ESOL Instructors P/T

PT Day or Evening ESOL Teacher (2 Positions Available)
Queens Community House (QCH) is a multi-site, multi-service settlement house that serves the diverse population of Queens with a broad network of programs and services for Children and Youth, Adults and Families, and Older Adults. We have 2 PT ESOL positions available for our DYCD-funded program.

Classes are in-person in Forest Hills, Queens, beginning September 2022. 
Schedule:  Day:  9:00am-11:30am, M-Thu, 1/2 hour paid prep a day.  Evening:  6:30-9:30PM, M-Thu, 1 hour paid prep a night. 
Hourly Rate:  $30/hour

​Responsibilities:
  • Prepare and teach contextualized, participatory, and interactive ESOL classes to a diverse set of adult immigrant students.
  • Create lessons that improve the student’s ability to speak, understand, read and write the English language, and lessons that provide relevant vocabulary and skills designed to improve the quality of life for the newest New Yorkers.   Classes should be student-centered, with an ongoing assessment of student needs and interests, and lessons should be created to reflect those interests, which often include employment, family, health, access to services, community, civics, etc. 
  • Responsible for taking monthly student progress notes, taking daily attendance and timely submission, maintaining accurate student records.
  • Participate in pre- and post- Best Plus 2.0 testing of applicants and current students.  
  • Participate in program improvement by:  1) bringing innovative teaching practices to the classroom and sharing them with colleagues 2) working on improvement of Adult Education curriculum 3) Leveraging innovative teaching practices (e.g. online teaching tools and apps), 4) giving feedback on processes and procedures created during tenure, 5) Create learning communities and networks by focusing on student-centered learning and activities focused on group work, and 6) creatively using the city as a classroom.
  • Maintain confidentiality in handling student information from DYCD Connect, and when receiving private information from students. 
  • Participate in activities to improve student recruitment and retention, such as online social media outreach, and translation of outreach materials.  
  • Attend required number of professional development hours as required by funder
    (DYCD requires 18 hours of staff development per fiscal year).
  • Responsible for management of own working hours, timely submission of timecards on ADP (online), and working with Director and administrative staff by making sure lessons plans are prepared during planned absence or in case of emergency or unplanned absence. 
  • Maintain communication with Program Coordinator about administrative issues, such as classroom scheduling issues, contacting students, and progress notes.
  • Other tasks will be assigned as needed.
Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s required.  Foreign credentials are acceptable.  Master’s a plus.
  • Minimum of two years of experience teaching adults.  Sensitivity to and understanding of immigrant and adult learner issues.
  • Highly organized, excellent written and verbal communication skills; high interpersonal skills with demonstrated ability to build and sustain relationships. High comfort level with using Email and Text as communication tools. 
  • Excellent time management skills and ability to meet deadlines, self-motivated, solution-oriented, and resourceful.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and use appropriate discretion when dealing with private information.
  • Familiarity with online teaching tools, such as Zoom, PowerPoint, YouTube, WhatsApp, online games for learning, Google Forms, etc.
  • Demonstrated experience in MS Office applications (Word, Excel, PowerPoint), Email, and Internet.
  • Best Plus 2.0 Certification preferred.
  • Bilingual English/Spanish or English/Russian verbal and written competencies a plus.
  • Must be able to teach in-person in our Forest Hills, Queens site.

ACE Grants Manager and Writer at LaGuardia Community College

General Description
Reporting to the Vice President for Adult and Continuing Education (ACE) and working closely with the Director of Grants Development, the Grant Manager and Writer is responsible for strategically pursuing funding opportunities that align with LaGuardia Community College’s mission and strategic goals. This position will primarily support grant-seeking activities within the division of Adult and Continuing Education, but may occasionally support other activities across the college.
Duties include:
  • Proactively monitoring federal, state, and city agencies for funding opportunities appropriate for the division of ACE and college workforce development initiatives;
  • Working with senior leadership and program directors to identify funding opportunities for priority projects;
  • Assisting with writing and editing grant proposals and identifying budget needs;
  • Preparing and/or reviewing proposal budgets to ensure compliance with CUNY, Research Foundation, LaGuardia and funder requirements;
  • Submitting grant proposals to funders on behalf of ACE and the college using a variety of online submission portals;
  • Providing training to divisional staff on sourcing funding opportunities, grant writing and proposal submission processes;
  • Managing the submission of interim and final reports to sponsors, as needed;
  • Gathering, analyzing and presenting data related to ACE programs and grant funding;
  • Maintain records and submit reports related to grant opportunities.
  • Developing a thorough understanding of ACE’s mission and strategic goals and translating that knowledge into compelling and competitive grant proposals;
  • Maintain positive relationships with funders and other stakeholders;
  • Ensuring that proposals submitted are in compliance with rules and regulations related to higher education grants, and meet the terms and conditions of the specific RFP;
  • Occasionally work with faculty and staff from other divisions to prepare and submit grant proposals;

Other Duties
  • Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications
Bachelor's degree and six years' related experience required. The ideal candidate is an experienced grant writer who is familiar with the national, state and local grant funding landscape in the fields of workforce development, job training, pre-college/bridge programming, adult/continuing education, and/or higher education.

Other Qualifications:
Working knowledge of allowable and unallowable costs for higher education grants. Excellent written and oral communication skills.  Highly motivated.  Creative thinking skills. Ability to collaborate and interact well with a variety of people and personalities. Knowledgeable about all aspects of creating and editing proposals and budget as well as funding regulations and cost principals for sponsored project.  Extremely well organized and detail oriented.  Ability to use independent judgment. Works well under pressure.

Experience writing and obtaining funding from workforce development grants is preferred.

Adult Literacy Instructor for Bridge to Health Careers Math Class

MRNY’s NYC based Adult Education team is seeking a highly motivated, compassionate and skilled math instructor to join our Bridge to Health Careers class team.  The math instructor will work 10 hrs/ week. The position will be based out of our Bushwick, Brooklyn location with some remote work. 

(4.5 of the 10 hours will be instructional- classes take place on Fridays,  & the rest will be for class prep, meetings, and student communication.)

And our Departments of Legal, Health & Support Services provides direct legal representation, case management, and facilitated enrollment into public health insurance programs, training, and strategic support for members and organizing campaigns. Our attorneys and advocates specialize in labor and employment law, public benefits, disability benefits, housing law, healthcare and health insurance access, immigration, public education, domestic violence, and LGBTQ (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender and Queer) civil rights issues.

*In addition to 4.5 hours of class time, the math instructor will be paid 5.5 hours of prep and meeting time for meetings with colleagues and students. 
Class Schedules/length of job:

Classes will begin 9/12. The instructor will be asked to start in later August.  The classes will run until the end of June 2023 and summer work time will be available after that if/as the instructor is interested.  

Instructor responsibilities include: 
  • Curricular design work- Hand in course outlines, unit and lesson plans and related materials in the requested format by the deadlines that are set and agreed to. Maintain all of that in the Google drive, and integrate certain thematic content and materials into lessons as required by funders or decided by the team  
  • Student Assessment- combine TABE initial assessments with original math assessments at the beginning of the cycle and continue to assess students in an intentional and structured way throughout the cycle
  • Instruction- Deliver content material in ways that take into account students’ levels and learning styles, the need to pace and scaffold information
  • Communication with and support of students - Call absent students who missed your class and document calls; make referrals to MRNY’s case manager as needed
  • Related admin/grant related tasks- in addition to tracking attendance, grading of samples of students’ work, and writing monthly progress notes for a portion of students in the class, as funders require
  • Participate in meetings and trainings- attend external professional development according to funders’ requirements, as well as 1 on 1 support meetings, team and staff meetings

Job Requirements:
  • Eligible to work in the US 
  • Full vaccination with an FDA approved COVID-19 vaccine prior to first day of employment
  • Bachelor’s Degree
  • Teaching Certification or Masters in math
  • Strong communication skills
  • Enough Spanish to communicate with students outside of class if not occasionally within class

Salary & Benefits
Starting salary is based on a scale set by a democratically elected personnel committee and will depend on factors such as experience and education. MRNY offers an excellent benefit package including access to health insurance, & 401K to staff with over 20 hrs a week, and generous paid vacation, sick, personal days and paid holidays. The salary range for this position would be between $45,099 -$61,859 if the position were FT and the hourly rate is between $25-30/hr depending on experience.

Please note, MRNY staff are currently working both remotely and in-person through 2022, though these classes will be delivered in person. The position will be based at our Brooklyn office and will continue to require a mix of remote non instructional work and in person instructional and assessment related work in 2023. Hybrid work schedules for the position which identify when work will be based in the office and when outside of the office will be created and then adjusted when needed in consultation with the supervisor of the person we hire.

ESOL Program Coordinator F/T

Reporting to the Director of Immigrant Services, the ESOL Program Coordinator will oversee the English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) program at Riis Settlement, ensuring the provision of high-quality English language instruction and support services to adult immigrants in Western Queens.

The Coordinator is responsible for leading and managing all aspects of program administration, including planning and overseeing all ESOL program activities, providing supervision and support to instructors and administrative staff, and ensuring that the program meets quarterly goals for enrollments, attendance, and learning outcomes.

The Coordinator must be able to work effectively with diverse immigrant populations, and ensure that the program serves the needs of the learners and the broader community.

We have a variety of classes opening up and ideally would like to hire teachers who can teach multiple classes with us for more total hours/week. SUMMARY
The Learning Support Specialist works as part of a Community Library team to provide direct public service. The Learning Support Specialist is responsible for delivering excellent customer service as well as routine administrative and clerical duties. Supports the Library’s mission, values and overall Strategic Plan.  Provides input to improve the customer experience as well as staff procedures and workflows. Provides assistance to customers in the use of self-service check in/out and multi-functional devices.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Provide stellar customer service (in person & via phone)
  • Provide our teachers with administrative support however necessary
  • Assist with administering pre-/post testing
  • Assist with registration week of each semester by facilitating the completion of student documents and finalizing process of student enrollment
  • Assist with follow-up with students about a variety of topics: absences, lateness, incomplete documents, and reminders, etc.
  • Assist with maintaining internal databases
  • Follow-up with instructional staff about professional development, submitting their monthly reports, lesson plans, and quarterly lesson overviews
  • Input student contact hours, pre-/posttest and student outcomes
  • Assist center manager as needed
