ESOL Instructor P/T

Masa is seeking a part time ESOL Teacher (approximately 10 hrs/week) to teach 1 beginner-level ESL class running February through the end of May 2024 on Mondays-Wednesdays from 9 am - 11 am. Classes are in-person at Masa's office in the South Bronx and instructors will be paid for prep and administrative time, in addition to class hours. The course seeks to improve participants' English language skills and support them in building confidence in speaking English so that they feel better able to navigate the education systems, government offices, employer interactions, and other settings that can affect the immigrant experience.

The PT ESOL Teacher will work closely with the Adult Education Program Coordinator to ensure the course is interactive, engaging, and aligned to the interests of participating students.

Key responsibilities:

Planning, leading, and documenting weekly interactive and engaging lessons
Monitoring student progress and attendance
Reflecting on course successes and areas for growth and documenting these learnings

Requirements:

Availability Mondays-Wednesdays from 9-11 am from Feb 26th-May 29, 2024 (not including DOE holidays).
Experience developing ESL curriculum and/or modifying existing curriculum to meet student needs
Minimum of 2 years of experience teaching English to adults; TESOL or TOEFL certification strongly preferred
Experience working with immigrant parents a big plus
Highly reliable, organized and able to work independently with minimal supervision
Spanish language proficiency a plus but not required

Compensation:

Hub Manager- Bronx Library Center (Full Time)

Overview
The Adult English Language and Literacy department is the direct service provider of ESOL and adult literacy instruction for the New York Public Library. They use professional teachers to offer free instruction to adult patrons in reading, writing, speaking and listening from a 0 to 8th grade level. Through formal classes in language and literacy, as well as elective offerings in digital literacy, numeracy, and career development, such as English conversation and citizenship preparation groups, and informal conversation programming, AELL is charged with the goal of expanding ESOL and adult literacy instruction in the Library. https://www.nypl.org/events/classes/english

Key Responsibilities
Reporting to the Associate Director, the Hub Manager:

Provides leadership at a hub, supervision, and professional development needed to ensure existing and new staff have the skills to deliver instruction according to the prescribed curricula.
Is responsible for the data and reporting necessary to assure program goals are carried out.
Implements new program initiatives, with a special focus on staff development appropriate for improving English language and literacy proficiency and basic numeracy instruction
Maintains connections with the Bronx Library Center site staff and leadership
Contributes to the development of a curriculum scope and sequence, and a training and support plan necessary to insure its implementation
Schedules classes, teacher schedules, and informal session times
Works directly with NYPL staff and students, promoting and modeling effective instructional strategies, methods, and materials use, in a collaborative learning environment

Required Education & Experience

Master's Degree in TESOL, Adult Literacy, Linguistics, English, or other Education related focus
5 years experience leading staff development related to teaching and learning strategies that integrate computer-assisted instruction and multimedia into the curriculum

Required Skills

Demonstrated knowledge of research-based English Language and literacy instruction for adults in the early stages of language acquisition and literacy development in both in-person and online formats.
Demonstrated experience providing team leadership and supervision
Demonstrated knowledge of federal standards for student achievement (NRS) and the standardized testing (Best Plus and TABE) necessary to document student gains
Strong interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills
Experience in teaching basic math and knowledge of systematic intensive alphabetics instruction preferred
Demonstrated experience utilizing databases to track student information and progress

Preferred Qualifications
Multilingual candidates preferred (Spanish, Chinese, Arabic, etc)

Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) for English Language Learners Program Overview:
As an integrated language education and workforce training program, students participate in concurrent English instruction and workforce certification to begin or advance their healthcare careers. The ESOL Instructor provides quality, contextualized English instruction and academic support to intermediate/advanced learners while they prepare with the RN Instructor for the New York State nurse aide licensing exam.

General Description of Duties:

Create and implement student-centered lessons contextualized for work in a healthcare setting, which might focus on the vocabulary, pronunciation, and authentic conversation skills necessary for on-the-job success.
Coordinate curriculum and weekly lesson plans with the RN Instructor
Provide language support in the CNA classroom and adapt ESOL lessons based on the language and academic needs that arise in real time.
Promote academic skills, such as interpreting textbook reading and taking a multiple-choice exam.
Maintain attendance records.
Work collaboratively with the ALC team: attend staff meetings, participate in program-wide events, share ideas and communicate with teachers and educational advisors.
Attend Professional Development workshops as required.
Administer BEST Plus test and participate in registration and orientation.
Perform the duties of other positions when necessary.

Qualifications:

Qualified candidates must have prior experience teaching in Adult ESOL classrooms, both in person and online, such as on Zoom.
Bachelor's degree required; ESOL teaching certification preferred.
Experience preparing students for career pathways preferred.
Must be creative, organized, and committed to learner-centered, participatory education.

Pay : $40.00 / hour
