Adult Basic Education (ABE) and High School Equivalency (HSE) Instructors
COJO Flatbush is a non-profit social service agency ready to respond to the concerns and needs of our community.  

The Adult Education Program at COJO serves adults and young adults over the age of 16 with the goal of preparing students to pass the General Educational Development (GED) as well as other Workplace Readiness Skills.

Work Location: Brooklyn/Midwood
Job Type: Part-time

Schedule:
  • Morning 10am-1pm
  • Evening 6pm-10pm
  • Sunday 10am-1:30pm and 2pm-5:30pm

Responsibilities: 
  • The ABE & HSE Instructor will work with incoming and current students to give them the necessary skills and tools to succeed in preparing and passing their GED test¬
  • Maintain timely and complete documentation including attendance, individual case notes, lesson plans, and other reports as prescribed by Program Director
  • Uphold a classroom conducive to learning, and engage students with quality interaction
  • Establish clear expectations for student achievement, participation, and assessments
  • Implement quality instructional practices to encourage student participation and retention
  • Encourage student accountability, conduct regular assessments to determine advancement, and provide student feedback and support
  • Participate in required meetings and training
  • Other related duties as assigned
Qualifications:
  • Bachelor’s Degree required: Master’s Degree in education preferred
  • Minimum two years’ experience teaching ABE/HSE preferred
  • Ability to engage a diverse population including adult learners and young adults
  • Knowledge of ABE, HSE curricula, and TABE and GED testing requirements
  • Ability to teach all subjects (reading/language, math, science, social studies and writing)
  • Ability to integrate technology into lessons
  • Demonstrate initiative, creativity, flexibility, and follow-through
  • Excellent communication, interpersonal, and organizational skills
  • Ability to assess differences in learning styles and tailor instruction plans for the needs of students
  • Understanding of workforce development landscape and how to incorporate into curriculum a plus

Position Summary: 
NYU Langone Family Heath Center’s Community Empowerment Program is a youth and adult education program that provides classes in ESOL, Adult Basic Education, High School Equivalency (GED) preparation and workforce development. The primary role of the teacher is to design and implement Adult Basic Education classes to prepare students for the High School Equivalency (GED) preparation class. The classes will be held in community settings.

Minimum Qualifications:
At least one year providing instruction (teaching or tutoring) to adults or adolescents and Bachelor's degree

Hot Bread Kitchen seeks a part-time  ESOL instructor to provide contextualized lessons to members enrolled in the Bridge (Introductory ESOL for the Culinary Workforce) and Culinary Training programs and help them achieve their career goals. Our ESOL classes focus on developing English language skills for the culinary workforce and embrace translanguaging pedagogy. The ESOL instructor will report to the Bridge Program Manager.
 
Key Responsibilities
  • Provide contextualized and differentiated ESOL instruction for members enrolled in our programs
  • Implement and administer the Best Plus test
  • Document attendance and progress

  • Knowledge of Google Classroom and Zoom proficiency; as well as,

PT Adult Education Career Counselor, RiseBoro Community Partnership 
 
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES 
  • Provide career development and job search counseling to adult literacy students in both individual and group settings. 
  • Conduct an initial education and career plan, then provide ongoing support for each student. 
  • Ensure that student progress is being tracked and properly documented.  
  • Assist students in registering for the Department of Labor JobZone website as well as conducting other job search and placement activities. 
  • Collaborate with the technology instructor to ensure that each student is assisted in the creation of a resume and general cover letter. 
  • Maintain students’ portfolio. 
  • Invite guest speakers from different career and education fields to speak with students about career options. 
  • Meet with Program Director and Program Coordinator on a regular basis to discuss students’ progress and document tracking performance data. 
  • Refer participants internally or externally for support services as needed to address their specific needs and follow-up to ensure services are being offered. 
  • Work with student and partners to secure milestone verifications. 
  • Complete other assignments as directed by Program Coordinator and Program Director. 
  • ** During the months of July and August, contingent on the availability of funds, the Career Counselor will transition to a position within the Education Division that is comparable in duties and responsibilities. 
COMPETENCIE 
  • Strong verbal and written communications skills 
  • Working knowledge of workforce development, career counseling and/or adult education preferred 
  • Proficiency if Microsoft Office software, particularly Word and Excel 
  • Willing to go above and beyond program mandates for the benefit of the student

​P/T ESOL Instructor
Adult English Language and Literacy (AELL) is the direct service provider of ESOL and adult literacy instruction for the New York Public Library.  They use professional teachers to offer free instruction to adult patrons in reading, writing, speaking and listening from a 0 to 8th grade level. Through formal classes in language and literacy, as well as elective offerings such as English conversation and citizenship preparation groups, AELL has taken on the charge to expand ESOL programming in the Library through both in-person and online instruction.

Key Responsibilities:

Working with the Associate Director and the Hub Manager, hourly instructors will:
  • Teach ESOL classes that promote English language proficiency for students assessed at NRS levels 1-6
  • Follow the prescribed curriculum in a communicative language  teaching environment during class-time.
  • Instruct adult ESOL students in classes and learning experiences which will lead to the achievement of their educational and personal goals.
  • Assist in the managed enrollment process to recruit and maintain students and student records
  • Maintain daily attendance records
  • Prepare weekly lesson plans for each session based on the curriculum.

Skills Knowledge & Expertise
  • Bachelor’s degree required, with training and/or experience in ESOL
  • Experience teaching adults both in-person and online
  • Strong interpersonal skills. Ability to work well with a variety of people, in a multicultural setting, involving a variety of team situations
  • Experience administering standardized assessments
  • Successfully demonstrated knowledge of technology-assisted learning, instructional software, video, audio and distance learning

P/T Adult Education Coordinator with Community Impact at Columbia University. This is a temporary, 6-month position, 20 hours/week: Monday-Thursday 3:30pm-8:30pm.
 
Basic Duties and Functions  Join the staff at Community Impact at Columbia University as a part-time Adult Ed Coordinator to help coordinate our evening GED and ESOL programs. These programs provide free classes as well as a full range of academic offerings and support services designed to help neighborhood adults improve their English and/or achieve their HSE diploma, enroll in college, and obtain employment.
 
Duties include:
  • Coordinate ESOL/GED participant recruitment, enrollment, and class placement
  • Administer pre and post tests to measure participant benchmarks and progress
  • Supervise Columbia University student staff and volunteers
  • Track participant attendance and performance
  • Initiate and nurture relationships with community organizations and University
  • departments to facilitate participant, volunteer, and work-study recruitment
  • Assist teachers with lesson plans and classroom management
  • Connect participants with wrap around services
  • Plan, organize and deliver participant orientation sessions and completion ceremonies
  • Assist with grant management including requirements for enrollment and outcomes
  • Attend required adult education training workshops
 
Qualifications:
Bachelor’s degree with two years minimum experience in adult education or a related field required. Prior experience in program management, oversight of government grants and staff supervision preferred. Must be proficient in Microsoft Office Suite, have excellent oral and written communication skills, and be able to manage multiple tasks. Salary range of $30-34/per hour, commensurate with experience.
