CUNY Start is an intensive program for incoming college students, who have earned either a high school or high school equivalency diploma, and need to increase their academic proficiency in reading, writing and mathematics prior to enrollment in college credit classes. Summer Start, based on the CUNY Start math curriculum and advisement model, is an intensive 8-week program for incoming CUNY students who want to increase their math proficiency before starting credit-bearing classes. Similar to CUNY Start, Summer Start, enrolls students who have been accepted to CUNY, but have not passed the math sections of the CUNY Assessment Tests.
The CUNY Start/Summer Start Cooperating Advisor is a paid training opportunity to learn and practice the CUNY Start approach to advising students who have significant remedial needs develop problem-solving and self-advocacy skills, plan their academic paths and learn how to navigate the college environment and access campus resources. In general, Continuing Education Teachers teach Continuing Education courses and perform related work. Under the supervision of the Program Director, the Cooperating Advisor serves as an apprentice to a campus Advisor, providing individual and group advisement, learning/teaching the CUNY Start Seminar curriculum, and assisting with the recruitment of new students.
Successful Cooperating Advisors emerge with a solid foundation in CUNY Start Advisement curriculum, and will be eligible to apply for future full-time positions at CUNY campuses in the following semester.
