Reporting to the Director of Education Programs, the Assistant Director oversees day-to-day operational aspects of Adult Education Programs, which includes two principal programs: Adult Learning Center, providing ESOL, BE and High School Equivalency preparation to adult learners, and the CUNY Language Immersion Program (CLIP) offering college preparation to CUNY-accepted ESOL students. The position involves two major areas of responsibility: organizational and instructional. The first includes scheduling classes; overseeing student intake, testing and placement; and managing the student data and reporting system. The second includes working with teachers to ensure quality instruction within the CUNY content-based approach to adult education. The Assistant Director provides support and carries out related tasks as instructed by the Director.
Responsibilities include:
- Overseeing and coordinating student intake, registration, testing, placement, class scheduling, and related program activities
- Assisting instructors and counselors with student management
- Working with instructors to develop, select and implement effective content-based curricula
- Identifying staff development needs and overseeing the provision of staff development
- Managing student database and supervising data collection, entry and update
- Preparing reports for funders and assisting in developing proposals
- Acting as a liaison to establish and strengthen partnerships in support of education programs
- Assisting the Director of Education Programs in hiring and supervision of staff, program development and planning, and other aspects of program management, as needed
- Flexibility to work evenings and some Saturday hours
Qualifications:
- BA in education or related field; MA preferred
- At least three years in program administration, preferably in a grant-funded program
- Relevant teaching experience in adult basic education or GED preparation programs
- Experience with thematic, content-based curricula
- Ability to work with a computerized database, spreadsheets, e-mail and the Internet
- Excellent writing and oral communication skills
- Well organized; able to prioritize and delegate responsibility
- Ability to juggle multiple tasks, be flexible, creative, resourceful and able to work as part of a team
Salary range: $55,000 - $62,000, depending on experience and qualifications
