JOB DESCRIPTION FOR ASSOCIATE PROGRAM DIRECTOR-ESOL
The ESOL Associate Program Director will be responsible for the success and ongoing implementation of the program. The ESOL Associate Program Director will work closely with the Director of York College Learning Center (YCLC), who has overall administrative and financial responsibility for the program. The ESOL Associate Program Director must be able to juggle multiple tasks; be organized, flexible and resourceful; and be able to work as part of a team.
Responsibilities include:
  • Develop and support relationships with all Center staff to ensure smooth running of daily classroom operations for ESL & IELCE
  • Work with instructors to develop and implement effective contextualized, content-based curricula
  • Provide support to instructors and counselors to offer the highest quality service to students
  • Oversee and coordinate student intake, registration, testing, placement and promotions, class scheduling, and related program activities
  • Ensure that all record-keeping and data collection requirements are met;
  • Assist the YCLC Director in ensuring program is in compliance with funding regulations
  • Assist the YCLC Director in program development and planning, hiring staff, and other aspects of program management, as needed
  • Disseminate relevant, applicable information regarding the ESL Program to
  • Teachers and administrative assistant
  • Attend professional meetings and conferences as needed
  • Stay current with trends in adult education and the ebb and flow of funding streams
  • Oversee and resolve any concerns, conflicts, or problems with ESOL student population
  • Teach ESOL classes two days a week.
  • Monitor compliance of all tasks and responsibilities assigned to ESOL Instructors.
  • Arrange work schedule to accommodate being present during evening session classes.
  • Review data reports with administrative assistant and ensure that data is corrected when necessary
  • Meet weekly with YCLC’s Director to discuss ESL program
  • Recruit participants for classes
  • Attend community events
  • Conduct monthly meetings with ESOL team
  • Conduct quarterly meeting with external partners
  • Perform other duties as assigned

Qualifications:
  • Bachelor of Arts degree (Master’s degree, preferred)
  • Bilingual (Spanish or French)
  • Demonstrated skills in human relations, leadership and mentoring
  • At least 2 years supervisory experience and/or teaching
  • Best Plus 2.0 Certified
Salary Range:
$62,400 -$65,000
Weekly Hours:
4 day a week with exception for holidays (Monday thru Thursday; Summer, Fall, Winter and Spring) with 2 late nights.

PART TIME SPANISH Pre-HSE INSTRUCTOR POSITION

Under the supervision of the Director of the Adult Education Pre-College Programs, the Spanish Pre-HSE Instructor will provide basic education instruction (pre-high school equivalency preparation) in Spanish at LaGuardia Community College for students with low reading and math skills, who are not eligible for the HSE class. Hybrid classes are offered on Mondays, Tuesdays, and Thursdays from 6pm-9pm, beginning September 2023.

All instruction will be conducted in Spanish in person 2 days per week and remote 1 day per week with Zoom and utilizing asynchronous learning platforms such as Google Classroom.

Responsibilities include:
  • Create a student-centered, engaging learning environment,
  • Develop theme-based, contextualized lessons using both synchronous and asynchronous instruction in all subject areas (math, science, reading, writing & social studies) with lessons in basic level reading, writing and math
  • Assess student content knowledge and tailor instruction relevant to GED preparation.
  • Evaluate student progress and provide feedback, both formally and informally
  • Prepare students to move to the next level HSE class.
  • Administer required assessments, such as GED Ready exams.
  • Maintain attendance records and work collaboratively with the office staff and case managers on student participation and needs.

The Adult Basic Skills (ABS) Department in the Adult and Continuing Education Division at LaGuardia Community College/CUNY is seeking an experienced part-time Reading/Writing Instructor, who will teach a reading and writing course for high school equivalency (HSE) students preparing for the GED exam.

ABS is seeking a dynamic, hardworking educators who have experience teaching diverse adult, non-traditional high school equivalency populations at a variety of ABE levels, including HSE in preparation for the GED. Experience in delivering quality language arts instruction is required. The instructor will adapt student-centered and contextualized curricula designed to help adult students to develop their reading, writing and critical thinking skills, including the incorporation of technology and materials for differentiating instruction and informal needs assessments, as needed. The instructor will teach reading, writing, social studies, and science material.

We are seeking 2 instructors who will each teach a hybrid course, one which will meet on Mondays, Tuesdays, and Thursdays from 5:30pm-9:00pm for the evening session; the other will meet the Mondays, Tuesdays, and Thursdays in the morning from 9:30am-1pm. Classes will take place on-campus two days a week and remote one day a week.


Minimum Requirements: Bachelor of Arts/Science degree, plus at least three (3) years of teaching experience in adult education, secondary or post-secondary education classrooms
Position is part-time, beginning September 2023.
Schedule: 3 mornings or 3 evenings per week hybrid class—2 sessions in person and 1 remote.

LaGuardia Community College is seeking two part-time case managers for its ABS High School Equivalency preparation program for 19 hours per week. This involves some day and evening hours and an occasional Saturday.

Case Manager must be comfortable with addressing barriers that will prevent students from pursuing their goal. Case Manager must work closely with teachers and administrative staff to provide the necessary support for the students in our program. learner-centered, participatory lessons and a project-based approach.
We are seeking a qualified case manager who has experience working with adult students. BA/BS degree required in social work or related field, plus a minimum of 2-3 years of experience working with adults as a case manager. Bilingual (English/Spanish) preferred.

Primary Responsibilities include:
  • Providing high quality support services to students we serve in the program
  • Interviewing prospective students to discuss possible barriers
  • Identifying and addressing issues as childcare, housing, family illness, work schedule, time management, finance, and other obstacles preventing students to complete their course
  • Communicating with students regarding absenteeism
  • Motivating students to persist and succeed in the program
  • Developing and presenting workshops on how to study, test anxiety, time management, financial literacy, etc.

QUEENS PUBLIC LIBRARY
PART-TIME JOB DESCRIPTION

Queens Public Library - Jackson Heights branch is seeking a Part Time ESOL Instructor. 

The Queens Public Library at the Jackson Heights Adult Learning Center is a resource center for ESOL (English for Speakers of Other Languages) and ABE literacy students up to the HSE level.  The Center provides free classes with teachers for guided learning.  In addition to an extensive collection of books, multimedia audio/visual materials for use in or out of the Center, we also offer basic computer literacy training and small conversation and tutoring groups led by trained volunteers to help improve our students’ English proficiency skills.

Current Opening:  Queens Public Library at the Jackson Heights Adult Learning Center would like to hire a Part time ESOL instructor for our in-person classes and/or online classes.  

The hired candidate will also be paid for lesson planning, occasional required professional development, and staff meetings. Teachers are expected to help with attendance, as well as registration, post testing and re-enrollment at the end of each cycle. (Training on any of the related admin tasks will be provided as well regular support on curricular and student related issues/questions.)

We need a teacher for these ESOL classes: 
High Beginner Tuesday/Thursday 10-1
High Beginner Conversation Online class Tuesday 6-8

****Classes will run until the end of June 2023 and summer classes will be available after that, if and as teachers are interested.  

Teachers’ responsibilities
  • Lesson Planning : develop unit and lesson plans related materials. Maintain all of that in the Google Classroom and Google drive.
  • Student Assessment- conduct BEST Plus initial assessments. Pre-test at the beginning of the cycle and at the end of the cycle (Post-test). If not certified, be willing to attend Best Plus initial training. 
  • Instruction- Deliver content material in ways that consider students’ levels and learning styles, use different learning strategies and methods of instruction, balance all four objectives/skills + vocabulary development and grammar skill development. 
  • Technology - have knowledge in using a variety of platforms for virtual programs, and digital versions of materials for class instruction, as well as provide technical support to students
  • Communication with and support of students - Attend to students' needs and make referrals to case managers as needed. Collect a variety of resources to inform or refer students to programs provided by QPL or outside sources. 
  • Related admin tasks- support the center with student registration, student retention, and contacting students regarding absences, transfers. Other admin needs as needed.
  • Professional Development- attend teacher training and staff development webinars provided by QPL as well as external professional development according to funders’ requirements.

Strongly Preferred:  
  • Experience teaching English as a Second Language to adult learners
  • Experience teaching classes remotely
  • Available to teach one morning and one evening class
  • Bilingual English/Spanish

SUMMARY
The Part-Time Learning Support Specialist (LSS) works in Adult Learning divisions (Adult Learner Program, Young Adult Literacy Services, New Americans Program, Job & Business Academy and Digital Literacy) to provide direct public service to program participants and administrative support to programs. This position is responsible for delivering excellent customer service, assisting in classes to promote student learning and success as well as performing routine administrative and clerical duties. The Part-Time Learning Support Specialist supports the Library’s mission, values and overall strategic plan.  This position provides input to improve the customer experience as well as staff procedures and workflows.  Performs other duties as required.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
General Office and Administrative Support (50%)
  • Provides reception and administrative support to the ALP Divisions
  • Daily Operations: 
  • Center organization (follow policies and procedures) 
  • Ensure book/display cases are in order
  • Front Desk and Computer Lab Coverage 
  • Virtua (Basic Book / Patron Search)
  • General office and administrative tasks including but not limited to, answering phones, filing, scanning and faxing, preparing materials for mailings, distributes incoming mail
  • Manages office supplies including surveying the supply storage areas to ascertain what is needed and submits orders on a regular basis.
  • Creates and maintains student folders (assists with student file management for all classes) 
  • Maintains program files and records 
  • Reviews staff & volunteer timesheets for accuracy prior to supervisor’s approval. 
  • Follows-up with instructional staff about professional development requirements, submitting their monthly reports, lesson plans, and quarterly lesson overviews
  • Gather information for reports, enter data, and compiles reports.  Submits reports based on established deadlines.
  • Ensures that assigned clerical projects are carried out and completed in a timely manner. 
  • Shelves library materials and performs other tasks to keep the collections in order.

Classroom Assistance (20%)
  • Provides teachers with administrative support (prepares photocopies, sets up classroom)
  • Assists with Lesson Planning, administering assessment tests, and conducting orientations
  • Facilitates groups in teacher's absence and/or as needed and provides student mentoring 
  • Supports teachers in using appropriate tools to measure the outcomes of student learning
  • Assists in training of volunteer tutors and provides feedback to tutors (lesson topics, etc.)
  • Assists teachers in technology training workshops and digital learning tools

Database Management (ASISTS and other tools) (15%)
  • Enters and updates student records 
  • Monitors and tracks student attendance and test scores; follows-up with absences, lateness, incomplete documents, and reminders, etc.

Participant Intake and Support (15%)
  • Supports outreach to internal and external partners to promote services and recruit participants

  • Assists staff in preparing information session materials, room and event setup
  • Assists in the student intake, directs students through the registration process
