Organization: Minmahaw Higher Education Program (MHEP) is a non-profit, education organization. It operates in Mae Sot, on the Thai-Burma border, to educate young people from Burma with disadvantaged backgrounds. By providing an education which incorporates critical thinking and organizational skills, MHEP prepares students to take a high school equivalency exam so they can attain scholarships and gain entry to university. Although this is the direct aim of the program, the fundamental purpose is to promote higher education and support the new generation to play an active role in shaping their communities inside and outside Burma.
Position: MHEP offers a 12-month residential program for students with diverse educational backgrounds from various Burmese ethnic groups. The students will be chosen from refugee camps, migrant areas, and inside Burma. The syllabus covers English language and literature, academic reading and writing, mathematics, science (including chemistry, physics, biology), and social studies. All teaching is in English. Upon completing the course all students need to be able to pass the US GED (General Educational Development) exam, a high school equivalency test.
Responsibilities: Four hours of class (two for Social Studies and two for Science) per day, five days per week
Social Studies subjects include:
- World History (15%)
- American History (25%)
- Politics (25%)
- Economics (20%)
- Geography (15%)
Science topics include:
- Chemistry (25%)
- Physics (25%)
- Biology (30%)
- Earth Science (10%)
- Space Science (10%)
- Emphasis on problem solving skills including reading, critical thinking and the use of scientific concepts in real world situations
- Introduce the scientific method and the use of experimentation in science
- Demonstrate practically how science is instrumental in the world around us and how to apply the curriculum to everyday life
- Construct and facilitate student and teacher- led labs in all disciples of science
As the Social Studies and Science teacher, responsibilities extend beyond the topics taught to include the following:
- Contribute to the development and implementation of the Social Studies and Science curricula
- Conduct classes, workshops, and demonstrations to teach principles and techniques in Social Studies and Science
- Relate curricula to current events to encourage critical thinking and analysis
- Establish clear objectives for all weekly lesson plans, units, and projects for Social Studies and Science
- Maintain accurate and complete records of student progress.
- Coordinate with the other teachers to promote integration of program and delivery.
- Prepare and maintain educational materials and equipment
- Assist program coordinator with enforcing behavior and procedures for maintaining order among the students
- Plan and conduct activities for a balance program of instruction, demonstration, and work time that provides students with opportunities to observe, question, and investigate
- Observe and evaluate student's work to determine progress and make suggestions for improvement
- Being able to incorporate technology within the classroom.
- Provide coverage for other teachers as needed
- Involvement in all MHEP staff meetings
- Night study duty (which involves helping students during their study time) at MHEP at least once a week
- Participate in extra-curricular activities outside the school and outside regular hours, as determined by the coordinator
- Participation in the recruitment of students and staff for the 2015 - 2016 academic year along the Thai/ Burma boarder
The ideal candidate will have:
- A relevant university degree or two years work experience in the same area
- At least two years previous experience of teaching students English as a second language/English as a foreign language and/or teaching high school students preferred
- Strong teamwork and communication skills
- Ability to adapt to various situations and experiences in limited-resource, challenging environments
- Experience with curriculum building
- Experience, exposure to the Burmese refugee and migrant situation helpful
- Outgoing personality with interest in understanding other cultures
- Ability to work within a team as well as independently
- A CELTA/TEFL/TESOL certificate from a recognized institution preferred
