Mathematics Instructor - ABE/GED Part Time
The Lehman College Adult Learning Center is seeking a dynamic part-time ABE/HSE Math teacher to work with a diverse group of adult learners. The class meets for two evening sessions a week.

Essential duties include:                                                                                  
  • Providing high-quality instruction to help students develop their conceptual understanding and math skills
  • Designing engaging lessons to help students foster an appreciation of math
  • Collaborating with staff and teachers to develop best teaching practices and enriching materials

Lehman College ALC - Hiring Two P/T ABE/HSE Reading & Writing Teachers T-Th 9:30 am to 12:30 pm and T-Th 6 pm to 9 pm

The Lehman College Adult Learning Center is seeking a dynamic part-time ABE/HSE Reading & Writing Teacher to work with a diverse group of adult learners.  Each class meets for two sessions a week.

The Lehman College Adult Learning Center (ALC) is a teacher-led direct-service project of the Institute for Literacy Studies (ILS).  Our shared mission—advancing urban education—has deep significance for the schools, colleges, and community-based settings in our home borough of the Bronx.  Four interrelated core values inspire and infuse our work: commitments to human capacity, social justice, the power of democratic communities, and transformative work for all persons. 

We provide thoughtful, innovative instruction, individualized counseling, and a nurturing environment for learners aged 16 and older.  Students enter our program with the hope that the ALC’s key programs comprising free classes for Adult Basic Education (ABE), High School Equivalency (HSE), and English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL), including career and college readiness, can provide them with a meaningful pathway toward qualitatively better lives and economic self-sufficiency. Our classes embed adult learning in real-life contexts to ensure that everyone who comes through our door has the skills to get a foothold and compete in the modern workplace.

  • Actively partaking in internal teacher meetings and citywide professional development
  • Maintaining class attendance and communicating with students about program participation issues
  • Participating in new student orientations and program-wide events and activities
  • Conducting required assessments including TABE and GED Readiness exams when needed
  • Having a willingness to learn and become part of the ALC community of teachers and learners

The ABE/HSE instructor is responsible for teaching basic literacy up to high school level reading and writing alongside GED social studies concepts to young adult and adult learners enrolled in education classes (depending on class assignment). Classes will be taught hybrid. We offer both morning and evening classes. This is an in-person position. We offer morning (9-12) and evening (6-9) classes.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Develop and facilitate curriculum for ABE and HSE instruction based on educational and Common Core Standards.
  • Instruct beginning learners as they develop basic literacy concepts.
  • Provide literacy and social studies instruction to prepare students for the test to obtain their high school equivalency diploma, i.e., GED.

Position Summary: 
NYU Langone Family Heath Center’s Community Empowerment Program is a youth and adult education program that provides classes in ESOL, Adult Basic Education, High School Equivalency (GED) preparation and workforce development. The primary role of the teacher is to design and implement Adult Basic Education classes to prepare students for the High School Equivalency (GED) preparation class. Part time position
Hourly rate is $38.00/hour

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Effectively teach reading comprehension, standard English grammar, essay writing, math and test-taking skills to adult basic education students;
  • Responsible for creating curriculum and lesson plans;
  • Create engaging instructional strategies and lesson plans, integrating technology;
  • Provide instruction in math and /or literacy, including group instruction and one-on-one tutoring;
  • Evaluate student progress using standardized assessment tools and in-class quizzes;
  • Adapt teaching style and strategies to maximize student learning and retention;
  • Meet with Program Director / Program Coordinator on a regular basis to discuss progress of participants;
  • Maintain students portfolio;
  • Refer participants internally for support services as needed and follow-up to ensure services are being offered;
  • Complete other related assignments as directed by Program Director and program administrators.

COMPETENCIES
  • Two years teaching experience preferred;
  • Experience with curriculum development and lesson planning;
  • Must be comfortable with learner-centered, participatory lessons and a project-based approach;
  • Proficiency in MS Office Suite;
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills;
  • Must be able to create an engaging and welcoming learning environment;

  • Ability to understand the concepts of institutional and structural racism and bias and their impact on underserved and underrepresented communities;

Family Health Centers at NYU Langone is currently looking for an experienced Adult and Youth Educator to teach Basic Education and/or High School Equivalency (GED) Preparation classes in Red Hook, Brooklyn. We are looking for a dynamic, engaging educator who is passionate about supporting youth and adults succeed in meeting their educational and next steps goals.

Responsibilities
  • Develop and implement student centered curricula
  • Provide instruction in all major subjects
  • Ensure that lessons are logically sequenced, level appropriate, and address varying learning styles and needs.
  • Develop strategies and lesson plans that integrate job readiness, financial literacy, digital literacy and health literacy activities into curriculum.
  • Maintain a classroom atmosphere that is conducive to learning
  • Ensure that all students have opportunities to participate in lessons
  • Strives to maintain enrollment by coordinating outreach calls and communicating weekly with supervisor regarding enrollment needs
  • Ensure that students are pre tested and post tested on the TABE appropriately.
  • Accumulate, record, and report student data regarding participation, progress, and outcomes in a timely manner.
  • Work with support services staff to ensure that students' non-academic needs are met
  • Participate in required monthly staff meetings and Professional Development activities

Qualifications 
  • Bachelor of Arts 
  • Applicants with Adult Basic Education or high school teaching experience required. 
  • Applicants with experience working with youth and adult populations preferred 
  • Applicants with experience working in community settings preferred
