ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Provide instruction to students enrolled in Spanish HSE classes
  • Prepare weekly lesson plans that incorporate the use of computer-based activities and submit to Program Coordinator at the end of each month
  • Maintain students’ portfolios
  • Administer assessments regularly to all students to track their progress
  • Assign student’s interactive assignments using online resources
  • Meet with Program Director / Program Coordinator on a monthly to discuss participants’ progress
  • Refer participants internally for support services as needed and follow-up to ensure services are being offered
  • Attend a minimum of 18 hours of trainings/workshops/professional development on-site or using computer-based webinars
  • Attend staff development meetings monthly to receive assistance with computer-based lessons plans, computer-based activities for classroom usage, utilizing laptops and smart-boards in the classroom

COMPETENCIES

​Program Description:
The Education Center provides a wide range of adult education services to the Brooklyn community. Our offerings include ESL classes, GED preparation courses, and language-supported vocational training. Additionally, the Education Center operates a Family Welcome Center, where we provide case management, wrap-around services, workforce development programming, and regular community workshops and events. Many of our students speak Spanish, Arabic, or Chinese as their first language.

Position Description:
The GED Instructor will be responsible for teaching GED preparation classes to adults aged 17 and older. The role involves teaching math at two levels; one lower-level math class and one higher-level math class.

Responsibilities:
  • Prepare students for the GED exam with instruction in math
  • Prepare and follow a detailed curriculum
  • Take daily attendance and collect examples of student work
  • Work collaboratively with program staff to identify and address student needs
  • Administer pre-tests and post-tests using TABE
  • Attend professional development training and seek opportunities to further develop a teaching practice
  • Other duties as assigned

Pre-GED Spanish Instructor PT

Under the supervision of the Director of the Adult Education Pre-College Programs, the Spanish Pre-HSE Instructor will provide basic education instruction (pre-high school equivalency preparation) in Spanish at LaGuardia Community College for students with low reading and math skills, who are not eligible for the HSE class. Classes are offered on Mondays (remote), Tuesdays (in person), and Thursdays (in person) from 6pm-9pm, beginning September 2025.

THE OPPORTUNITY 

Hot Bread Kitchen is seeking a dedicated instructor to teach a contextualized Culinary ESOL (English for Speakers of Other Languages) curriculum as part of our 6-week Culinary Career Pathways for New New Yorkers program. This course is designed to equip participants—primarily native Spanish speakers—with the English language skills necessary to thrive in both Hot Bread Kitchen’s culinary training and in future roles in the food industry.

The ESOL curriculum focuses on building English proficiency through the lens of culinary work, with an emphasis on creating a culturally and socially responsive learning environment. The instructor will play a key role in fostering an ecosystem of support that respects and reflects the backgrounds of our members, while also preparing them for meaningful careers in the culinary field.

Key Responsibilities
  • Implementing HBK ESOL curriculum and lesson plans, provide contextualized and differentiated ESOL instruction for approximately 25 students.
  • Develop activities to supplement existing curriculum.
  • Provide support to supplement NYC Food Protection course.
  • Document attendance and student’s progress.
  • Attend weekly meetings with program staff to review student progress and participation.
  • Provide one-on-one support to students, as needed.
  • Use allotted administrative hours to prepare for classes.

    • 25 hours of additional prep time  (approx. 4 hrs/week)
  • Classes are held in-person at Manny Cantor Center in the Lower East Side

Location and hours 
This position requires regular in-person attendance, 5 days a week, at Manny Cantor Center in the Lower East Side of Manhattan as well as occasional attendance at our headquarters in Chelsea Market . Class hours are 1:45-4:45 pm, five days per week for a six-week period, with the need for some flexibility in work hours.

Compensation (includes teaching and preparation time)
This is a 6-week position (approximately 15 teaching hours and 4 prep hours per week). The compensation will be $45-55 an hour and is commensurate with experience. This is a temporary position with some eligibility for benefits including paid prenatal leave, sick leave, and short-term disability.

Overview: As part of our Workforce Development Program, ACT launched the Healthcare Support Career Accelerator (HSCA), an initiative designed to address career stagnation among African immigrants in healthcare support roles and create pathways to equitable job opportunities within the healthcare industry.

The HSCA program focuses on equipping participants with the English language skills necessary to pursue vocational training in healthcare. Through healthcare contextualized language instruction, participants develop the skills needed to successfully enroll in and succeed in vocational healthcare certification courses.

Position Description: ACT is seeking an experienced ESL Instructor to teach two consecutive cohorts of adult learners in the Healthcare Support Career Accelerator (HSCA) program. The instructor will provide a combination of in-person and virtual instruction over two 3.5-month terms in 2025.

Class Schedule:
Two in-person sessions per week (3 hours each)
One virtual session per week (2 hours)
Course Duration: 14 weeks (3.5 months) per cohort

Key responsibilities include: 
  • Deliver ESL instruction in reading, writing, grammar, and math using the provided curriculum.
  • Design customized lesson plans to meet student needs, ensuring alignment with program goals.
  • Collaborate with the Workforce Programs team to maintain accurate records of student attendance and progress.
  • Assess student progress through formal and informal evaluations.
  • Adapt teaching strategies to enhance student engagement and retention.
  • Integrate technology and blended learning strategies into lessons.
  • Prepare students for standardized assessments and equip them with test-taking strategies.
Qualifications
  • A bachelor’s degree, preferably in Education or a related field. Relevant experience may be considered in place of a relevant degree.
  • Minimum of 4 years of experience teaching ESL to adult learners at intermediate to advanced English proficiency levels in group settings, including basic to intermediate math instruction.
  • Experience preparing adult learners for GED and college transition programs.
  • Strong classroom management skills with experience facilitating both large and small groups.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a fast-paced, dynamic environment.
  • Experience with exam preparation; familiarity with the TABE exam is preferred.
  • Proficiency in using technology for instruction, including virtual platforms.
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and oral.
  • Ability to foster a supportive, culturally responsive learning environment
  • Experience in GED College prep, higher level of ESOL experience (high-intermediate) + math.
  • Experience incorporating job-readiness-focused English instruction is a plus.

Under the supervision of the Director and Assistant Director of Education Programs, the HSE Instructor provides ELA & Math High School Equivalency instruction to evening students at the Adult Learning Center.  This includes instruction in reading, writing, science, social studies, and math content.  

Classes meet on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays from 6 - 9pm.

There are two openings: one beginning on March 4, 2025 with an additional position beginning on April 22, 2025.

There is the possibility of hiring separate instructors - one for the ELA portion and one for the Math portion of the class.  Wednesday evenings are math classes with ELA on Tuesdays &  Thursdays.
