POSITION SUMMARY
We are currently seeking an advanced-level instructor for our Adult Education Levels 6 and 7 Basic English (BE) class for the Fall 2022 semester. Classes will run in person from 9:00am to 3:30pm, September 10th to December 10th, 2022, with a one-hour break. There is a paid plenary during the lunch break.
The instructor is primarily responsible for designing a syllabus that suits advanced-level adult learners and includes some math instruction. We expect SPELL students after this class will be able to successfully apply to college or be able to begin matching the careers they had before immigrating to the United States. Therefore the ideal candidate will design instruction that will prepare advanced students for the workforce or placement in an academic program. The curriculum in this preparation includes some basic math instruction.
We are looking for a self-reflective teacher willing to provide high-quality face-to-face language instruction. The teacher should perform these duties in a way that exhibits cultural sensitivity and attention to individual student needs.
Other responsibilities include: developing and modifying curriculum around a theme, developing lesson plans; participating in weekly plenary meetings; keeping track of students' attendance; and working with the program's case managers/ social workers to help promote and track student success. The instructor will also be responsible for attending NY State-sponsored PD workshops throughout the semester. This position reports directly to the program manager.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
- An MA TESOL degree
- Experience working with “BE” or advanced-level language learners
- Experience teaching across content areas, such as working at the high school level with older students is an asset but not required
- The ideal candidate should demonstrate a commitment to the adult immigrant community
- Multilingual or Bi-lingual Spanish speakers are preferred, but not required
- Knowledge of Google Classroom is preferred but not required
