Case Manager - Career Counselor, Adult Literacy
JEWISH COMMUNITY COUNCIL OF GREATER CONEY ISLAND, Inc
The Case Manager - Career Counselor will be responsible for addressing the students’ barriers affecting their ability to benefit from ESOL classes, working through employment barriers, assisting students with achieving and retaining employment.
This position entails working closely with Students, Instructors, Lead Teacher, Program Coordinators/Data Managers, and Program Director to ensure the success of the program
 
This position includes (but is not limited to) the following responsibilities:
  • Assist in outreach to identify appropriate program sites and program participants who are eligible, motivated and employment bound.
  • Assist with intake, including completing the necessary paperwork with each student.
  • Interview students at time of initial assessment to determine any barriers that students face from fully benefitting from the program, and assist them in overcoming those barriers by facilitating internal and external referrals.  (Barriers may include, child care, housing, transportation, mental illness etc.)
  • For the duration of the ESL training, schedule meetings with each student on a bi-monthly basis
  • Monitor students’ development throughout their training and the pre and post-employment period, utilizing the necessary documents required by the funding source / Program Director.
  • Offer career counseling to help students make appropriate career choices. Share the latest job market information and help them identify the types of jobs that are suitable based on their work experience, skills, and English levels. For those employed, encourage job retention and advancement.
  • Assist students with resume preparation.
  • Actively research and create awareness for benefits and resources available to the NY immigrant population (ex: healthcare, vocational training, HSE opportunities, etc.).
  • Conduct individual and group employment-related workshops such as resume preparation, interviewing skills, confidence building, cultural differences in the American workplace, employer-employee relationships, and job retention skills, etc. Conduct orientation and student enrollment in job portals per funder requirements.
  • Establish and maintain employer relationships, develop job bank, and place students in jobs based on program requirements.
  • Maintain accurate case management/employment records, including following students’ employment as per program requirements.
  • Participate in meetings and workshops held at the funding sources when deemed necessary or when helpful to the program, and participate in the required staff development workshops.
 
Qualifications: Bachelors Degree; culturally sensitive professional individual with good word processing skills; excellent written, communicative and interpersonal skills; accurate data-entry and typing skills; prior career counseling and workforce development experience preferred;  Bi-lingual English-Spanish or Mandarin strongly preferred; good references.
Supervision: The Case Manager – Career Counselor will be supervised by the Program Director of Adult Literacy.
Work Schedule: 35 hours per week. Must be available to work day time and evening hours.
Work Environment: Work will be performed mainly at JCCGCI offices, and includes travel to ESL sites throughout the five boroughs (driving capability preferred). 
Language Skills: Ability to read and speak English; Mathematical Skills. Bi-lingual English-Spanish or Mandarin preferred.
Computer Skills: Proficiency in Microsoft Word and Excel, and data entry; basic knowledge of computer networking processes
Physical Demands:  Ability to lift 15 pounds
Reasoning Ability: Ability to make determinations of best procedures and practices to attain goals of the position.
Working Conditions:  Occasionally called upon to work over schedule or odd schedules (e.g. when outreach is best accomplished after-hours or on weekends).

Lead Teacher – Curriculum Developer, Adult Literacy
JEWISH COMMUNITY COUNCIL OF GREATER CONEY ISLAND, Inc

The Lead Teacher – Curriculum Developer will be responsible for supervising the Adult Literacy teaching staff, develop curriculum and materials that result in the achievement of defined learning objectives and positive learning experience, manage staff development activities, and teach several classes.
This position entails working closely with Students, Instructors, Case Manager/Career Counselor, Program Coordinators/Data Managers, and Program Director to ensure the success of the program
 
This position includes (but is not limited to) the following responsibilities:
  • Develop (Workforce based) ESOL curriculum, presentations, practical applications and technology, in accordance with funders’ curricula requirements.
  • Supervise and guide instructors, and assist in their recruitment process.
  • Supervise and evaluate teachers’ instruction and testing and serve as a resource to enhance their teaching style.
  • Serve as Instructor, per the Job Description of Adult Literacy Teaching Staff.
  • Plan and conduct staff training and development sessions for Teaching Staff
  • Ensure that all instructional staff (including Lead Teacher - Curriculum Developer) meet the staff development requirements.
  • Monitor and assess results of ESOL education throughout students’ training and the pre and post-test period, to ensure that achievements in learning objectives are appropriately attained.
  • Assure that Contract compliance and recordkeeping is maintained according to funding source and JCCGCI internal standards

ESOL Instructor, Medical Assistant Training Program P/T

Part Time ESOL Teacher for Medical Assistant Training Program
New York City College, CUNY

The Adult Learning Center is seeking an experienced and dynamic ESOL instructor to teach a contextualized (health sector) upper level class. The class meets during the daytime twice a week at the Brooklyn Educational Opportunity Center near City Tech. ESOL instruction will support students co-enrolled in a Medical Assistant training program with the goal of pursuing a career in health care. The instructor attends meetings, creates lesson plans and develops curricula.
  • Design and develop a contextualized ESOL curriculum for Medical Assistant trainees based on input from Medical Assistant professors, current research, and best practices
  • Deliver engaging, practical, contextualized classes that include a variety of experiential instructional techniques to strengthen the skills necessary for successful completion of the Medical Assistant program
  • Create a student-centered learning environment to maximize student participation and promote self-sufficiency
  • Track student progress to ensure that participants progress satisfactorily - adjust activities and assignments as needed
  • Work with the Educational Case Manager to assist students in setting and managing goals
  • Collaborate with City Tech and BEOC personnel to meet program goals and objectives
 
Qualifications:
  • BA in education or related field; MA preferred
  • Experience developing and teaching contextualized ESOL to adults. Must be well-versed in student-centered learning and approaches
  • Knowledge or experience related to the health field desirable
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to work as part of a team required
  • Must have solid writing ability and be well organized
  • Comfortable with technology and online resources in a classroom setting
 
Salary range: $40 - $50 P/H, depending on experience and qualifications

Title: IELCE  (Integrated English Literacy and Civics Education) Instructor

Fifth Avenue Committee (FAC), is a nationally recognized South Brooklyn based, non-profit community development corporation formed in 1978 whose mission is to advance economic and social justice by building vibrant, diverse communities where residents have genuine opportunities to achieve their goals as well as shape the community’s future.  FAC’s Adult Education and Family Literacy unit serves over 700 students annually at the Adult Education Unit at 294 Smith Street and several locations in Sunset Park and Red Hook.
 
Responsibilities:
The Instructor will be part of a passionate team of instructors and administrators dedicated to helping foreign born residents of Brooklyn train for and find employment as bus drivers. In partnership with Brooklyn Workforce Innovation’s Red Hook on the Road, the instructor will help participants navigate the process of getting a CDL permit, gain the language skills necessary to pass the oral part of the licensing exam and prepare to enter RHOR technical driving program.
 
Qualifications
B.A./B.S. degree is required, and at least two year recent, relevant teaching experience with immigrant populations. Must be a certified Best Plus Test Administrator. Must have experience working with workforce development programs. Bi-lingual in Spanish or Chinese is a plus.

The Center for Family Life is looking for a Part time English as a Second Language Instructor to teach a morning ESOL class starting in September 2018.
Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
  • Customize instructional materials by building on own training and experience to create high quality lesson plans to instruct adults in English as a Second Language in multi- level classes
  • Preparing class materials in advance of class sessions
  • Register students at the start of each cycle completing all required paperwork
  • Assess each student's level of ability utilizing the Best Plus 2 test (pre and post testing)
  • Communicate with program director regarding apparent barriers to student success (e.g., child daycare needs, possible health/housing issues, etc.)
  • Maintain daily student attendance records. Follow up with students who might be lacking in attendance.
  • Prepare reports on students’ attendance and progress, as required
  • Maintain and update students' learning portfolios
  • Coordinate with program director regarding next steps in student's progress toward achieving their goals
  • Provide all required information for weekly/monthly/quarterly/annual reports
  • Participate in professional development meetings/ activities on and off sites
Position Requirements:
  • Minimum of Bachelor's degree
  • BEST Plus certification highly preferred
  • At least two years of experience serving adult learners, teaching ESL / ESOL
  • Experience working with immigrant communities
  • Ability to provide services in a manner sensitive to the backgrounds and cultures of program participants
  • Bilingual Spanish or Chinese preferred
  • Availability for individual tutoring and other administrative tasks
This is a part time position. Class will meet M, W, F from 9am to 12 noon.  Requires extra time availability for individual tutoring and other extra curricula activities.
Salary:  $25 -$27 per hour DOE

Part time ESOL Project Coordinator position
The Center for Family Life is seeking a part time Assistant Program Coordinator to provide support and coordination for the ESOL program, and to ensure that students are effectively recruited, enrolled, retained and making satisfactory progress toward desired program outcomes. The ESL Coordinator reports to the Program Director.
 
Duties include but are not limited to:
  • Assisting in development of outreach materials. Implement outreach activities
  • Conducting intake and completing enrollment paperwork  for each student,
  • Maintain and organize students records
  • Manage pre and post testing schedules
  • Monitor attendance, review sign-in sheets for accuracy noting reasons for absences. Enter attendance in on line system in a timely manner.
  • Ideally Coordinator will conduct pre and post testing utilizing the Best Plus 2.0 test
  • Coordinator will meet with students to assess needs and connect them to services within Center for Family Life or other providers as needed, and will follow up and advocate on students behalf when necessary.
  • Providing resource support for instructors and staff as necessary
  • Assisting in orientation and graduation ceremony duties
  • Other duties might be assigned according to program needs.
 
Desired Qualifications:
BA degree preferred. Strong verbal and written communication skills; strong time management skills, including demonstrated capacity to complete assignments under strict deadlines; High level of organization, attention to detail, and follow-through; dependable, punctual, and able to maintain a high level of confidentiality.
Bilingual English/Spanish strongly preferred. At least two years of similar experience and/or social service experience; proficiency with Microsoft Word and Excel (includes facility with spreadsheets and tables). Ability to work independently and as part of a team, and demonstrated willingness to take initiative and assume other responsibilities as needed.
 
This is a part time position, 20 hrs. per week.
Salary: $20 to $22 per hour DOE

Manager, Adult Literacy Classes F/T

Make the Road New York (MRNY) (www.maketheroadny.org) is a non-profit organization that builds the power of immigrant and working class communities to achieve dignity and justice through organizing, policy innovation, transformative education, and survival services.  
 
Make the Road New York’s Adult Literacy Department seeks a highly motivated, organized, dedicated  and experienced manager to oversee all of the administrative work associated with our ESOL and ABE classes in MRNY’s Brooklyn location, as well as to provide support to MRNY’s Staten Island-based adult literacy staff member(s).  The Adult Literacy Manager of Administrative work will support a dynamic Adult literacy program offering English, Citizenship preparation and health career job training classes to immigrant New Yorkers. The position will be based out of MRNY’s office in Bushwick, Brooklyn.
 
Candidates must be bilingual in English and Spanish, and possess very strong computer and administrative skills.  We need a trustworthy individual, with the ability to work occasional evening and weekend hours on a cyclical basis.  In addition, candidates must be willing to travel occasionally to our Staten Island, and our Queens centers, as needed.  Applicants must have at least 2 years previous experience working in an office setting.  The ideal candidate must be efficient, communicative, and a team player who is able to multi-task and work well under pressure.  They should also be able to meet deadlines as needed, be a fast learner, take initiative and work independently with high quality standards.  In addition applicants must be able to type at least 35 wpm, and demonstrate strong proficiency with Google drive and Microsoft Office suite programs, as well as experience working with data entry in databases. 
 
Manager’s responsibilities include but are not limited to:
  • Training and management of administrative assistants and volunteers supporting MRNY’s Adult Literacy team’s admin work
  • Scheduling intake appointments for students and re-enrolling students in additional cycles
  • Pre and post testing of students using a variety of testing programs
  • Scheduling and managing outreach as well as enrollment of students in classes
  • Managing class attendance – entering information in MRNY’s database and tracking docs, calling absent students
  • Updating student records in MRNY’s database as needed
  • Reviewing students’ records
  • Communicating via phone, email, etc. with team members and across the organization as needed to keep work moving smoothly
  • As needed: photocopying, faxing, filing, typing, updating waiting lists, and assisting staff with any other job requests.
  • Attending trainings and meetings, including regular support meetings with supervisees and supervisor and mtgs with other admin team members
 
Compensation: Starting compensation is based on a scale set by a democratically-elected personnel committee and will depend on factors such as experience and education.  MRNY offers a generous benefit package including health insurance and 401K.
