Adult Basic Skills (ABS) Program at LaGuardia Community College
LaGuardia Community College is seeking two part-time case managers for its ABS High School Equivalency preparation program for 19 hours per week. This involves some day and evening hours and an occasional Saturday.

Case Manager must be comfortable with addressing barriers that will prevent students from pursuing their goal. Case Manager must work closely with teachers and administrative staff to provide the necessary support for the students in our program. learner-centered, participatory lessons and a project-based approach.
We are seeking a qualified case manager who has experience working with adult students. BA/BS degree required in social work or related field, plus a minimum of 2-3 years of experience working with adults as a case manager. Bilingual (English/Spanish) preferred.

Primary Responsibilities include:
  • Providing high quality support services to students we serve in the program
  • Interviewing prospective students to discuss possible barriers
  • Identifying and addressing issues as childcare, housing, family illness, work schedule, time management, finance, and other obstacles preventing students to complete their course
  • Communicating with students regarding absenteeism
  • Motivating students to persist and succeed in the program
  • Developing and presenting workshops on how to study, test anxiety, time management, financial literacy, etc.

  • Conferencing students individually on their goals and next steps
  • Collaborating with the Career Development Center to assist students in applying to college

PART-TIME JOB DESCRIPTION

Queens Public Library - Jackson Heights branch is seeking a Part Time ESOL Instructor. 

The Queens Public Library at the Jackson Heights Adult Learning Center is a resource center for ESOL (English for Speakers of Other Languages) and ABE literacy students up to the HSE level.  The Center provides free classes with teachers for guided learning.  In addition to an extensive collection of books, multimedia audio/visual materials for use in or out of the Center, we also offer basic computer literacy training and small conversation and tutoring groups led by trained volunteers to help improve our students’ English proficiency skills.

Current Opening:  Queens Public Library at the Jackson Heights Adult Learning Center would like to hire a Part time ESOL instructor for our in-person classes and/or online classes.  

The hired candidate will also be paid for lesson planning, occasional required professional development, and staff meetings. Teachers are expected to help with attendance, as well as registration, post testing and re-enrollment at the end of each cycle. (Training on any of the related admin tasks will be provided as well regular support on curricular and student related issues/questions.)

Teachers’ responsibilities
  • Lesson Planning : develop unit and lesson plans related materials. Maintain all of that in the Google Classroom and Google drive.
  • Student Assessment- conduct BEST Plus initial assessments. Pre-test at the beginning of the cycle and at the end of the cycle (Post-test). If not certified, be willing to attend Best Plus initial training. 
  • Instruction- Deliver content material in ways that consider students’ levels and learning styles, use different learning strategies and methods of instruction, balance all four objectives/skills + vocabulary development and grammar skill development. 
  • Technology - have knowledge in using a variety of platforms for virtual programs, and digital versions of materials for class instruction, as well as provide technical support to students
  • Communication with and support of students - Attend to students' needs and make referrals to case managers as needed. Collect a variety of resources to inform or refer students to programs provided by QPL or outside sources. 
  • Related admin tasks- support the center with student registration, student retention, and contacting students regarding absences, transfers. Other admin needs as needed.
  • Professional Development- attend teacher training and staff development webinars provided by QPL as well as external professional development according to funders’ requirements.

SUMMARY
The Part-Time Learning Support Specialist (LSS) works in Adult Learning divisions (Adult Learner Program, Young Adult Literacy Services, New Americans Program, Job & Business Academy and Digital Literacy) to provide direct public service to program participants and administrative support to programs. This position is responsible for delivering excellent customer service, assisting in classes to promote student learning and success as well as performing routine administrative and clerical duties. The Part-Time Learning Support Specialist supports the Library’s mission, values and overall strategic plan.  This position provides input to improve the customer experience as well as staff procedures and workflows.  Performs other duties as required.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
General Office and Administrative Support (50%)
  • Provides reception and administrative support to the ALP Divisions
  • Daily Operations: 
  • Center organization (follow policies and procedures) 
  • Ensure book/display cases are in order
  • Front Desk and Computer Lab Coverage 
  • Virtua (Basic Book / Patron Search)

General Description
York College seeks an experienced, visionary, and resourceful professional to lead the largest adult language and literacy program within the City University of New York (CUNY). Reporting to the Executive Director of Government Relations and Strategic Initiatives, the director has wide latitude for developing and implementing York College Learning Center’s adult literacy programs, which include Adult Basic Education (ABE), High School Equivalency (HSE) preparation, English as a Second Language (ESL), Integrated English Literacy and Civics Education (IEL/CE), workforce development/readiness, educational case management, academic counseling, and referral services to our network of partners. The Learning Center at York College serves 1,000 students annually. The director is responsible to ensure all areas are accountable and meet the requirements as detailed in the funding award contracts.

Specific Responsibilities
  • Provide strong leadership and implement strategic planning that support collaboration, instructional excellence, innovation, professional development, and continuous improvement through program accountability
  • Develop grant-funded and private-sector proposals to maintain the Learning Center and expand its capacity in offering instructional and academic case-management services
  • Monitor the implementation of programs, including fiscal oversight and procurement

Adult and Immigrant Services offers English language classes to immigrant community members, assists in providing resources and benefits to those in vulnerable community members, provides free legal immigration consultations, engages with community members on public health initiatives and advocates alongside and on behalf of immigrants and low-income adults.

Sunnyside Community Services provides ESOL instruction to over 350 students annually. Our approach includes innovative virtual and in-person learning strategies, a whole-person approach allowing students to access services internally, and a commitment to social justice, diversity, equity, and conclusion. We have recently developed in-house curricula for beginning through intermediate proficiency levels and we have developed an English for specific purposes curriculum focused on health.

The Program Coordinator is responsible for program implementation and development in collaboration with the Assistant Director, ESOL. The Program Coordinator will ensure the successful operation of ESOL programming to assist those who lack proficiency in English inside and outside of the classroom.
Position Responsibilities

Program Planning and Implementation
  • Assist in operation of ESOL programming including organizing in-person and virtual registration, orientation, and fieldtrips.
  • Assist in registration, conducting intake and pre/post test program participants.
  • Communicate with students regarding programming and other service needs.

PT Day or Evening ESOL Teacher (2 Positions Available)
Queens Community House (QCH) is a multi-site, multi-service settlement house that serves the diverse population of Queens with a broad network of programs and services for Children and Youth, Adults and Families, and Older Adults. We have 2 PT ESOL positions available for our DYCD-funded program.

Classes are in-person in Forest Hills, Queens, beginning September 2022. 
Schedule:  Day:  9:00am-11:30am, M-Thu, 1/2 hour paid prep a day.  Evening:  6:30-9:30PM, M-Thu, 1 hour paid prep a night. 
Hourly Rate:  $30/hour

​Responsibilities:
  • Prepare and teach contextualized, participatory, and interactive ESOL classes to a diverse set of adult immigrant students.
  • Create lessons that improve the student’s ability to speak, understand, read and write the English language, and lessons that provide relevant vocabulary and skills designed to improve the quality of life for the newest New Yorkers.   Classes should be student-centered, with an ongoing assessment of student needs and interests, and lessons should be created to reflect those interests, which often include employment, family, health, access to services, community, civics, etc. 
  • Responsible for taking monthly student progress notes, taking daily attendance and timely submission, maintaining accurate student records.
  • Participate in pre- and post- Best Plus 2.0 testing of applicants and current students.  
  • Participate in program improvement by:  1) bringing innovative teaching practices to the classroom and sharing them with colleagues 2) working on improvement of Adult Education curriculum 3) Leveraging innovative teaching practices (e.g. online teaching tools and apps), 4) giving feedback on processes and procedures created during tenure, 5) Create learning communities and networks by focusing on student-centered learning and activities focused on group work, and 6) creatively using the city as a classroom.
  • Maintain confidentiality in handling student information from DYCD Connect, and when receiving private information from students. 
  • Participate in activities to improve student recruitment and retention, such as online social media outreach, and translation of outreach materials.  
  • Attend required number of professional development hours as required by funder
    (DYCD requires 18 hours of staff development per fiscal year).
  • Responsible for management of own working hours, timely submission of timecards on ADP (online), and working with Director and administrative staff by making sure lessons plans are prepared during planned absence or in case of emergency or unplanned absence.

Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s required.  Foreign credentials are acceptable.  Master’s a plus.
  • Minimum of two years of experience teaching adults.  Sensitivity to and understanding of immigrant and adult learner issues.
  • Highly organized, excellent written and verbal communication skills; high interpersonal skills with demonstrated ability to build and sustain relationships. High comfort level with using Email and Text as communication tools. 
  • Excellent time management skills and ability to meet deadlines, self-motivated, solution-oriented, and resourceful.

ACE Grants Manager and Writer at LaGuardia Community College

General Description
Reporting to the Vice President for Adult and Continuing Education (ACE) and working closely with the Director of Grants Development, the Grant Manager and Writer is responsible for strategically pursuing funding opportunities that align with LaGuardia Community College’s mission and strategic goals. This position will primarily support grant-seeking activities within the division of Adult and Continuing Education, but may occasionally support other activities across the college.
Duties include:
  • Proactively monitoring federal, state, and city agencies for funding opportunities appropriate for the division of ACE and college workforce development initiatives;
  • Working with senior leadership and program directors to identify funding opportunities for priority projects;
  • Assisting with writing and editing grant proposals and identifying budget needs;
  • Preparing and/or reviewing proposal budgets to ensure compliance with CUNY, Research Foundation, LaGuardia and funder requirements;
  • Submitting grant proposals to funders on behalf of ACE and the college using a variety of online submission portals;
  • Providing training to divisional staff on sourcing funding opportunities, grant writing and proposal submission processes;
  • Managing the submission of interim and final reports to sponsors, as needed;
  • Gathering, analyzing and presenting data related to ACE programs and grant funding;
  • Maintain records and submit reports related to grant opportunities.
  • Developing a thorough understanding of ACE’s mission and strategic goals and translating that knowledge into compelling and competitive grant proposals;
  • Maintain positive relationships with funders and other stakeholders;
  • Ensuring that proposals submitted are in compliance with rules and regulations related to higher education grants, and meet the terms and conditions of the specific RFP;
  • Occasionally work with faculty and staff from other divisions to prepare and submit grant proposals;

Other Duties
  • Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications
Bachelor's degree and six years' related experience required. The ideal candidate is an experienced grant writer who is familiar with the national, state and local grant funding landscape in the fields of workforce development, job training, pre-college/bridge programming, adult/continuing education, and/or higher education.

Other Qualifications:
Working knowledge of allowable and unallowable costs for higher education grants. Excellent written and oral communication skills.  Highly motivated.  Creative thinking skills. Ability to collaborate and interact well with a variety of people and personalities. Knowledgeable about all aspects of creating and editing proposals and budget as well as funding regulations and cost principals for sponsored project.  Extremely well organized and detail oriented.  Ability to use independent judgment. Works well under pressure.

Experience writing and obtaining funding from workforce development grants is preferred.
