ABE Math Instructor P/T

MRNY hiring an Adult Basic Education (ABE) Math PT instructor for our Bridge to Health Careers Class
 
MRNY’s NYC based Adult Education team is seeking a highly motivated, compassionate and skilled math instructor to teach one 4.5 hr/wk class weekly in our Bushwick, Brooklyn location. (Class will be remote until probably after January 2022 if not later.)
 
Make the Road New York (MRNY) builds the power of Latino and working class communities to achieve dignity and justice through organizing, policy innovation, transformative education, and survival services. Make the Road New York operates neighborhood-based community centers in Bushwick, Brooklyn; Jackson Heights, Queens; Port Richmond, Staten Island; and Brentwood, Long Island. With a membership of 24,000 low-income New Yorkers, MRNY tackles the critical issues facing our community: workplace justice, tenants’ rights, immigrant civil rights, language-access, LGBTQ justice, public education, health care access, and immigration reform.
 
Make the Road New York  https://maketheroadny.org/ is a multi-service organization. Our Education Department offers English to Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL), citizenship preparation, health job training classes and in-school and after-school youth programs. Our Community Organizing Projects help New Yorkers to implement strategies to combat shared problems, and develop leadership and the capacity for civic participation. And our Departments of Legal, Health & Support Services provides direct legal representation, case management, and facilitated enrollment into public health insurance programs, training, and strategic support for members and organizing campaigns. Our attorneys and advocates specialize in labor and employment law, public benefits, disability benefits, housing law, healthcare and health insurance access, immigration, public education, domestic violence, and LGBTQ (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender and Queer) civil rights issues.
 
Make the Road New York’s Adult Literacy Team is seeking a Part Time math instructor for our Bridge to Health Careers class: in our Bushwick office on Fridays from 8:45am-1:30pm -- (4.5 teaching hours + 4.5 hours of prep time for a total of 9 hours per week) 

Responsibilities / Competencies:
  1. Curricular design work- Hand in course outlines, unit and lesson plans and related materials in the requested format by the deadlines that are set and agreed to. Maintain all of that in the Google drive, and integrate certain thematic content and materials into lessons as required by funders or decided by the team.  
  2. Student Assessment- combine TABE initial assessments with original math assessments at the beginning of the cycle and continue to assess students in an intentional and structured way throughout the cycle.
  3. Instruction- Deliver content material in ways that take into account students’ levels and learning styles, the need to pace and scaffold information, and the need to balance the and cover a variety of math skills in each 16 week cycle.
  4. Communication with and support of students - Call absent students and document calls; make referrals to MRNY’s case manager as needed
  5. Related admin/grant related tasks- in addition to tracking attendance, help with post testing, grading of samples of students’ work, and writing monthly progress notes for a portion of students in the class, as funders require.
  6. Participate in meetings and trainings- attend external professional development according to funders’ requirements, as well as 1 on 1 support meetings, team and staff meetings
  7. Must be creative, organized, and committed to thematic instruction and learner-centered, participatory education
  8. Good team player able to collaborate with the lead teacher. 
Required:
  • Eligible to work in the US
  • Bachelor’s Degree
  • At least 3 yrs. math teaching experience, preferably teaching adults.
  • For ESOL classes must be able to speak some Spanish with students outside of class if not occasionally within class
  • Strong computer skills
Strongly Preferred:
  • Teaching Certification or Masters in TESOL or math (as relevant to the position)
  • Experience teaching for the TABE Math Test
  • Experience working in community based social justice organizations
  • Interest in collaboration and professional development with team members.
Preferred:
  • Some proficiency in Spanish
  • Best Plus Certified a plus
Class Schedules/length of job: The math class runs 1 day a week- Note: currently it’s Fridays, though it might be possible to move it to another day of the week for the right candidate if Friday is impossible.  Class runs 8:45-1:30.
 
There is a Fall Cohort which starts in mid Sept and a Winter cohort which starts in late Jan/early Feb.   
 
The job will run from late August 2021 to late June 2022 with the possibility to renew for the 2022 / 2023 academic year, depending on the teacher’s performance and funding.  
 
Salary Information: Starting compensation is based on a scale set by a democratically- elected personnel committee and will depend on factors such as experience and education.

Full Time Academic Instructor (HSE/ABE) 
Mosholu Montefiore Community Center

Duties
  • Conduct in person and remote Academic instruction in all subject areas (particularly ELA) to young adult participants 17-24 years of age (both in person and remote) enrolled in a workforce development program located in the Bronx, NY.
  • Creating a classroom environment that is conducive to learning; inclusive of all different learning styles and addresses varied group dynamics. Lesson delivery that is engaging, energetic and promotes student retention. Reinforce program policies and procedures to maintain a healthy and safe learning environment. Ability to develop and implement both synchronous and asynchronous activities for students both in person and remote.
  • Meet student retention goals. Providing opportunities to acknowledge student achievement. Follow up on absent students.
  • Apply technology and various teaching strategies to enhance the learning experience of students.
  • Provide assessments and reports as necessary and provide individual feedback to students to ensure their success. 
  • TABE pre/post testing and TASC assessment testing
  • Participate in regular staff and program planning meetings
  • Disseminate program information as appropriate; provide outreach and training to potential candidates about MMCC services
  • Maintain necessary documentation records for program evaluation and audit purposes
  • Attend mandatory professional development training and meetings for purposes of learning best practices and current trends in adult learning
  • Monitor and report on student progress. Communicate with case managers for support.
  • Provide feedback to supervisor for improving the quality of service delivery. Communicate issues and problem solving. 
  • Other related duties as assigned. Reports to Academics Coordinator and Program Director
  • Qualifications:
  • A minimum of three years of demonstrated experience in high school and/or adult education, Bachelors degree (Masters preferred) in Education or related subject. Teaching license preferred.

Part-Time Adult Education Instructor – HSE Tutor
CAMBA seeks a part-time Instructor supporting adults who are seeking their High School Equivalency diploma through the National External Diploma Program (NEDP). The candidate will: tutor adults in math, reading and writing, research and develop instructional materials, conduct NEDP information sessions, proctor program entrance exams, advise and assess participants as they progress through the NEDP, and evaluate subject areas according to program criteria.
 
This position is part-time, 24 hours weekly to be worked between Monday-Friday, 9am-5pm. Specific schedule is negotiable and will be discussed and agreed upon prior to hire. B.A/B.S. preferred. The Adult Education Program is seeking a dynamic, hardworking educator who has significant experience working with diverse adult, non-traditional high school equivalency populations at a variety of ABE levels, including HSE. Knowledge of the New York State –approved Test Assessing Secondary Completion (TASC), TABE testing and NRS levels. Experience teaching HSE-related disciplines:  math, science, writing, reading and social studies is required. Position available immediately: Classes are held in the evenings from 6pm-9pm, Mondays and Wednesdays.

Candidate must have experience using technology in the classroom, interdisciplinary adult education curricula, and utilizing a variety of assessment methods.

​Minimum Requirements
: Bachelor of Arts/Science degree, plus at least two (2) years adult education and/or non-traditional teaching ABE and/or HSE, along with relevant adult education professional development. Must have excellent interpersonal skills that inspire and relate to student population.

Responsibilities:
  • Meet learning outcomes prescribed by funding source.
  • Teach ABE or High School Equivalency preparation course, all areas: Math, Social Studies, Science, Reading, and Writing.
  • Prepare/follow detailed curriculum and utilize various curriculum resources.
  • Take daily attendance and maintain minimum student attendance as outlined by contracting agency or funder
  • Maintain students’ files with documents pertaining to students’ progress.
