Bilingual (Spanish) Case Manager – St. Nicks Alliance Workforce Development
 
St. Nicks Alliance‘s Workforce Development division provides comprehensive workforce services leading to employment and a career ladder for unemployed and under-employed community residents.  We are currently seeking a Bilingual (Spanish) Case Manager for our Adult Education Program.  This position will be conducting assessments for individuals who need help and resources achieving educational (ESOL, HSE and ABE) goals and opportunity for financial stability. 
Duties Include:
  • Administer one on one-assessment interviews for each new participant on case load, assessing participants education and work history, need for support services, career preferences and barriers to employment.   
  • Ensure that participant’s folders are complete including copies of identification documents and case notes.
  • Support, monitor, and follow up on participant’s attendance in education classes and other related activities.
  • Ensure ETO, Capricorn, and other in-house database systems are updated.
  • Perform other tasks (i.e. graduation ceremonies, company-wide special events, etc)  in support of St. Nicks Alliance as directed.
 Qualifications: 
  • Bachelor’s degree in Social Work or related field or 3 years experience in social service organization
  • Must be bilingual (Spanish, English)
  • Able to work flex schedule to include some evenings

ESOL Instructor (Spanish proficient) P/T

Current Openings: Make the Road New York's Adult Literacy Team is seeking an experienced, bilingual/Spanish proficient ESOL instructor committed to social justice for an intensive part-time position at our our Jackson Heights, Queens community center for our April-June cycle (and potentially for work again beginning in September, depending upon budget.) Our current instructor can't continue to work this schedule for personal reasons and we're seeking a replacement.

The instructor will teach ESOL as well as do class planning, materials creation, individualized follow up with students, and some meetings and professional development.

Strongly Preferred: Teaching Certification or Masters in TESOL; experience working in community based social justice organizations; interest in collaboration and professional development with team members.

Required: BA, at least 3 yrs. experience teaching ESOL to adults & multiple ESOL level classes. Must be creative, organized, and committed to thematic instruction and learner-centered, participatory education; must be able to speak some Spanish with students outside of class if not occasionally within class; Sense of humor/good team player a plus. Excellent computer skills, BEST Plus certification.

Class Schedules:
Classes will run from early April (wk of 4/11) thru the end of June 2016 with the following schedules:
Days per week, Time, Total hours per week (including prep, mtgs, calls to students), BEST Plus Level:
Monday - Thursdays, 6-8 pm, High Intermediate
Monday - Thursdays, 8-10 pm, Low Intermediate
24.5 hrs, (16 teaching hrs, 8 prep, .5 for mtgs and communication with students)+ on average 1 hr wk for meetings- depending on the week
 
Note: If you can only teach 8-10pm we will consider your application as well.
Salary Information: Starting compensation is based on a scale set by a democratically-elected personnel committee and will depend on factors such as experience and education. Typically the hourly rate is in the $20's but you're paid for prep hours so it comes out on par with other community based salary rates.

  • Plan, prepare and deliver lessons to Spanish –speaking Pre-HSE students, preparing to take the TASC in Spanish.
  • Grade daily classwork and homework assignments and give appropriate feedback.
  • Maintain required records of pupil progress and development.
  • Research new topic areas and maintain up-to-date subject knowledge.
  • Write new curriculum materials.
  • Select and utilize a range of different learning resources and equipment.
  • Monitor student performance on a regular basis throughout the term.
  • Prepare students for TASC practice tests and administer the Readiness tests. 
  • Manage Students' classroom behavior.
  • Participate in staff development.
  • Participate in departmental meetings. 
  • Counsel and support students one-on-one through academic or personal difficulties. 
  • Liaison with other agency professionals in monitoring students' attendance and academic and job readiness progress.

Mercy Center provides a range of programs and services to our participants, most of whom are immigrants and almost two-thirds of whom survive on annual household incomes of less than $15,000.

Reports to Director of Adult Education and Workforce Development

Job description
Under the direct supervision of the Director of Adult Education & Workforce Development, the Job Developer will provide a variety of employment services to include: seeking job placement opportunities for Mercy Center participants; recruiting employers; assessing employment needs of Mercy Center participants; developing employment training opportunities; and linking participants to appropriate educational, vocational, and social service programs to increase employability. The job developer will provide a variety of administrative functions including but is not limited to: filing various materials for inclusion in participant records; inputting participant records in Mercy Center's data base, producing a variety of reports and documents; and completing necessary forms. The job developer will also teach a Job Readiness course for students wishing to obtain their National Work Readiness Credential and be responsible for the computer skills program. The incumbent will work two evenings a week and occasional weekend hours to accommodate participant needs.

Duties and responsibilities
  • Teach job readiness classes for students seeking to obtain the National Work Readiness Credential; 
  • Develop and maintain positive community business relationships for the purpose of guiding participants to gainful employment and meaningful advancement; 
  • Provide career counseling, evaluation, skills training/ assessment, job readiness training and other activities related to employment transition and job placement; 
  • Implement participant centered employment related goals and objectives; 
  • Maintain cooperative working relationships with vocational programs and other referral sources; 
  • Refer participants to potential employers for consideration for job openings and provide consistent follow-up to employers; 
  • Track employment placement outcomes and retention for program participants; 
  • Oversee enrollment in computer literacy classes and be responsible for recruitment of volunteer teacher; 
  • Assure monitoring and documentation of each participant's progress by developing and maintaining professional and timely progress reports that track each participant's employment, individual support plan goals, licensing/ certification and other requirements; 
  • Participate in staff meetings and team meetings; 
  • Conduct participant intake for potential job readiness and computer participants; 
  • Prepare resumes; 
  • Develop job search strategies and tactics; 
  • Prepare job candidates for interviewing; 
  • Coordinating occupational trainings, conduct pre screenings; 
  • Conduct extensive outreach to potential employers to market candidates and increase pool of employers, increase job bank listings, and develop new job site; 
  • Maintain regular contact with employers to monitor employment satisfaction and to suggest accommodation of requirements for hard-to-fill positions; 
  • Maintain up-to-date records on employer outreach efforts for tracking and follow up and submit written reports as required; 
  • Perform other job related duties as assigned by the supervisor.

Administrative Assistant-Summer 

Summary of Position: The program assistant is responsible for providing administrative support to the deputy and/or program director.   The program assistant will attend weekly individual and group supervision meetings, assist program managers with data analysis, complete clerical tasks, attend conferences/trainings as needed.

Summary of the Agency: The Coalition for Hispanic Family Services is a multi-service agency serving children and families of North Brooklyn.  These include foster care, adoption, youth development, primary health care, mental health, HIV/AIDS case management, community health education and outreach, in-service internships and after school education.
Duties:
  • Act as the first line of communication between Cornerstone & the community at large.  Respond to telephone inquiries, e-mails, and any written communication as directed. 
  • Type memos, correspondence, reports, and minutes for most meetings. 
  • Organize documents for all contracts and DOH requirements as directed
  • Prepare admission applications, collect and review all applications, and assist data clerk with application entry.
  • Assist Data Analyst and Program Managers in maintaining participant database including creation of attendance sheets for daily activities as well as onetime events

  • All responsibilities related to ordering supplies for programming through operations following correct policy and procedure as directed.
  • Maintaining Directors Calendar and Program Calendar
  • Participate in all trainings relevant to program and position
  • Order and maintain rosters for school foods snack, lunch and dinner programs.
  • Serve as Health Director
Qualifications: 

  • College degree or comparable experience required.  
  • Must be highly organized and detail oriented with strong ability to multitask.
  • Must be highly computer literate, and proficient in Microsoft Office with concentrated strength in Microsoft Excel.  
  • Interest in Community Development and Youth Development.  
  • Occasional flexible schedule is required.  
  • Bilingual Spanish is required.

St. Nicks Alliance Workforce Development in Brooklyn has an immediate opening for a dynamic, part-time instructor for High School Equivalency (HSE) preparation in Spanish.  Instructor must be committed to helping our participants achieve educational gains. 

Responsibilities include:

Language Skills:

Two Bilingual ESOL/Citizenship Preparation Teachers (P/T)

Two PT BILINGUAL ESOL/Citizenship Preparation TEACHERS needed for two temporary positions Jan-June 2015 in Jackson Heights, Queens, to teach a Bilingual ESOL/Citizenship Preparation classes for low intermediate or more advanced speakers of English

Description: these positions will be temporary to replace a staff member who will be on leave between Jan - June 2015. The 4 classes taught will target residents from around the Jackson Heights, Queens neighborhood who need to develop the English language skills necessary to pass their Naturalization exams. The classes will use ESOL techniques to help students develop the reading, writing, speaking and listening skills necessary for their exams, and for civic engagement both as residents and future citizens.

The instructor will use core texts and materials provided by USCIS and compliment them with a variety of ESOL and EL-civics texts.  Attention to 4 skills, to thematic instruction, cooperative learning, and integration of technology when possible, is expected. The teacher will tailor existing materials to the needs of their students and will use Spanish very occasionally to assist with student comprehension when necessary. Additionally, the teacher is expected to take responsibility for basic administrative duties such as attendance tracking, follow up calls, and some 1 on1 conferencing and surveying to track educational progress as well as to assure that students are connected with support services as needed.

Requirements:
Bilingual Spanish/English, experience teaching ESOL at multiple levels, masters or certification in ESOL instruction strongly preferred, BEST Plus certified, excellent organizational skills, experience teaching in social-justice focused community-based organizations, willingness to participate in brief bi-weekly meetings with program Director either in person or via phone, willingness to call students regularly re: class and attendance issues.

Class schedule:
These temporary positions will take over classes starting in January, but we would like anyone we hire to plan to work a couple of hours in December to shadow and plan with the teacher they’ll be temporarily replacing.  There are 4 classes--- we are hoping to have two teachers teach two classes each.

 M/W 6-9 in Q, T/Th 6-9 in Q & Saturdays: 9-1 & 1:30-5:30 in Queens.   
•      For a teacher taking the2 night classes you’ll be paid for about 20hrs/wk
•      For a teacher taking the 2 Sat classes you’ll be paid for about 14 hrs/wk.
•      If 2 teachers each take a pm and a Sat class you’d each be paid about 17 hrs/wk. 
 
Pay: Starting compensation is based on a scale set by a democratically-elected personnel committee and will depend on factors such as experience and education.  (Average hourly rates for PT instructors run between $20-25 an hour depending on experience, but teachers are paid for prep and meetings on top of teaching time so the rates end up being fairly comparable to other CBO based classes.)
