​Adult Education and Literacy (AELP) Coordinator F/T

AELP Coordinator Brooklyn, NY
The AELP provides classes in English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL), Adult Basic Education (ABE) and High School Equivalency (HSE) preparation for adults ages 19 and above.  The AELP incorporates job readiness, college preparation and job placement into its curriculum.  The goal of the program is to help adults improve their English language proficiency, enhance literacy skills, gain citizenship, obtain HSEs, and obtain or improve employment.

Duties will include managing the AELP program across several sites in Brooklyn; helping to implement standardized ESOL, ABE, CIVICS and TASC curricula for the use of all instructors; ensuring that instructors deliver contextualized, student-driven curriculum that integrates work readiness skills, technology, family, health, and financial  literacy; overseeing recruitment, registration, authentic assessment and orientation for new students; assisting with reporting to government and private funders; tracking and reporting student data and achievement results; supervising some adult literacy staff at all program locations.
 
Qualifications:  Minimum of Bachelor’s Degree; preferably Master’s in Education, Administration or related field and minimum of two years of experience in Adult Education; must possess excellent oral and written communication skills; proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite, particularly Word and Excel; Salesforce, Capricorn and/or other database experience required; BEST Plus certification along with knowledge of TABE and NRS reporting standards preferred; community outreach and partnership experience a plus; must be able to work flexible hours to include evenings. Proficiency in Spanish extremely helpful.  Must be willing to travel between all program sites.

Program Overview: Our HSE Prep classes are a part of Henry Street Settlement’s Education and Employment Services, a $10M division providing a continuum of services from early childhood education through adult workforce programs designed to assist individuals in obtaining the skills necessary for lifetime self-sufficiency. HSE Prep classes will offer low-level job seekers opportunities to work towards earning their High School Equivalency. We currently offer three different classes ranging from 4th grade to 12.9th grade. The Program Coordinator will both oversee the program as well as teach one class at the ABE level.  
Qualifications:
  • Bachelor’s degree required; Master’s degree in Education (MEd) preferred
  • Two (2) years teaching and supervisory experience required
  • Ability to engage a diverse population including disconnected youth, adult learners
  • Knowledge of ABE, Pre-HSE and HSE curriculum and HSE testing requirements 
  • Strong computer skills, including experience with Microsoft Office, Google Suite, and web-hosted databases. 
  • Commitment to incorporating innovative teaching methods
  • Excellent organizational, communication, interpersonal skills (including a great sense of humor)
  • Ability to assess differences in learning styles and capitalize on student strengths
Responsibilities:
  • Oversee the implementation of Henry Street’s HSE program including outreach and recruitment, TABE testing, and instruction of an ABE level class
  • Supervise one Pre-HSE/HSE level instructor

CUNY Start Foster Care Initiative Program Coordinator
 
CUNY Start is an intensive program for incoming associate-degree seeking college students who need to increase their academic proficiency in reading, writing and mathematics prior to enrollment in college credit classes.  The CUNY Office of Academic Affairs, the University’s community colleges, Medgar Evers College, and the College of Staten Island work collaboratively to provide students with an innovative approach to developmental education. CUNY Start offers daytime and afternoon/evening programs, relies on data and research to guide program practice and is recognized for its carefully designed curriculum and pedagogy, ongoing professional development and mentor-based training model. 
 
CUNY Start has received a four-year grant from the Conrad N. Hilton Foundation to serve transition aged youth from foster care who wish to pursue associate degrees at CUNY, but who have significant remedial needs in reading, writing, and/or math based on their CUNY Assessment Test scores. The grant will support the development of strategic partnerships with foster care agencies and the New York City Administration for Children’s Services (ACS) to create a graduation college success pipeline for 325 college-bound foster care youth into CUNY Start and the University’s acclaimed Accelerated Study in Associate Programs (ASAP).  In CUNY Start and ASAP, Foster Care students will receive MetroCards, on-campus internships and other supports to ensure timely graduation from college.  Along with creating a college success pipeline for youth from foster care, the lessons learned from the project’s partnerships will be incorporated into CUNY Start’s advisement curriculum and training protocol.  The grant also includes a research and evaluation agenda that will be led by CUNY’s Office of Research, Evaluation, and Program Supports (REPS).  REPS will work with key stakeholders to establish important research projects, lead focus groups, and establish benchmarks and goals for youth from foster care to succeed and graduate from CUNY.

Union Settlement Association is an on-the-ground resource for East Harlem residents of all ages. We bring education, wellness and community-building programs to our neighborhood, empowering New Yorkers with opportunities to better their lives.
 
Union Settlement is seeking an Intergenerational Tutoring Program Coordinator will oversee a joint intergenerational tutoring program being conducted in conjunction with OASIS, a national education organization that operates tutoring programs in cities throughout the United States. Working with elementary schools in East Harlem, the Program Coordinator helps to pair older adults with young children with underdeveloped reading and language skills. The adults will serve as tutors and mentors for the students, working with them one-on-one each week. The Program Coordinator is also responsible for all aspects of this program, including recruitment, placement, scheduling, reporting and oversight, and will serve as the liaison with the partnering New York City schools, and with OASIS and the volunteer tutors.
 
This is a part-time (25 hours/week) position and candidates should possess a Bachelor’s Degree in a related field (Master’s Degree in related field a plus); significant experience in education, community outreach, and/or program coordination; the ability to undertake and complete multiple tasks at the same time; excellent oral and written communication skills, including the ability to conduct outreach and make oral presentations; and excellent organizational and management skills.

  • Conduct training sessions for the tutors.
  • Ensure all tutors are properly screened and are eligible to provide services in the New York City schools.
  • Collaborate with school principals and teachers to identify student participants, and to secure permission from parents and guardians for the tutoring sessions.
  • Establish a schedule of times and locations for the tutoring sessions.

The ideal candidate will have the following qualifications:
  • Bachelor’s Degree in related field preferred; Master’s Degree in related field a plus.  
  • Significant experience in education, community outreach, and/or program coordination.
  • Ability to undertake and complete multiple tasks at the same time.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills, including the ability to conduct outreach and make oral presentations.
  • Excellent organizational and management skills.
  • Excellent interpersonal and dispute resolution skills.

Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Recruit and register all participants.
  • Conduct community outreach.
  • Conduct orientation for all participants. 
  • Provide referrals and follow-up as necessary.
  • Closely monitor student retention; develop and implement alternative ways of keeping participants engaged in all program activities.
  • Ensure participants receive quarterly assessment and document progress.
  • Maintain all attendance sheets, registration forms and participant’s program files.
  • Maintain a database that includes all necessary information on participants.
  • Attend DYCD meetings and trainings/workshops according to program mandates.
  • Ensure all milestones and outcomes are met.
  • Work schedule includes alternate Saturdays.

Qualifications: Must possess a High School Diploma, Bachelor degree preferred; 2 years experience working with Adult Programs required; bilingual
