The ABE/GED instructor will lead classes, instruct students in all subjects necessary to pass the GED exam .Instructors will assist in  developing  curriculum and materials, design lessons, maintain a successful learning environment, collaborate with program staff and maintain and submit client  program data.
Qualifications: 
  • Bachelor’s degree required; Master’s degree in Education preferred.  Three (3) year teaching experience in GED preferred. 
  • Knowledge of Pre-GED and GED curriculum and NYS  testing requirements.  Ability to teach all subject areas (reading, math, science, social studies and writing).
  • Excellent communication, interpersonal and organizational skills. 
  • Commitment to incorporating innovative teaching methods. 
  • Ability to assess differences in learning styles and capitalize on student strengths. 
  • Strong computer skills, including experience with Microsoft Office. 
Responsibilities: 
  • Maintain classrooms conducive to learning and facilitate successful participant engagement.
  • Establish clear expectations and encourage student accountability. Implement quality instructional practices, and vary methods of instruction, to encourage participation and retention

Queens Public Library / Long Island City Adult Learning Center 
Position Title:   Part-Time ESOL/ABE/Pre-HSE/HSE Teachers
Hiring Wage:  $38-S40 per/hour 

SUMMARY:
These part-time positions will provide instruction to our ESOL/ABE/Pre-HSE/HSE students at Queens Public Library’s (QPL) Long Island City / Adult Learning Center (LIC/ALC). The teacher will also provide educational guidance to students to ensure the quality of instruction, effective programming, and adequate documentation towards positive educational gain, per government and private foundation contractual requirements. Duties will include assisting in all aspects of lesson planning and teaching the above classes/students utilizing QPL’s Community Learning Program (CLP)-approved curricula and prescribed teaching methodology, including answering student inquiries and providing them instructional support. Also, including assisting LIC/ALC staff and volunteers during registration, pre-and post-testing, and data collection as it relates to class attendance and students’ educational goals & outcomes, as well as helping to track inventory including textbooks, BEST Plus & BEST Literacy test materials. Lastly, duties will include working with Lead Instructors to review and revise curricula and lesson plans prior to each semester, attending internal staff development training/meetings, and external conferences/training, as necessary.  Perform other duties as required.
 
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Applies content knowledge and expertise in teaching to drive participant progress and outcomes.
  • Designs and implements lesson plans that ensure students make measurable skills gains.
  • Administers BEST Plus, Best Literacy, TABE, TASC Readiness, and other applicable testing instruments to assess participants’ measurable skills gains.
  • Refines lessons learned from professional development workshops to develop recommendations for students.
  • Collaborates with the administration to create lesson plans/curricula that allow for flexibility and encourage experimentation/innovation and digital literacy within the overall structure.
  • Facilitates the distribution of information gained through meetings and observations.
  • Leverages best practices in Adult Education principles and instruction to build upon the current curriculum.
  • Recommends appropriate materials and resources to participants, and provides access to computer-assisted instruction.
  • Collaborates in reviewing, editing, and revising curricula as needed.
  • Manages online communications and online support with students.
  • Establishes a clear pedagogy and set of goals/outcomes that guide the entire students.
  • Develops lesson plans sequences for ESOL, ABE, pre-HSE, and HSE resulting in coherent and well-articulated progression across NRS educational levels.
  • Outlines framework to informally assess students during the process of achieving program outcomes and objectives.
  • Incorporates interdisciplinary approaches within the curricula when appropriate.
  • Procures materials, and resources to implement into curricula.
 
The schedule for this position will include Saturdays and evenings as required.
 
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Education required. Evidence of mastery and application of adult education principles required.
  • Experience with integrating technology into classroom instruction and supplemental learning outside of a classroom setting required.
  • Strong facilitation, training, and professional development skills are required.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a fast-paced, demanding, and complex work environment required.
  • Must possess strong interpersonal skills, exceptional attention to detail, and be highly organized. Strong written, verbal, and digital communication skills.
 
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
  • MA in TESOL or related field; also, adult education certification and/or 2-3 years experience teaching adults preferred, as well as TABE and/or BEST Plus/BEST ESOL certification.
  • Working knowledge of TASC/GED, TABE Assessment, Best Plus, and Best Literacy preferred.

Program Overview:
HSE Prep classes are a part of COJO Flatbush’s Adult Literacy Services division whose objective is to assist individuals to become self-sufficient.
The HSE instructor will lead classes, instruct students in all subjects included on the NYS approved HSE test, develop curriculum and materials, design lessons, maintain a successful learning environment, collaborate with program staff and maintain program data.

MRNY hiring an Adult Basic Education (ABE) Math PT instructor for our Bridge to Health Careers Class
 
MRNY’s NYC based Adult Education team is seeking a highly motivated, compassionate and skilled math instructor to teach one 4.5 hr/wk class weekly in our Bushwick, Brooklyn location. (Class will be remote until probably after January 2022 if not later.)

Make the Road New York’s Adult Literacy Team is seeking a Part Time math instructor for our Bridge to Health Careers class: in our Bushwick office on Fridays from 8:45am-1:30pm -- (4.5 teaching hours + 4.5 hours of prep time for a total of 9 hours per week) 

Responsibilities / Competencies:
  1. Curricular design work- Hand in course outlines, unit and lesson plans and related materials in the requested format by the deadlines that are set and agreed to. Maintain all of that in the Google drive, and integrate certain thematic content and materials into lessons as required by funders or decided by the team.  
  2. Student Assessment- combine TABE initial assessments with original math assessments at the beginning of the cycle and continue to assess students in an intentional and structured way throughout the cycle.
  3. Instruction- Deliver content material in ways that take into account students’ levels and learning styles, the need to pace and scaffold information, and the need to balance the and cover a variety of math skills in each 16 week cycle.
  4. Communication with and support of students - Call absent students and document calls; make referrals to MRNY’s case manager as needed
  5. Related admin/grant related tasks- in addition to tracking attendance, help with post testing, grading of samples of students’ work, and writing monthly progress notes for a portion of students in the class, as funders require.
  6. Participate in meetings and trainings- attend external professional development according to funders’ requirements, as well as 1 on 1 support meetings, team and staff meetings
  7. Must be creative, organized, and committed to thematic instruction and learner-centered, participatory education
  8. Good team player able to collaborate with the lead teacher. 
Required:
  • Eligible to work in the US
  • Bachelor’s Degree
  • At least 3 yrs. math teaching experience, preferably teaching adults.
  • For ESOL classes must be able to speak some Spanish with students outside of class if not occasionally within class
  • Strong computer skills
Strongly Preferred:
  • Teaching Certification or Masters in TESOL or math (as relevant to the position)
  • Experience teaching for the TABE Math Test
  • Experience working in community based social justice organizations
  • Interest in collaboration and professional development with team members.
Preferred:
  • Some proficiency in Spanish
  • Best Plus Certified a plus
Class Schedules/length of job: The math class runs 1 day a week- Note: currently it’s Fridays, though it might be possible to move it to another day of the week for the right candidate if Friday is impossible.  Class runs 8:45-1:30.
 
There is a Fall Cohort which starts in mid Sept and a Winter cohort which starts in late Jan/early Feb.   
 
The job will run from late August 2021 to late June 2022 with the possibility to renew for the 2022 / 2023 academic year, depending on the teacher’s performance and funding.  
 
Salary Information: Starting compensation is based on a scale set by a democratically- elected personnel committee and will depend on factors such as experience and education.
