OPPORTUNITY: Lead Facilitator for Young Adult Program
Status:  Independent Contractor
Location: Bronx, New York (in-person) 
Term: 16 weeks (February - May 2023) | 5-10 hours per week 

Literacy Partners is seeking an experienced facilitator for young adults, who brings a trauma-informed, social justice oriented approach to teaching and learning. 

WHO WE ARE: Literacy Partners strengthens families through a two-generation approach to education. With our free classes, community-based workshops, and educational media, low income parents develop the literacy and language skills they need to succeed in today’s world. Our research-based curriculum also incorporates child development and parenting support to help parents boost their children’s early reading, school readiness, and social emotional growth. 

THE OPPORTUNITY: Our Leadership in Education and Parenting (LEAP) program supports young parents who are seeking to obtain their High School Equivalency diplomas (also known as GED, General Education Development test) and transition successfully into college. LEAP employs a two-generation approach that bolsters the responsive parenting strategies of young mothers and supports their achievement of meaningful academic success. 

DELIVERABLES
Session Coordination and Facilitation 
  1. Lead twelve in-person two-hour sessions at Bronx Community College between March to May 2023. 
  2. With the Literacy Partners team, implement retention strategies to keep students engaged and in full attendance and convene integration activities (e.g. playdates, closing celebration) 
  3. Work in partnership with the GED program to further support students. 
  4. Cultivate a community of connection during and in between sessions. 
Session Preparation 
  1. Communicate and coordinate with the Program Manager for logistical and operational needs, as well as matters related to the students. 
  2. Attend virtual weekly team meetings and prepare debriefing reports for each week. 
  3. Participate in orientation the week before the program starts and program debrief sessions one week after the program concludes. 
  4. Design and participate in the integration activities.

The LEAP facilitator will lead twelve weekly 2 hour sessions on topics related to intergenerational trauma, early child development, responsive parenting, and resilience strategies. The ideal candidate understands how sys​temic (and internalized) oppression shapes the experiences of young BIPOC adults, has a deep understanding of trauma-informed approaches to teaching/learning, and has experience cultivating an empowering space that centers the parent-scholars as agents of change in their communities.

Hot Bread Kitchen seeks a full-time ESOL instructor to teach contextualized lessons to adult bi/multilingual learners and help them achieve their personal and career goals. Our ESOL program embraces translanguaging pedagogy and focuses on developing English language skills for the workforce, specifically in the food industry.
This position will report directly to the Bridge Program Manager.
 
Responsibilities:
  • Provide contextualized and differentiated ESOL instruction; the classes include integrated digital skills 
  • Review and make revisions to our contextualized culinary ESOL curriculum to ensure members successfully complete the Culinary Training Program, get a job in the food industry, and pass the Food Protection Certificate course

P/T ESOL Instructor
Adult English Language and Literacy (AELL) is the direct service provider of ESOL and adult literacy instruction for the New York Public Library.  They use professional teachers to offer free instruction to adult patrons in reading, writing, speaking and listening from a 0 to 8th grade level. Through formal classes in language and literacy, as well as elective offerings such as English conversation and citizenship preparation groups, AELL has taken on the charge to expand ESOL programming in the Library through both in-person and online instruction.

Key Responsibilities:
Working with the Associate Director and the Hub Manager, hourly instructors will:
  • Teach ESOL classes that promote English language proficiency for students assessed at NRS levels 1-6
  • Follow the prescribed curriculum in a communicative language  teaching environment during class-time.
  • Instruct adult ESOL students in classes and learning experiences which will lead to the achievement of their educational and personal goals.
  • Assist in the managed enrollment process to recruit and maintain students and student records
  • Maintain daily attendance records
  • Prepare weekly lesson plans for each session based on the curriculum.

Skills Knowledge & Expertise
  • Bachelor’s degree required, with training and/or experience in ESOL
  • Experience teaching adults both in-person and online
  • Strong interpersonal skills. Ability to work well with a variety of people, in a multicultural setting, involving a variety of team situations
  • Experience administering standardized assessments
  • Successfully demonstrated knowledge of technology-assisted learning, instructional software, video, audio and distance learning
  • Successfully demonstrated experience using Microsoft Office, Google Suite, and Zoom

The Adult Education and Literacy (AELP) department provides English for speakers of other languages (ESOL) courses, citizenship preparation classes, computer literacy classes, and GED preparation for youth and adults 18+. AELP programs incorporates full wrap around services including job readiness, job placement, and college preparation. The Lehman Adult Learning Center seeks dynamic ESOL teachers for part-time employment starting
January 2023.
 
Teacher will provide ESOL instruction to adults. Must be creative, organized, and committed to learner-centered, participatory education.
 
Duties include:
  • Create and implement student-centered lessons with a thematic focus;
  • Assess students’ work and provide feedback on an ongoing basis;

English Instructors Needed
CAMBA needs ESOL instructors to teach part-time in person and on site at its Education Center, located at 955 Flatbush Avenue – Brooklyn, N.Y.

There are 4 open positions: two morning (9 am to 12 noon) and two evening (5:30 to 8:30 pm), Monday through Thursday.

The salary for each position is $34 per hour for up to 24 hours biweekly.

Classes for these open positions are scheduled to begin on Monday, January 9th, 2023.

It is required that candidates have at least a BA/BS in education or a related field and at least 2 years of experience as an ESOL instructor; MA/MS preferred. Candidates must be familiar with Internet resources of relevance to English learners and be able to integrate technology and workplace skills into classroom instruction.

Applicants who are BEST Plus Administrators, who have experience in computer-assisted instruction, who are self-starters, and who are highly organized are preferred. In order to be hired, applicants will need to submit contact information for 3 current/former work supervisors whom a CAMBA staff will contact for professional/objective reference purposes.

Teacher Training Position

GENERAL DESCRIPTION
CUNY Start is an intensive pre-matriculation program that helps CUNY associate degree-seeking students with significant remedial needs increase their academic proficiency in English and/or in mathematics prior to enrollment in college credit classes. CUNY Start is recognized for its carefully designed curriculum and pedagogy, ongoing professional development, and mentor-based training model. CUNY Start programs are currently located on eight CUNY campuses: Borough of Manhattan Community College, Bronx Community College, College of Staten Island, Hostos Community College, Kingsborough Community College, LaGuardia Community College, New York City College of Technology, and Queensborough Community College.

CUNY Start’s English program offers semester-based and shorter term course offerings that helps students develop their English skills, prepare for college-level English classes, and meet CUNY proficiency milestones.

JOB DESCRIPTION
The CUNY Start Cooperating English Teacher position (“Cooperating English Teacher”) is a paid training opportunity to learn to use a successful, student-centered approach and curriculum with CUNY students who have significant remedial English needs. Under the supervision of the Program Director, the Cooperating English Teacher is responsible for learning and/or supporting the work of an experienced CUNY Start Instructor in implementing the CUNY Start English curriculum.

CUNY Start may deliver instruction in multiple formats: in-person, online or as hybrid classes that are both online and in-person. Online instruction may be a combination of synchronous and asynchronous teaching that is determined at the discretion of program management. Online work may entail instruction on such platforms as Blackboard, Zoom, and other remote instructional tools that are available and approved by the University and which support the goals and practices of the program. During periods of remote teaching, CUNY Start Teachers remain responsible for maintaining high-levels of student engagement and enacting the CUNY Start curriculum with fidelity to the program model.

Responsibilities:
  • Key duties include, but will not be limited to the following:
  • Work under the guidance and leadership of the Lead Teacher;
  • Study lesson plans thoroughly in advance of all classes;
  • Observe classes and assist the Lead Teacher in and outside of the classroom;
  • Assist students as they plan, revise, and edit essays, and respond to writing with suggestions for revision;
  • Facilitate student group work and guide group interactions;
  • Lead classroom activities of increasing length over the course of the training semester;
  • Attend and participate in regular professional development meetings;
  • Assist in student conferences, orientation, testing, and recruitment;
  • Attend and participate in team meetings with advisors and teachers;
  • Other related duties as assigned.
Requirements
The preferred candidate will possess the educational and professional qualifications appropriate to the teaching assignment as indicated below:
  • Bachelor's degree required; Master's degree preferred;

Employment
$40.45 per hour as a Continuing Education Teacher (CET). Please note that the CET rate is subject to future collective bargaining increases;
Approximately 25 hours per week, depending on holidays and campus calendar; Monday-Friday in daytime programs; Monday-Thursday in afternoon/evening programs.

Appointment period: approximately six (6) months from appointment date; a maximum of 530 hours for a full six-month appointment.

Positions available at multiple campuses. Campuses with priority hiring needs are currently the College of Staten Island and Kingsborough Community College.
Cooperating English Teachers who successfully complete at least one semester of service in the CUNY Start program are eligible to apply for appointments as a Core or Support Teacher in CUNY Start, to the extent vacancies are available. Summer teaching may be required.
