson plans aligned with curriculum.
  • Review assessments tests and monitor students’ educational progress and liaise with staff members. Provide feedback and establish education plans
  • Report attendance for each session. 
  • Demonstrate ability to perform multiple tasks effectively in a fast-paced environment.
  • Proficient in using technology in the classroom.
  • Knowledge of MS Office and google drive. 
  • Provide tutoring services to students
Qualifications:
  • The ideal candidate will have a Bachelor’s Degree in Education and minimum 3+ years’ experience teaching Adult Basic Education.

Summary:
The International Center provides educational programming for newly arrived immigrants and refugees with the goal of improving learners’ English proficiency and communication skills. Programming includes daily ESOL classes at multiple proficiency levels, citizenship preparation classes, computer skills classes, individual conversation practice, and specialized off-site community programming for vulnerable communities throughout the city. The incumbent will develop, design, and deliver thoughtful
and effective classes for learners in daily ESOL and/or ESOL-Citizenship Preparation classes at the main Center and in community-based classes around the city.

Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Course Development and Instruction: In coordination with the Director of Programs, design and deliver year-long (July-June) ESOL courses. Create thorough and well-developed class curricula focusing on communicative competence for immigrants. In line with the current pedagogy, content will be meaningful and relevant to students’ self-sufficiency outside the classroom.  
  • Manage and Support Students: Hold weekly office hours for students to ensure they are working toward their identified goals. Work with other Center staff and additional CCCS services to address student needs outside the classroom. Conduct participant intake, assess language proficiency, and identify goals.Provide ongoing support to promote learning, engagement, and retention.  Work one-on-one with participants as needed. Conduct bi-monthly workshops based on student needs such as: study skills, financial literacy, higher education options, and job readiness.
  • Training and Staff Development: Assess professional development needs of other instructors and volunteers, and develop and deliver monthly or bi-monthly workshops accordingly.  Provide pedagogical support and act as a resource to other instructors and volunteers.
  • Monitoring and evaluation: track and analyze attendance, learner feedback, class surveys/needs assessments, qualitative narrative evaluation, and assist with reporting for grants/funders.
  • Additional Support: Provide general administrative and program support for the Center including assisting with student registration, pre- and post-testing students using BEST Plus, assisting with class scheduling, and maintaining student portfolios and files. Substitute as an open class instructor as needed.
Position Type and Expected Hours of Work:
This is a full-time position and work hours are generally Monday through Friday with evening hours required. Weekend hours may be required to meet student needs.

The Lehman College Adult Learning Center is seeking a dynamic part-time ABE/HSE Math Teacher to work with a diverse group of adult learners.  The class meets two evenings a week for three hours each day. The position begins in September 2019; starting salary is $32/hr. The Lehman ALC is currently hiring for evening classes.
 
Essential duties include:                                                                                  
  • Providing high-quality instruction to help students develop their conceptual understanding and math skills
  • Designing engaging lessons to help students foster an appreciation of math
  • Collaborating with staff and teachers to develop best teaching practices and enriching materials
  • Reviewing and communicating class progress with both staff and students
  • Actively partaking in in-house teacher meetings and citywide professional development
  • Maintaining class attendance and communicating with students about program participation issues
  • Participating in student orientations and program-wide events and activities

Classes are afternoon and evening in Jackson Heights.
Requirements: BA, 3 yrs. ESOL teaching experience, preferably teaching adults. Must be creative, organized, and committed to thematic instruction and learner-centered, participatory education; able to speak some Spanish with students, sense of humor, good team player, tech savvy and BEST Plus certification.
