ESOL Instructor P/T

Position Title:  P/T Evening ESOL Teacher
Hours:  16 hours a week (6:30pm – 9:30pm plus one hour prep each night), Monday through Thursday
Hourly Rate:  $28/hour
Reports to:  Director of Adult Education

Queens Community House (QCH) is a multi-site, multi-service settlement house that serves the diverse population of Queens through a broad network of programs and services for Children and Youth, Adults and Families, and Older Adults. Responsibilities
  • Prepare and teach contextualized, participatory, and interactive English classes to a diverse set of adult immigrant students.  
  • Create lessons that improve the student’s ability to speak, understand, read and write the English language, and lessons that provide relevant vocabulary and skills designed to improve the quality of life for the newest New Yorkers.   Classes should be student-centered, with an ongoing assessment of student needs and interests, and lessons should be created to reflect those interests, which often include employment, family, health, access to services, community, civics, etc.  When required by funders, integration of specific topics must be documented.
  • Responsible for taking daily attendance, maintaining accurate student records, pre- and post- Best Plus testing, and progress notes, as required by funders.  
  • Participate in program improvement by:  1) bringing innovative teaching practices to the classroom and sharing them with colleagues 2) working on improvement of Adult Education curriculum 3) Leveraging technology use (laptops and smart phones) in the classroom, 4) giving feedback on processes and procedures created during the year, 5) Create learning communities and networks within each classroom by focusing on student-centered learning and activities focused on group work, and 6) creatively using the city as a “classroom” (e.g. field trips in museums)
  • Maintain confidentiality when it comes to the use of student information from ASISTS, and when receiving private information from students in the classroom. 
  • Participate in activities to improve student recruitment and retention, such as outreach in the classroom and on-line, or community outreach.  
  • Responsible for management of own working hours, timely submission of timesheets, and working with Director and administrative staff by making sure there are lessons plans prepared for the class for planned absence or in case of emergency or unplanned absence. 
  • Maintain communication with Program Coordinator about administrative issues, such as classroom scheduling issues, contacting students, and progress notes.
  • Other tasks will be assigned as needed.
Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s required.  Foreign credentials are acceptable.  Master’s a plus.
  • Minimum of two (2) years of experience teaching adults.
  • Highly organized, excellent written and verbal communication skills; high interpersonal skills with demonstrated ability to build and sustain relationships.
  • Excellent time management skills and ability to meet deadlines, self-motivated, solution-oriented, and resourceful.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and use appropriate discretion when dealing with private information.
  • Sensitivity to and understanding of immigrant and adult learner issues.
  • Demonstrated experience in Microsoft Office applications (Word, Excel), Email, and Internet.
  • Best Plus 2.0 Certification Required
  • Bilingual English/Spanish or English/Russian verbal and written competencies a plus.
